BioWare has stated that Dragon Age: Origins & Awakening will receive patch(es?) and DLC before Dragon Age II is released. I can't find the article right now, but that's the gist of what was said.

Damn, they are idiots. 
At first, like a totally cool mod like Warden's Keep. It could be! But instead, they're going to make it a standalone, so we can't access it from Origins or Awakening or take party members with us. Great thinking.

Well I've already got all the DLCs I'm interested in. I guess it's nice for players who haven't bought the original game yet, though.

Yeah, that's what the purpose probably is - get larger player base for the DA franchise before Dragon Age II is released.
