It sounds like a buggered spell effect to me, but it's really hard to say. You might want to figure out what the .itm file name is with a game editor (ShadowKeeper, NI, DLTCEP) and then do a weidu --change-log on it to see if a mod's done it. There should be instructions for that in the pinned FAQ in this forum, or if you can't figure it out, upload an exported character or saved game so someone else might look at it.

I am on mac, running in Wine and other derivatives and have it all biffed, making it a bit troublesome to extract the .ITM . Going to post the save instead. Last member of the party has the items. I have also noticed THAC0 changing values and random dexterity drops, though I've no idea if they are related.

Well I hope someone has a chance to check this out and maybe do some weidu --change-logs on the axes... haven't had time myself, been kind of busy. You don't need to "extract" the item (though if you did, that wouldn't be an issue), you just need to figure out what the filename it is so you can see what other mods affected it as described in the megamod FAQ here.

Lol at savegame name

Anyway, the buggy axes are DVENAXE.ITM from SpellRev, it'd be great if you do a changelog (see point #6) of that file ;)

Otherwise, give the SR guys a ring :P

Cheers,
Lol

I've done a new install (via a 32-bit WinXP VMWare cause of XM2WAV 16-bit incompatibility with my host 64-bit windows install), still get the cursed battle axes...

here is the output of the WeiDU change thingie -

[WeiDU.exe] WeiDU version 21200
[WeiDU.exe] Using scripting style "BG2"
override/dvenaxe.itm
override/DVENAXE.ITM RevisedBattles/backup/0/DVENAXE.ITM
override/DVENAXE.ITM scsII/backup/1000/DVENAXE.ITM
override/DVENAXE.ITM item_rev/backup/14/DVENAXE.ITM
override/DVENAXE.ITM item_rev/backup/18/DVENAXE.ITM

Mods affecting DVENAXE.ITM:

00001: ~SETUP-REVISEDBATTLES.TP2~ 0 0 // Improved Battles - "erebusant's Patching Version" v6

Cursed? Do they also get the "cursed" flag?!

Mods affecting DVENAXE.ITM:
00000: /* from game biffs */ ~SPELL_REV/SETUP-SPELL_REV.TP2~ 0 0 // Spell Revisions
00001: ~SETUP-REVISEDBATTLES.TP2~ 0 0 // Improved Battles - "erebusant's Patching Version" v6

00004: ~ITEM_REV/ITEM_REV.TP2~ 0 18 // Backstabbing Penalties Only

Well, SCS simply patches the axe to make the 'enchantment level' detectable and never caused any issue before. I'm also pretty sure IR's patching codes (yes Miloch, we do have them too!) can't cause something like that, but I'll try to look into it.

I really don't know what Improved Battles do to this item though...actually I really can't imagine why it would patch it at all.

Sorry, cursed as in cursed by me, not the game :)

Also, should have mentioned that my game crashes if I continue to play when the axes appear, not immediately but it seems inevitably, even if I drop the items. At first I thought playing via Wine on OS X might have had something to do with it, but now it happens in Windows as well.

Cursed? Do they also get the "cursed" flag?!

I just tried it in a SR+IR+SCS installation and I have no problems at all...I have no time right now to look at it in-depth sorry but unless it's Revised Battles causing it I really don't know what it can be.

Ok, I in the process of un/re-installing without Improved Battles - "erebusant's Patching Version" v6 component, will see what happens.

Revised battles has this piece of code at the end of its .tp2:

COPY_EXISTING_REGEXP GLOB ~^.+\.itm$~ ~override~

It reindexes spells and items that are botched. Though it's a bit overkill to run it on all spells and items (Resource Fixer only applies it to those that have known issues) it's Nythrun's code, so the chances of it causing a problem, particularly this one, are pretty much nil. Which means if SCS isn't the culprit either, I guess that kinda narrows it down, dunnit?

SPWI430.spl creates this item, for what that's worth. Which I believe is a spell added exclusively by SR.

So that's why we see Revised battles in almost every changelog :) And I thought it botched up stuff (since it's essentially just a tactics mod ... and it patched items :P)

And looks like we'll have another patch vs. overwriting thread in the making soon ^_^ Stay tuned folks ...

lol, ok then, I was kind of hoping of getting past these axes for a while now, which mods should I consider removing in order to make it happen?

TIA

Btw, why are these axes popping up?? Is it really the .itm's fault?? Maybe something is repeatedly casting that spell?? Or some script?? Maybe some item has that spell as a passive effect

It narrows it down to Spell Revisions and Item Revisions. So you can remove those mods and see if it still happens, preferably with a new game because who knows if there would still be lingering effects embedded in a modded saved game. Conversely, you can test it with *only* those two mods installed and if it still happens, then that definitely narrows it down.

@Lollorian: I did a "where-used" search in NI on that spell and found nothing, but that doesn't really prove anything. Since it has a standard wizard prefix (SPWI), it's possible a mage could acquire it somehow, and NI doesn't always pick up everything.

The changelog on the item shows that it's probably fine. The spell is probably fine as well. It's possible that some mod introduces a spwi430.spl before SR, and has scripts that try to cast it (or an effect on an item or other spell does the same), but SR's spell gets cast instead.

To verify whether this is the case (and stop it from doing so if it is), I recommend grabbing Near Infinity and opening spell.ids in your game. Click "Find... -> in this file" and search for 2430. If you get a result, that means some mod has associated spwi430.spl with a scripting identifier (probably something like WIZARD_SPELL_NAME). From the menu bar, you can then do "Search -> Text Search -> BCS" and search for whatever the identifier was. The results will contain all scripts that cast this spell. I'd recommend making a backup of any you find and then simply deleting all the lines in the files that try to cast the spell, then compiling the files.

If you didn't find an identifier for 2430, then instead navigate to dvenaxe.itm and on the Edit tab, click "Find... -> references to this file". (This process could take a while.) Aside from stuff in your save game, your only result should be spwi430.spl. Repeat the process on spwi430.spl. (This time, the search should be quicker.) This one should actually return 0 results, because the spell should be called from a .2da. If you get different results for either of these searches, let us know.

Try searching for the "where-used" of the Battle Axe +3 in item files too. It could be an item effect to create an item on hit or when returned. I had this same problem with thrown axe +2 creating dupes in the inventory. I suspect an item, not a spell and I don't know what mod did it to my file, I moved on a long time ago.

I did a where-used on the item and got only the spell. But Desecration of Souls or whatever it's called now (Dark Ritual?) uses the same spell for Daeragh's Aura Cleansing. So it's no wonder it's spamming you with a bunch of battle axes if you've got that mod and SR installed. This is why you should always check on a BWP install for an open slot before assigning a new spell with a standard prefix (such as SPWI).

Edit: And is it just me or does anyone else see this thread as a wall of nasty code if they're not logged on?
