Then maybe you should revise that rule, 'cause it's not accurate as quoted. Something perhaps like:

Spellhold Studios strongly urges our visitors not to post anything about "cracks" - or anything else the Mad Dictators Administrators deem inappropriate.

BTW compatibility with no-CD is interesting, because I always use one myself and intend to keep it that way. But then again, at worst it means sacrificing a bit of HD space for iso.

I'm pretty sure that removing the CD check from a game breaks the DMCA (unless used to run the game on a device without a CD reader, or other edge case), while modding only breaks the EULA, not the law (and the EULA is unenforceable until tested by a court).

Perhaps, but since there's no missile-armed aircraft enforcing that particular law, I'm quite content with ignoring it's pointlessness. Besides preserving CD and CD-ROM from wearing off means preserving Earth's resources which otherwise would have been spent on producing a replacement.

Possibly you could argue that benefits your "security" under the video game exclusion:

Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:
- The information derived from the security testing is used primarily to promote the security of the owner or operator of a computer, computer system, or computer network; and
- The information derived from the security testing is used or maintained in a manner that does not facilitate copyright infringement or a violation of applicable law.

I didn't want to start a flame about cracks or something like that. All I'm saying that I have bought a game (legally and so on) and the .exe provided with the distribution in my country lets me play without the CD (so it just had the required cd flag turned off or something, I'm not a modder myself so I don't really know). And all I wanted was to ask if Tobex will ever be compatible with that exe too (cause it's a normal, unmodified one). And before that happened I had to overcome the problem in another manner which I have found. I'm not saying that we should all brake the law...
Just to end this. If you woould like to add support to the original exe from my countries distribution I can mail it to you if it is needed for the process.

I'm pretty sure the copy you bought isn't authorized by Bioware (hence illegal) - all disk copies of BG2 have the CD check.

Wrong. I can confirm that all Infinity Engine games were distributed in Poland DRM-free (thou not before 2009, I think) by CD Projekt, the same company that stands behind gog.com.

To speak of something else. I got a new laptop, and tried WideScreenMod for the first time. Nice. However perusing the first post in this thread made me wonder if I should put ToBex on my installation before the wide screen mod? Both mods states they have to go first, and both mods adresses the .exe. Would I be better off applying ToBex before anything else?

Cheers

They're independent. Moreover, the note about Widescreen being the first mod is outdated (at least for BG2): having it late makes it compatible with alternate GUIs (again, in BG2) and makes it easier to change resolution without having to reinstall ALL mods.

 Too many versions of ToBEX in the same folder, should've moved it to another folder.

PoI: when ToBEx moves to a next iteration, does that mean all previous versions are tested and bug-free? i ask because i want to take it into account for a mod and just need to know what the most recent working version is.

No, I think beta 0019 is the most stable so far. There are still a few problems with it as described in the public test release change log:

-Removed: Brighten On Disable Brightest No3d Fix
-Attacks Per Round Mod Fix: Corrected the use of incorrect base value for percentage type
-Configurable Backstab Restrictions: Fixed a bug where non-barbarians with immunity to backstab could still get backstabbed
-Level One Proficiency Restrictions: Fixed some consistency issues
-IWD Style Strength Mod: Corrected the use of incorrect base value for percentage type
-IWD Style Cats Grace Dexterity Mod: Corrected the use of incorrect base value for percentage type
-Repeating Effect Fix: Fixed a bug where the effect would not work properly on permanent timings

Unfortunately, due to the nature of hacking the executable I cannot guarantee any stability whatsoever. With each release, the existing hacks probably become more bug-free, but the newer stuff is more prone to bugs. I try to minimise these, but I will almost certainly miss out on testing a particular scenario that surfaces the bug. Definitely a test of time.

You can take SCS and SCSII off the list of mods that modify the executable, if you like: they only do it via ToBEx now. (Well, unless you explicitly disable it when installing SCS, but people who know how to do that don't need hand-holding!)
