You can install the Wear Multiple Protection Items component of G3 IWD Tweak Pack to get around the limitation if you wish.

You can also go around the rule by just making a new .txt file, then pasting this code on it:
2DA V1.0 0 VALUE CLCK01 0And then renaming it as itemexcl.2da and then put it to your override folder.

Now for a more general question on equipment.
How do I tell which is better?
Like BlackBow:
Damage: +3
THAC0: +4
Speed: 4
and Messenger of Sseth:
Damage: +1
THAC0: +2
Special: Extremely fast
Speed Factor: 3
or the Daisy crossbow and the Heavy Crossbow of Speed(and its Light counterpart for that matter).

Well, there is no simple answer, as it totally depends on what kind of enemy you'll face...Now for a more general question on equipment.
How do I tell which is better?
For example the "Special: Extremely fast" means that you'll get 1 attack more. Now I think it's the same with the xbows, so if you have a proficiency in crossbows, you need to use them...
Generally if you face a mage you'll need many hits with less Thac0, while against fighters, you'll need better Thac0, more damage and less hits.

Or just explain the performance statistics.
Damage is self-explanatory.
But the other statistics are just screwy.... AD&D2 sux

I mean - why the hell is lower armor class better. And while we're at it - lower or higher is better for the THAC0 and speed factors?

Thac0, as in: To Hit Armor Class Zero(0). Or something very much alike. Now, the lower, the better, but you need to understand that usually the +1 is a bonus, not a negative modifier. Then whats the complicated one?
Or just explain the performance statistics.

So a +1 weapon: Like Short Bow +1:
Damage: +1
THAC0: +1
Speed: 5
Proficiency Type: Short Bow
Type: 2-handed
Requires: 3 Strength
Not Usable By:
Druid
Cleric
Mage
... makes +1 damage, and gives you 5% more chance of hitting the opponent(THAC0: +1), and makes you a bit faster to attack the target.
AC is also, the lower, the better, cause of the above rule.

Speed factor of 0 is fastest and 10 is slowest. What about speed? Lower or higher is better?
"Ok, I've just about had my FILL of riddle asking, quest assigning, insult throwing, pun hurling, hostage taking, iron mongering, smart-arsed fools, freaks, and felons that continually test my will, mettle, strength, intelligence, and most of all, patience! If you've got a straight answer ANYWHERE in that bent little head of yours, I want to hear it pretty damn quick or I'm going to take a large blunt object roughly the size of Elminster AND his hat, and stuff it lengthwise into a crevice of your being so seldom seen that even the denizens of the nine hells themselves wouldn't touch it with a twenty-foot rusty halberd! Have I MADE myself perfectly CLEAR?!"
