Slowly working on a quest, and I'm looking for thoughts on what you guys think are the most fun things to do when playing the BG series--or any Infinity Engine game!

Some examples would be:
  • Combat
  • Pickpocketing
  • Puzzles
  • Sneaking and assassination
  • Stealing
:D

Are you making a thief mod? :P

I love puzzles! I know that puzzles aren't always the center of an RPG but I can't help it: I grew up on puzzle games!

sneaking and assassination sounds good. especially the assassination part. I love turning off the reputation thing and go and imprison every npc out there :P

I like puzzles, but they're tough to write and tough to calibrate for an RPG audience.

A general puzzle and assassination. Preferably one which you actually have to think about what you are doing and try and stay stealthy, instead of being able to simply go in guns-blazing.

Roleplay is cool! Interesting combat. Not just harder combat, but something different/new.

Roleplay/moral choices. Oh, wait. BGII... well, then just the roleplay, as there are not *that* many moral choices :)

Puzzles, relying on your intelligence to get around. Combat, combat, combat gets very boring very quickly.

I always enjoyed the riddles in BGII. Sneaking around is also fun as well as an alternative to fighting. Clashing swords should not be the only solution.

Besides roleplaying, looting houses ;P sneak attacks are great too. I don't like pickpoketing that much because I need to reload each time I fail 9_9

I enjoy the ability to make up your morals and stance, though you could never be really evil in BG

* Exploring new areas. New maps are cool.
* Getting new side-quests in addition to the main quest, especially if they require recruiting a new NPC for whatever period to complete the side-quest. Example: Valygar and the Planar Sphere.
* Finding a new lady to romance.
* New combat that requires new tactics even if there are no new weapons or spells to use; for example, it was a bit of a jolt the first time I encountered magic-resistant monsters and had to rely on non-magical weapons while my mages made tea and chocolate cake to keep themselves occupied.

I find puzzles become tiresome after you've completed them once. "Put your hand in my mouth" 12 times....
I did battle with monsters, and they became me, and when I gazed into the abyss, the abyss looked away shyly.

Ah, yes, what Scipio said - I like puzzles, but I also like multiple solutions and paths in a storyline to make it less repetitive.

Epic fights and roleplaying.

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

I like having to choose between not clearly cut good/evil options especially when they do not have 100 percent expectable outcomes.

Thanks, all! Dialogue and roleplaying is of course a huge part of BGII, but the puzzles, combat, sneaking and other mechanics are also important; I think these underlying mechanics in the game contribute in large part to our enjoyment of it, and I want to try to include that in my quest

Hopefully this thread will be interesting to anyone else who's working on quests or considering it--for those who haven't, you should. It's great fun. :D

Zyraen's got a Statue of Riddles helper as part of the Miscellany hosted at PPG. It's also got an Ust Natha accellerator that I wouldn't be able to live without.

Yeah, after the first couple times through the Statue of riddles, you just want to click through it, but K'aeloree's talking about a new mod. We won't have played those puzzles before.

Despite the fact that I tend to write NPC mods myself and look forward to the release of some by other modders, I'm not advocating the creation of an NPC mod just for the sake of having a new mod. If somebody's got an NPC that *has* to be written, because it's burning its way out of the modder's skull, it will probably be good, but if it's just to make the game more fun, how about giving the already existing NPCs more to do? Quests, non-combat challenges.
