I just answered this question in the Ultimate guide blog and I'm reposting it here:

"it seems that the game lag and the fps drop. My computer is intel Dual core 1.86 ghz 2mb ram e ati radeon 4870."

It's probably the graphic card. I recently purchased the same card and I'm having FPS drops. With my older card everything was ok. To improve performance go to the Torment.ini and set Translucent Shadows=0. Also go to the control panel and set all 3d settings to "use application settings" and also disable triple buffering and adaptive anti-aliasing. This will improve your performance somewhat. If the game's FPS are still very low, then lower the hardware acceleration to one above "none" (desktop-> properties-> settings-> advanced-> troubleshooting) This will most likely fix the fps problem but it may introduce other graphical glitches.

As I said it's most likely the gprahic's card problem. Any other suggestions that could improve perforce (and help us avoid lowering hardware acceleration) are welcome.

Hello, new user here. I must say I like this forum. Unfortunately, I DO have a problem. I just re-installed P-T (4 disk) and patched to 1.1, then added big fix patch. Played with no problems to "The Tomb", upon stepping on the sigil on the floor the second time (to be killed and return again to the entry hall), the game froze, and I had to terminate. Now when I try to run the game, I get the following error: an assertion failed .... ChDimm.cpp at line number 787.

I do not have any other mods, hacks, cracks installed.
The disks are ISO's on my hard-drive, and the .ini file reflects the ISO locations.

I haven't had any problems until now, and any help would be appreciated.

P.S.: I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere in this forum, or is this is the wrong place for such a request, my searches of this forum showed no hits. The only relevent hit I googled was a broken link, so I am desperate :-)

TIA- Greaph

It is a graphics card issue... you've probably got an NVidia card in the 6000-8000 range. Unfortunately they don't seem interested in fixing this issue. There are a number of threads around with suggestions on how to deal with it, including toggling the video settings and so forth.

Some people have also had good results from the information in this thread:

Just something you might want to consider including is the common errors that may come up during installation. I know I have had many hour scouring for help with widescreen alone to get errors with the ui mod afterwards, just a centralised thread or article I just reinstalled after a few years and know the headaches it can cause, I know something like that would be appreciated by a number of people. Hell I got two different errors in a row now thats fun.

Sounds like a good idea, but I'm not that sure what the common errors are :-/

Look for the 4.0 update to the guide very soon!

Ok, so I found time for the update. The guide should now be in line with all the latest versions of all the mods. Please let me know if I've missed something.

Thanks once again to Qwinn, GhostDog, Biggs, etc, for their outstanding work in making Planescape: Torment more enjoyable to play than ever before!

Hi I've been playing PST for a few years (2 disc) But now I've got windows 7. For a while I had to unistall and reinstall everytime I exited the game if i wanted to play again. Now It won't go to menu or in game at all it does is give the error "An assertion failed in D:\Torment\Source\baldur\InfGame.cpp at line number 6299." I noticed a guy had a similair problen he posted in this thread but the line number of the assertion is different from his. Is it something else or do I need to goto the thread he was sent to? Ca anyone help me?

Well, I just had a forced upgrade to Windows 7... still working on getting everything set up. Haven't installed PS:T yet, but will let you know if I have any issues.

I didn't have any similar problems, I'm afraid, other than the usual nonsense:

1) Do not install it to a Program Files directory. I installed it to C:\Torment.
2) When I deliberately exit from the game, I get a brief "Planescape Torment has stopped working. Looking for a solution." and I have to cancel or let it finish and close it out. Just an annoyance, doesn't interfere with gameplay though.
3) Possibly related to #2, the whole "Register your product, Are you sure you really want to forfeit" that used to only come up once is now coming up every time, which is annoying. I even tried sending a registration to the defunct website it attempts to send it to, and it *still* comes up every time. Anyone know if there's an INI setting or some other way to turn that off?

Delete the ereg folder out of PST directory. One of the first things I do when I make a new PST install.

Those interested in the classic TBS game Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri / Alien Crossover should check out the unofficial patch I work on here.

Cool, thanks! That's one down. Didn't have to do it back when I was on XP, but hey, deleting a folder's easy.

So, only recurring issue I've got is the annoying error message whenever exiting out. Not that big a deal, but if someone knows how to get rid of it, that'd be cool.

Thanks installing in a different location worked. It's playing just like it did when I had xp. Hey, what do you guys think? Should someone Revamp PST? I mean like uprade the game so that you can not only play using classic view, others as well like 1st person, and 3rd person behind view things like that and make graphics better. Do think someone should?

Ghostdog:

Just thought I'd point out, the guide's got a really good tip for 4CD users... copy CD2 thru CD4 into a single directory called CDALL or somesuch, then point the Torment.ini CD2 thru CD4 to that. There really is a whole lot of duplication going on, to reduce the need for disk switching, but on a full install that's totally unnecessary. Saved about 500 megs on my hard drive that way.

Hello,
Qwinn
You guys did great job!so is ThunderPeel2001
thanks very much !
I have a quesiton , I installed english version, y installed spanish packages
then
If I need to installed all the 3CD(2,3,4) in harddisk?like copy all the 'bif' things to a new folder.

or I can mount all the 3CDs en DEAMONTOOL?
when I mount the 2nd CD, it work.

What I only wanna is to imporve the font display(my old LCD screen is 1400*1050 mode)(I think it's Digg and Gostdog's patch),my question is if I can do the 2nd step o not .

In ThunderPeel2001's steps,he writes>>
Step 2: Improve loading times on faster machines (Required)
Note: The step is necessary before you can perform the Steps 3a and b, below.

"but on a full install that's totally unnecessary. "
because this sentence make me confused

Thanks !

yea i got the 2 disk u have to remember that u cannot edit things in c program files for windows 7.i put it on desktop and tried everything they told me on the forums just a few x boxes popped up as if i hadn't changed anything im starting to think that its just not compatable with 7 or there is another more specified but simple answer.only problem is im ignorant of this stuff and i have to be told in absolute detail in some areas.like winrar does it count as mounting if u just extract onto the hardrive?i.d.k. ill have to look that up that might be the problem i never mounted anything and i dont have a disk drive.im sure u can virtually mount
