...And it's two in the morning and I'm posting a topic, but oh well, here goes...

After doing countless charcoal and pencil sketches, paintings and sculptures in my AP Art Class, I realized distinctly how much I liked working with portraits. But after seeing so many incredible and inspirational pieces of art generated through Paint Shop, Poser, Photoshop etc, I decided it was about time to step it up. and try something new! I recently got a tablet and I absolutely adore it, but beyond me using it for my basic sketches and photography editing, I've never actually *painted* something with it. Until now.

I know that it's awfully horrendous and ghoulish compared to some of the fantastic art I've seen posted on here, but I will say that I am very happy with how it turned out despite the flaws it has.

Oh, and feel more that free to give me feedback. Whether it's praise or good ole' blunt criticism. I love the feeling of improving!

O-o

THAT is flawed?
Uhhuhh...
OMG, I'm such an no-talent hack... XD
Well, sure, the ear-piercings don't fit in, but otherwise that's very awesome.

So, er. You made that from scratch on a first attempt? xD

My first computer portrait attempt that was created in a span of about 9 hours. xD

Yeah, he's supposed to look "mischievious" and those ear piercings are his trademark thing. I tried to make them shiny, cause well...I like shiny things. :D
But I had no idea how to get the light to "shine" and look metal-ish. Eh, I guess I'll figure it out eventually.

Not that bad ;-)
As Legion said, ear piercings look odd, probably you need to make the more blurred.
The next thing to fix is the nose, it looks as it misses a piece o_O the part of the nose attached to the face is ok, but you need to make the point "longer".
The eye maybe needs eyelashes, but it doesn't look that bad.
Lips are perfect.
The lock of hair laying on her cheek is... weird, it looks almost like dreadlocks. It's because it ends "abruplty" while someone would expect it to split in smaller locks of hair.

First off, thanks a ton sweetie!

Yeah, the piercings were definetely the most challenging thing for me and now that I look at them a bit more analytically, I think you're right!

But I'll definetely try and edit this one! Thanks for the criticism!

Nice work. Um, can't think of much to criticise, except you might want to include the shoulders if you're going to make it into a BG-style portrait.

Oh I could go on and on about what I don't like, but hey, practice makes perfect! And about the BG style, I think I'll make the neck more defined, add some shoulders and the top of a tunic for my next one. And fix those piercings! *grumble grumble*

Are you kidding me? It's freaking awesome! @_@
It looks like it's rendered! You are so good in lighting and shading!

Epantiras ir right about the nose thingy though. If you compare your pic with your current avatar you'll easily notice what's wrong there. ;) Also, the piercings are as mentioned a little too sharp, compared to the rest of the pic. Blurring for less sharpness and a new layer set to screen for light thingys (if you like so much shiny ones) should do the trick. :D

Awww thanks m'dear, I'm glad you like it!

Funny how when you post it, you think it's pretty good, not perfect and then you get all that (wonderful) criticism, you look at your piece again and say, "By the gods, it's pretty bad!" I remembered that I somewhat forgot a nostril which is why I think the nose looks for lack of more articulate vocabulary...strange. And I figured out the piercings, just had to play around with a few other things. The worst thing is that *he* still looks like a girl. That's what bugs me the most. It seems that I shall have to practice more on those elven male studs.

I agree that the dreadlock and piercings stick out, and maybe you could add eyelashes, but the rest is very, very good. I love the lips, they look so very kissable!

He's a guy! ^_^

Well, I thought *she* has some masculine traits in her face, but I was totally fooled by the fat lips. Well, if you don't want to alter them, I'd suggest you to add more shadows on his left cheek (hollow cheek make people look more masculine). BTW does he have cat eyes? His pupils look vertical rather than round.

I know! Everytime someone mistakes him for a girl I start cracking up. :D I think it's because I'm so accustomed to drawing and painting female subject matter as you've seen in my previous avatars, and whenever I attempt to draw someone on the masculine end of the spectrum they emerge looking rather feminine. Argh. I'm actually working on the cheek as we speak and I'm fixing the eyes too. I wanted "dramatic" shadow to portray mysteriousness but now he looks like Alice Cooper.

 :D ;)

Okay, so after a few hours of trial and error I think it's better I daresay. Or not. :P

Went for a more subtle tone on the piercings, fixed the horrendous cat-like eyeliner, enhanced some shadows all other miscellaneous changes.

Yeah, the piercings don't stand out now, and he has a complete nose, so all the previous gripes are corrected. :)

Now for the new ones! XD Now, I'm not an expert in the subject by any means, but:

The shadow cast by his nose looks a little weird.

I think what makes the piercings look weird is that I don't think they have shadows...

Otherwise, utterly brilliant work!

Yeahh, looking more perfect that before now. ^^

Only one gripe springs to mind, since you even magnified it now. What's with the weird mess he's got hanging in his hair just by his ear? O-o
You used a very smoooooothed out look for most of the hair, so in comparison, that looks a great deal like pigeon-bombings or bubble-gum. .p

Still.

Kinda looks like a turkey's head hanging limply off the guy's head, no :D ?

The face is quite nicely realistic. Even without the turkey head, though, the hair doesn't quite match that realism (of course, if the hair is still in progress, you may disregard this).

Keep up the good work :) .

Ah, yes, mayhaps it is a symbol of this guy going cold turkey on something? :D
Indeed, he is looking longingly at something, surely it must be something he is thoroughly addicted to.

I think the (rest of the) hair is sorta stylish as is. Certainly not realistic looking, but stylish. The portrait is kinda realistic in a thin-faced elven manner, but it's not very textured, so think the smoothed hairs suit it quite fine, but ehheh.
