Last time I was here is apperently wiped out of my memory. Seemingly I registered here for some sort of reason back in 2003 o.O. Getting a mod perhaps for some or other game, but I've yet to post.
A bit odd way to get people "active" once again on the forums especially since I rarely use the email address that was assigned to these forums. Irony of life, especially when the past seems to catch you unaware and with your pants down. So out of respect, salutations SHS

Mass PMs are blocked to all members. Only staff and modders have the ability to mass PM for this very reason.
Ah, I see. So the guy sends them manually via a script or something? Man, that either takes patience or mad hacker skills(well, mad to your average programmer, that is).
By the way, you'll be laughing, folks, but I just got a notification - a new message from Bioware.RU boards. Seems like our friend mignulikz just got another playground.

It takes 450$ and reading the first result on Google for 'forum spam bot' - just like you need $300 and a walk to the mall to get a gun (in the USA).Ah, I see. Is there a way to tell if the creator of the bot has found a back door way of sending mass PMs or is sending them (what is the max, like 6?) at a time?Mass PMs are blocked to all members. Only staff and modders have the ability to mass PM for this very reason.
"Ok, I've just about had my FILL of riddle asking, quest assigning, insult throwing, pun hurling, hostage taking, iron mongering, smart-arsed fools, freaks, and felons that continually test my will, mettle, strength, intelligence, and most of all, patience! If you've got a straight answer ANYWHERE in that bent little head of yours, I want to hear it pretty damn quick or I'm going to take a large blunt object roughly the size of Elminster AND his hat, and stuff it lengthwise into a crevice of your being so seldom seen that even the denizens of the nine hells themselves wouldn't touch it with a twenty-foot rusty halberd! Have I MADE myself perfectly CLEAR?!"

Ye gods. I hope this spammer has... lots of children. Yes. (to myself) This sounds a good enough curse.

The "mass PM" thing you're talking about is only available to you because you are a member of the Modder usergroup. Normal members do not get this benefit, and can only send a PM to one person at a time.Is there a way to tell if the creator of the bot has found a back door way of sending mass PMs or is sending them (what is the max, like 6?) at a time?
And no, no backdoor. The spambot is simply sending out more than 11000 individual PMs. It's not that difficult to create a loop which reads a profile page based on user id, checks the username and then sends a http post request with the relevant parameters. I could do it, bigg could do it, and I'm pretty sure anyone with an inkling of the http protocol and rudimentary knowledge in a programming/scripting language could do it. It would take a little bit of time to cycle through all 11k members (especially since there's (d)dos protection on the server which restricts the number of simultaneous connections from a single IP), but it's definitely possible.
The only tricky part would be to get through the CAPTCHA. The rest is easy.

On the bright side, the bots reminded me that this place existed.
Same here! It's been some time since I visited the forums...
Sometimes I lie awake at night and ask "Why me?" Then a voice answers, "Nothing personal, your name just happened to come up."

With the many people coming back because of the spam, made me think you should put out are own mass messages letting people know whats new when something big happens like when FFT comes out. Not very often, but a few times a year.

Heh, another one like that here. Being a long time since I last stumbled on this page. It's nice to be here again. So in a way, the spammer did something good. For me, at least.
And being the curious bastard that I am, I actually clicked the link posted. I knew it's probably a spam or something similar, but it's nothing a good virus protection couldn't handle.

I know. The fun fact is, I got a PM from the very same username - I compared them via copy-and-paste. Seems our guy is of some international infamy.

We've got G3 newsfeeds and announcement boards for that. If folks want to, they can subscribe to a feed and receive notifications or whatever - not everyone would want "official" spam. Besides, PM boxes are awfully small as is.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOOHOO! What a Ride!
