What happened to my familiar???

Just to double-chck, I loaded the final save from SoA, and noticed that my familiar was missing there, too! Which leads me to believe that at some point, the game gave my PC some items, he had no inventory space, and proceeded to drop my familiar, and for some reason I didn't notice.
So, my question is, how the heck do I get my familiar back and upgraded to ToB-level? I tried doing a "CreateItem(FAMFER)" or "CreateItem(FAMFER25)", but when I try to release them from my inventory, nothing happens (the item just disappears). Doing a "CreateCreature(FAMFER)" or "CreateCreature(FAMFER25)" creates the familiar itself, and ic an put it it in my inventory, but again, releasing from my inventory does nothing (the item just disappears). Moreover, my character has 66 health, which, given a con of 16 and some cursory math (6 + 4.5 * 9 + for a level 18 mage, indicates that my character still has the 12 health bonus from the original familiar (not upgraded to the 24 health bonus I presume, nor lost from having a familiar die).
Out of frustratin, I created about 10 ferrets via CreateCreature and killed them all, trying to see if I could get the game to register that I had killed my ferret, give me the 1 CON penalty, and let me summon a new one, but that didn't work either (they just die harmlessly).
Help!

This is like my millionth play through, though my only second mage playthrough from SoA to ToB (i generally tend to stop after finishing SoA), and when I was trying to pickpocket someone with my familiar, I noticed that my ferret is gone! I thought maybe he disappeared during the import, so I tried casting "Find Familiar" again, only to be confronted with a "A familiar has already been summoned" message.

actually, for some reason, doing the "CreateCreature" thing indoors worked, as the creature now appears (and registers as being my familiar) when i release them from my inventory.

Glad to hear you got your familiar back.
I am about to start a new game of BG2 playing a mage as my character, which I've not done before.
Have not figured out how to get a mage's familiar to appear, and would like to find out how. If you could, would someone please explain the step by step process to me?
Thanks.

You need to cast the spell Find Familiar. Your alignment determines which familiar you get.
That's as complicated as it gets The only difficulty is either finding a scroll in someone's treasure, or buying it from a shop. Otherwise, cast it once and you're set. Just try not to let it get killed, your best bet is to keep the creature in your pack most of the time when there's combat likely.
Back from the brink.
Like RPGs? Like Star Wars? Think combining the two would be fun? Read Darths and Droids, and discover the line "Jar Jar, you're a genius".
These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.
