I have a level 1 sorcerer that I would like to change into a level 1 mage so I can gain more experience with the various spells. I don't really want to cheat. I want to make it as though I have always been a level 1 mage, and I don't think that should be too hard since I'm only level 1. Is it possible for me to do this? And more importantly, which editor would I use given that I'm using BGT?

Go into Shadowkeeper and change it as you would a normal character. Class from Sorcerer to Mage.

Well I've just located some more information and a couple of forum posts (1 here, 1 elsewhere) say not to use Shadowkeeper as it has problems with WeiDU modified key files... nobody mentioned what kind of problems. Can anyone confirm or deny? I don't want to cause some problem with my game that I am not going to notice until later. I did, of course, back up my saves, by the way.

Well, if the ShadowKeeper gives you warning that it has lost files(reports of finding unknown file or some-such-what-ever) you might lose something in the edited save(as you save the edited chars etc. to different file), but it doesn't touch the original file, so it's OK to use it to check at least whether the program gives you errors.

Or... you could always just restart, can't you?

Alright, thanks to both of you. I created a new mage character as I would have in the beginning of the game, and simply copied all relevant information from that character to my normal character using Shadowkeeper. There were no errors or anything. The only thing that bothered me was the 1000 - 2000 experience I got for every scroll I clicked "Write Magic" for. That seemed like way too much. I gained 11,000 experience.

And of course, it gave all of said experience to the characters with me when I plan on given one or two of them the boot... so now I am stuck waiting to learn spells until I have the party I want. :P

Or you can dump them and immediately pick them up again. :P

With a "BGT Tweak Pack" component you have removed the BGT experience to normal BG2 experience. That's why you have this amount of XP in BG1, too. You can use "Ding0's Experience Fixer" or "BP-Balancer" to adjust the XP for Spell Learning, Disarm Traps and Lock Picks.

A Megamod does not mean that you can play all of the mods or all of their content,
but you have more choices or paths through the game.
