I've done a scaled down BiG World installation and started playing from Candlekeep. I had no issues there, but upon leaving, every enemy I encounter is insanely difficult. A wolf kills me in 1 or 2 hits. I am at the Friendly Arm Inn, I happened to run into Tarnesh, and he kills me before I even get him past Uninjured. My party consists of myself (A level 1 Sorceror w/ Burning Hands and Magic Missile), Imoen (Level 1), and Eldoth (Level 3). I am playing on the Core-Rules difficulty. Is there a mod causing this? Here is my log:

I've done a scaled down BiG World installation and started playing from Candlekeep. I had no issues there, but upon leaving, every enemy I encounter is insanely difficult. A wolf kills me in 1 or 2 hits. I am at the Friendly Arm Inn, I happened to run into Tarnesh, and he kills me before I even get him past Uninjured. My party consists of myself (A level 1 Sorcerer w/ Burning Hands and Magic Missile), Imoen (Level 1), and Eldoth (Level 3). I am playing on the Core-Rules difficulty. Is there a mod causing this?

No, none of the mods make the game any harder than it is in the original Baldur's Gate game, as you only have level 1 char and a mage/sorcerer, you can only have maximum of 6 hit points on your main char, you are going to die from the first or the second hit they land! That's why great AC is the key to the game at early levels, and the mage/sorcerer is the worst class you can start at level 1, low hit points and bad AC, as there is no(well wouldn't be any*) armors. Even Barbarian has only 17 hit points, if he is half-orc.
Welcome to the real AD&D.

*If the rules were the old BG1 rules.

Yeah, I actually just came back to repost. Things seem quite a bit more manageable after playing a bit longer... difficult, but reasonable. I can kill wolves now for instance. Tarnesh is still impossible for the most part though. I actually have some AD&D experience... but only from 3.5. I also don't remember SoA being anywhere near as challenging, though you start at higher levels and, as you pointed out, some classes are better than others at level 1. Finally, I missed out on Xzar and Montaron.... they are a big help. I needed Montaron especially as a tank. As for Tarnesh, I suppose I will find a way to avoid him for now... though he seems to be intended as an early encounter given his dialogue.

Well, if you take into account that he is at least 5th level mage(as he can cast lightning bolt), it might not be so not obviously bad idea to wait a while... especially with a mage player char.

If I recall, there is an early NPC encounter added by a mod by an insane man that wanted to cut out my liver or something like that. He was all but impossible to kill at low levels. I had to cheat, raise my stats, and even then it was next to impossible to get past him. He made Tarnesh look weak.
Nihilism makes me smile.

That's only if you are mad enough to have a Wildmage, and that's not even in the standard BWP, for the exact reason he is difficult... but he is actually easy as piece of pie, if you know what to do. And Tarnesh might be a little easier after the 10000xp you gain from the Magnificent guy.

I usually find with Tarnesh, lure him towards some of the guards, who'll help you slice'n'dice him.

This is usually what I do as well, although I've never been hit 2 times and been slain before. I wouldn't mind knowing the mods you installed, sounds like that would be one nice challenge.

Have you tried toning the difficulty down a little? Maybe increasing your CON, or try for a higher roll in stats?

Just curious because... I did a test once on BG1 and put CON to 3 on a Mage (all his other stats were the lowest they could get) and he had 10 HP's; didn't even survive the fire arrow from Tamoko.

How'd you survive with 6 HP's?

Actually, my HP stats are as follows:
Me: 4 (Yes... 4. 12 CON)
Imoen: 8
Eldoth: 15
Montaron: 9
Xzar: 8

Why do Imoen and Xzar have the same HP? Imoen is a Level 1 Thief w/ 16 CON, and Xzar is a Level 1 Necromancer w/ 10 CON.

Wow... I just luring him to the guards... he caused all of my party members but one to sleep.. the one that didn't sleep panicked, that was his first move. Next he chased down the panicker, killed him. Then he killed all of the sleepers, and finally killed me. The guards were attacking him the entire time. He remain uninjured the entire time. The only chance I have is to not go near him... but the game points you towards the location right away, he approaches and eventually attacks you no matter what you do. So my only option is to reload my game? This seems like bad game design... otherwise some mod or combination of mods is making me too weak or him too strong.

EDIT: I've also realized that I can't even enter the inn without getting through him... this is discouraging.

I had some tough times with him as well in my BWP installs. But I considered the challenge fun and managed to defeat him eventually, and truly he is a really easy to defeat compared with other mages that you meet if you know where to go. Anyway the last two times when I defeated him were: in BWP 5.6 - my main a character a watcher of helm (cleric), imoen, and ajantis and it was really easy, he just got cut down. Maybe you have to load the game a couple of times until you get things right but so what... In BWP 5.5.2 - my main character still a watcher of helm, with imoen, didn't get ajantis yet, and maybe that made the encounter with Tarnesh a lot more difficult than it was supposed to be- after a lot of game loads and checking every possibility to defeat him outside I finally got the inspiration to go inside friendly arms inn and get jaheira and khalid and won the battle with no problems. You could try that if you think it's too hard. Good luck! Oh and by the way don't rely on the guards because they are useless, they don't touch him at all and he just ignores them.

I did a test once on BG1 and put CON to 3 on a Mage (all his other stats were the lowest they could get) and he had 10 HP's; didn't even survive the fire arrow from Tamoko.

How'd you survive with 6 HP's?

You had 10 hitpoints, because the creature creation process is crooked in your game, the 1 level mage with Con of 3 should actually have only 3 hit point. And how would you survive with 3 hitpoints, not very well. This is the AD&D ruleset. And the original Baldur's Gate used these rules!!! So you should use them too.

Excuse my ignorance, but what mod places this "ruleset" in BG1? Hopefully one that works with BGII as well (I like consistency).

You are excused; as all the games use that ruleset, except of course that the BG1(and thus the BGT, BGTutu, EasyTutu, and Classic Adventure) starts with 0 xp on the character creation, while BGTotSC goes from 89000 xp to 161000 xp, and still BG2:SoA with 89000 xp(with Kits), and BG2:ToB with 2500000 xp(expanded rules, with Kits, HLAs etc).

Or at least that's the intent, Ascension64 has had a few problems with the BGTs, chars as there are so many variabilities of them... and having to do it three or four times doesn't help either. :(

I'm confused, BG2 used the proper ruleset, but BG1 used a more 'crooked' version? Or is that fixed when you change the difficulty? Because I've beaten BG1 + ToSC on the hardest difficulty with no real problems or change in HP's, except the monsters were more difficult and dropped more XP.

Well, if the mod(in this case the BGT) has a incorrect patch for the hit points, because it's moded in trying to solve few bigger problems, the result might result into a small difference(as you reported to get 10 hit points when you should get 3 at level 1)...

Now, if you want to get rid of the BWPs experience drain(as you say the monsters drop less experience), you just install different mod components from the XPmod and BP-BALANCER, if you wish... or you could read the mods readmes... <_<
If the problem is that you didn't know. :P

Experience was never a real issue with me, I like normal experience (not more for a harder difficulty, sort of defeats the purpose of it being "hard").

It was just me getting 10 HP's on my mage instead of 3.

Then again, I usually only play fighters.

I've reported this issue in the BGT forum: http://www.shsforums...showtopic=38390.

What level were your characters when you cleared the bandit camp?

SCS will make the mages and priests much smarter. They use spells that knock the party out like sleep or command and then proceed to slay each character one by one. The thing is you are maybe level 1 to 3 so your saves suck, and the spells always work. Try to trigger the mage with one character as a distraction, then attack with everyone else.

Also very important, have everyone use missile weapons until they level up. Even my pc with 14hp (level 1 paladin) was getting offed by wolves and hobgobs in the beginning. The weaker party members just die even quicker. Run when you can and pelt the enemies from a distance.

You are in for a real treat with the spellcasting groups of bounty hunters. The two originals are really beefed up. I seriously had to reload at least ten times each. If they haste and then attack you are finished. Disperse your party if you can and do hit and run, and try to take out the weaker ones first.

Watch out for the regular bounty hunters too, even one of those suckers can take out a low level party. Again try to run around so they waste spells and can't hit the whole party. I only had two good tanks in my party and a bunch of archers and mages without spells, so it might be easier with more fighters.

One last thing - get the wand of monster summoning, one of the best ways of dealing with pesky BG1 mages.

Good luck!
