Indeed and there's always a chance to show other dimensions in NPC that aren't obvious in their vanilla banter, as long as it's in line with their general personalities (and ability scores for that matter).
I'm trying to move away from writing banters for Jan (family stories, turnips), Cernd (nature proverbs), Minsc (fighting evil with Boo), and Nalia (helping the needy), and Valygar (I hate magic, there's nothing else I have to say) but it is a challenge, especially if you don't play that NPC very much. Perhaps reading some good fan fiction would help with this.
Anyway glad to see Cason is back on track. I think Baldur's Gate needs more sort-of-evil-but-not-totally NPC's that have a lot of grey areas that could be looked at differently.

I agree. I don't think I've ever created a character in any context that was fully good or fully evil and I think that kind of characters are a little weird. After all, how many Lawful Good or Chaotic Evil people do you know in real life?
Something like 75% or so of my PCs have been either LN, TN or CN for pretty much that reason. And about 60% have been thieves. So I'm hopefully prepared for bringing a chaotic neutral swashbuckler into the world.
One interesting thing about the last part of your post (about looking at grey areas differently) that I've been thinking about while writing Cason is how NPCs view their own morality. If the NPCs were aware of the alignment system I doubt that all of them would nail their own alignment. For example, pre-knighting Anomen probably likes to think that he's Lawful Good (he certainly acts like the worst kind of LG paladin) and Sarevok would likely place himself at Lawful Neutral (very few see themselves as evil after all and in his own eyes, I'm sure he had great motivation for murder and war-mongering). Cason, on the other hand, is one of the few mentioned above and probably pictures himself as Chaotic Evil (which in itself probably is one of the reasons he isn't completely without morals).

Disagree with Sarevok. He's all for killing the weak and letting his friends die. Hell, he'll betray you without an oath (usually). I'm pretty sure he knows, and is proud of, his CE alignment.
I don't doubt that it's a fitting alignment for him but people very rarely sees themselves as evil. Take Hitler for example, most people would probably put him as Lawful or Neutral Evil but if you asked him personally, he'd probably say he was Lawful Good (and that all Jews are Lawful Evil).

Sooo; If not CE/NE, it's CN, or perhaps even TN for Cason then?Cason, on the other hand, is one of the few mentioned above and probably pictures himself as Chaotic Evil (which in itself probably is one of the reasons he isn't completely without morals).
Edit; Spelling and such, as always.
Edit2; Should mention SOMETHING on topic i guess.

He looks a lot like Ronon from Stargate: Atlantis. Now I expect him to be a fighting machine.
That's not a coincidence (and I'm surprised that you're the first one to point it out) since Cason's picture is based on a picture of Ronon. He has Valygar's eyes though. Literally.

I think Sarevok's passion-driven nature makes a good case for Chaotic as his core mentality, though he's good enough about suppressing it to take advantage of the benefits of subterfuge and manipulation in the relatively short term.
"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

Although not in BG2, the history of Safana from BG1 implies she was a pirate. And once a Pirate, always a Pirate!I think pirates are kinda sweet...and since BG2 already has a pirate town I figured a joinable pirate NPC would fit right in.
So... are there any? (Of course, some general opinions on the idea would be nice as well and if people are interested, I could share some of my thoughts on the subject.)
Anybody wanna make a Safana for BG2 mod?
