Well, I never thought I'd see a Mind Flayer
NPC that might actually work. Still, I would like these dillemas worked out before I decide to give it a try.
As some of the people here probably know, mind flayers , Illithids as it were, originated from the Lower Plane of The Great Ring called Limbo. They were the faction of The People, the supposed primordial race (or true race as the Githzerai claim), that turned on their kin and proceeded to waging wars of conquest on all the other "False" Planes. Inherently, they are supposed to be evil, power-hungry arrogant and delusional creatures that see all other races as slaves or fodder.
So, the major question you have to deal with is: What on the Planes happened that actually made him accept servitude, when, in fact, Illithinds would rather be dead before becoming slaves.
So, these would be my questions:
1:What is his Plane of origin?
2: (Not necessary)Was it a plane of Law, of Neutrality or of Chaos? Note: Answering this will shed some light on his attitude and choice of desertion from his people.
3.(Would be nice to know)Was he in any war against any other planar races? If yes, which?
4.(As above)Was any of these races he had the chance to fight against the Githyanki or The People? Note: These are their supposed "kin" and confronting either would have an impact on his disgust towards them or his spite.
5. (This would be pretty good to know)What the Heck is he doing on Toril(The Prime Material Plane)? From what I know, the Illithinds have a campaign going in the underdark, not necessarily Amn's Underdark. The most likely place from which he could have come would be one of the Illithid Headquarters in the Underdark of either Kingdom of Faerun. The question is, which one?
6. (How in the world did he manage to get to Athkatla? And what was he doing in the sewers? Was he part of the expedition in the sewers that <CHARNAME> unwittingly shmucks? If so, why did he go rogue?
7.(Very important) Aside from power-hunger, sadism, arrogance and overall psychosis, do Illithids, or does Esiriak in particular have any other kind of feeling in his emotional repertoire? This is of special interest to me, especially since I don't see why anyone would accept a companion with the emotional range of a broken plank.
8.(Extremely important): Why the heck did he desert? If it was a conflict of power, why didn't he usurp the position of another Illithid? If it was because he was weak, why didn't he commit suicide instead of seeking out a master, something usually out of the realm of possibility for an Illithid to even consider.
9. How was he able to swallow his pride and accept a master?
10. Did he really swallow his pride or is it just an act?
11. Did he really desert or is he part of an Illithid Conspiracy seeking to find out more of their enemies by assuming the mantle of servitude under a god child likely to find out the ins and outs of Toril's military and magical strength?
12. If the above is correct or something similar is going on, does it mean that the Illithid are having problems in their war against their enemy races?
13. Is he on the run?
14. Who is he running away from?
15. Does he have a handicap that made him a liability and his survival instinct is the only thing that keeps him going?
16. Will the master brain take control of him in the Underdark?
EDIT:
17. Does he eat anything besides brains?
18 Does he eat only the brains of sentient races or any kind of brains?
19. Is he allergic to the brain of specific races: which and why?
20. What does he find in <CHARNAME> that he sees as superior to himself?
I'll pause here:P
Sorry if I seem a bit picky but I want an Illithid
NPC to be as feasible as possible so that I may find a reason to take him along even though I always play good.
