Using overpowered familiars in BG1--your thoughts

Basically, my NG conjurer's familiar is making mincemeat of most anyone. It's a Pseudo Dragon. It regenerates health, it has 18 DEX and every round has the chance to knock the target unconscious...for 120 seconds.
Maybe there's something wrong with my game, but it's only taking one or two hits to get an enemy unconscious. And the familiar is almost never hit, so I just send in my familiar to knock everyone unconscious, then sweep up the rest with my fighters.
For example, I just killed Mulahey by sending up the familiar.
Pseudo dragon did (7) damage to Mulahey
Mulahey -- Unconscious
Or my battle against an Ankheg:
Pseudo dragon did (3) damage to Ankheg
Ankheg -- Unconscious
My initial through was to change the Pseudo dragon's attack in Shadow Keeper, but I can't figure out how to tone down the "knock target unconscious" part.
I like the little guy too much to get rid of him, so I'm wondering if I should just look at this as a major benefit of being a spellcaster.

Of course back up anything you're going to edit.

I imagine it is a little bit over-powered. Familiars didn't exist in BG1, so using them during the BG1 game could have rather unbalancing effects, like this you mention.
