HOMM3 rules.

May I ask, why? Because there are many different creatures? (Hmm.... Still my favourite town is Dungeon!) :D

You mean in general or in regards to the others in the series? It's tons better than the first two, in every possible way. I remember disliking the fourth installment for some reason (IIRC I didn't like the screens compared to the ones in #3, probably too 3D or something of the like), never checked out number 5. At some point I'll follow Grunker's advise and see how it is. Right now the next one on my list is IWD II.

If it's in general, the answer should be obvious if you played the game. I doubt there's a turn-based game of the like out there of similar quality (although I did like the Disciples 2 games).

The music is in the Top 2 of all the games I've played (and I wouldn't know for sure which one is the other).

As a side note, I always thought that the problem with the Dungeon is that the Red Dragon is preferable to his "upgraded" counterpart.

I see HoMM3 is get'n lots of love here. I have the complete version and it's certainly one of my top 5 faves, too. Others include the Baldur's Gate Saga, Tetris, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, and Diablo II.

Really, I like HoMM3 alot. It was no less than brilliant. When I played IV, my first thought was "why did they fix it when it wasn't broken?" IV was incredibly bad...

But the developer's seem to have listened. #5 is #3 with updated engine, and minor fixes. The balance between MIGHT and MAGIC, for example, is one of the few things altered. Almost all units now have a small misc ability. They created a great hybrid between the lack of interaction from a fighter-hero from 3 and the unit-hero from 4. Now the hero can attack, but he is not a selectable unit. The biggest change is probably in the skill tree, but go see for yourself.

As far as I'm concerned, V is better than III because it essentially is III, just updated :)

Because of balance I think. Then again Tower+EarthMagic combo isn't really balanced...

But the developer's seem to have listened

V was made by Nival, completely different Russian company. Not sure what exactly you were referring to though. I've been following the development process for some time and not sure if they did listen to community - much of flame was on forums that time. What they did in favor of fans for certain was the postponement of release after Ubisoft had been bombarded by angry beta-testers.

Still I'd love to play V nevertheless. I only need to find English version, update my computer and find enough time for that.

I'm afraid I have to say I like IV better than III or V, just because I can have my heroes actually fight, and have more than one in a party, so i can, rather sadly, play out my own little stories with them, usually involving mass political intrigue, involving several people being sent off alone to be eaten by dragons. So, HoMM 5 is a mix of III and IV. From III, hero is standing on the edge of the battlefield, and commands his\her armies. And, from IV, he\she can attack enemy creature, once per turn. Man, I remember like, when I was playing HoMM5, with Agrael, Godric easily had slain my archdevil. D

I was actually refering to the fact that they listened to the bad reviews of #4, and went in a completely different direction. Most reviewers at the time also pointed out that three was better in almost every sense, but some few nice notes were given, for example that the hero wasn't as passive as in #4, it was just badly handled. So what I mean is, whoever developed #5 must've thought "hey, everyobdy thinks #3 is a great game. So making #5 as spiritual succesor can't go wrong."

'Course, I can't back it up by facts (which is what my "seem" indicates), but it seems logical. V is very similar to III in almost every sense.

I can`t resist but throw in my completely pointless opinion here as well: Heroes 3 is the best in the series for me, whereas the 4th part was really really bad. :(

I kinda like 5, but it doesn`t have that spark the 3rd had... I can`t really put my cursor on it, I sometimes start playing, then get bored, quit and not play again for months; whereas I`ve been playing the 3rd one ever since it was released and I still haven`t gotten bored of it.

Longnights + alcohol/substances-with-somewhat-questionable-legality + HoMM3 hotseat with 1-2 buddies = great, great fun! I think one of the most compelling thing about the game is the fact that it has such a great multiplayer value, one that can be played on a single PC!

Yeah, we used to play HOMM3 with my boyfriend till the very morning... although without the alcohol and said substances :)

Aside from this, I would recommend Arcanum - great, great game! If you like steampunk, that is. Magic combined with technology á la Jules Verne, very good story and a clever system. Little party-NPC interaction though, but it doesn't subtract from the playability IMHO.

Elminster this, Elminster that. Give me 2000 years and a pointy hat and I will kick his arse.

Yeah, that's right... And it's usually very hard to make a break too - I often would sit to play for an hour, then to realize it was about 6 hours. That's why I never play it when I don't have a luxury of much free time.

If you want to alter reality, you must first escape from it.

Very hard to pick 5. Plus it's subject to change as I'll sometimes just be in the mood for a certain game etc. I may also cheat here and group a game series as one entry :P

1. Planescape: Torment

Awesome game. Great story and very immersive.

2. Baldur's Gate series

Shadows of Amn was the best part, followed by the first game and then Throne of Bhaal. One of the best RPGs and Jon Irenicus is one of the best villains I've ever come across.

3. StarCraft (and Brood War)

Great story and the best RTS I've played. It got the perfect balance because the sides were very different but balanced. This is something that an RTS game can fall victim to. Age of Empires II for instance, while a good game, just had the sides as too similar, separated only by a few differences. StarCraft's sides are very different but no single one is overpowered. They all have strengths and weaknesses and each side can be beaten or defeated by any other. Good stuff.

4. Fallout series

Mainly for the first two as I tend to think of them separately from Fallout 3. I liked Fallout 3 and I know it's part of the continuity but the different game engine and setting switch means I never really think of it together with 1 & 2, which are really great games.

5. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Perfect for what it was trying to be: crazy sandbox fun. The plot gets a bit silly in the middle but that's partly the fun of it all - it's over the top fun blended in with a down to earth story about the streets of Los Santos (Angeles). Robbing the biggest casino in Las Venturas (Vegas) never gets old :D

Now either I've forgotten something really obvious or will change my mind as soon as I post this  <_<

I have to split in two because in my mind RPGs I own are automatically the best of the games I have purchased.

RPGs:
Baldur's Gate Triology
Planescape: Torment
NWN2 + MotB
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Hordes of the Underdark

Honorable mentions: Arcanum, IWD1&2, Jade Empire, Morrowind. Haven't played Oblivion yet.
Somehow I don't like Fallout much, but I aknowledge its awesomess.

Other:
Diablo series (sorry, I don't think it's a real RPG)
Prince of Persia 3
Thief 3
Dark Messiah
Blood Omen 2

Honorable mentions: HOMM 5, Black & White 1/2 (I have a love-hate relationship with them)
