I read this:

there is a newer NI around (modified by devsin, and possibly smoketest) but I couldn't find that either

found here which got me searching and I found this. That eventually led me to a download on sourceforge which linked me to this:

NearInfinity-1.33b19-1 Released! 2006-07-19

and it said:

This is a major bump in version. I recieved indirectly from Jon Olav Hauglid his 1.33b19 version and patched it with my own minor changes. Get it while it's hot!

So, is this the newest Near Infinity available, is it a modified version of Jon Olav Hauglid's MOST RECENT beta source code, and is it stable-ish?

"Ok, I've just about had my FILL of riddle asking, quest assigning, insult throwing, pun hurling, hostage taking, iron mongering, smart-arsed fools, freaks, and felons that continually test my will, mettle, strength, intelligence, and most of all, patience! If you've got a straight answer ANYWHERE in that bent little head of yours, I want to hear it pretty damn quick or I'm going to take a large blunt object roughly the size of Elminster AND his hat, and stuff it lengthwise into a crevice of your being so seldom seen that even the denizens of the nine hells themselves wouldn't touch it with a twenty-foot rusty halberd! Have I MADE myself perfectly CLEAR?!"

I have the vague sense that Devsin's is more recent than that.

As for Stable-ish...do you mean stability, or smelling like a place where horses are kept? :P

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

Stability :D, although a response to either would answer my question  .

Damned if I remember. It's available either on G3 or PPG, judging by the color scheme I remember for the forum where I found the link. Alternatively I could send it to you.

I found this at PPG and it looks promising.

Although there is recent activity, the pinned download link is the same one I found before (from 2006). What version do you have Azkyroth?

Yes, Taimon's edit in that forum is the most recent, and should include anything else mentioned above. NI seems to be one of those stealth tools, to find the latest version of which you have to dig through some obscure forum post rather than just go to a proper webpage somewhere.

Thanks Miloch. (I actually think I read over it without realizing what it was  .) It really ought to be put somewhere more obvious.

This is all non-official and it comes with no support. I just shared my local changes (after cmorgans request).
Don't use if you want a stable/tested version.

As is true with devSin's changes, and any previous edits except maybe the original author's (and as he's not supporting it anymore, that's pretty much true with his too...).

Where is a latest version that is not a beta?

I believe that would be the original author's v1.32 from 2004 (his v1.32.1 on the same page is marked as a beta). Like cmorgan though, I've never had any issues with the newer versions.

I used Near Infinity v1.33 beta 18 for a couple of years and NEVER had ANY problems with it. It can be found here. It's quite a bit improved over the last non-beta. I can't exactly vouch for the modified beta 19 as I just got it, but it seems to be working great :) .

I love it when I get Can not find main class errors. I have Java installed.

Apparently this means your Java is hosed and needs to be reinstalled. Might as well get the latest version while you're at it.
