I'm a little curious regarding the last encounter with Tamoko, in the Undercity.
In my last BG game but one, I talked to her, told her not to throw her life away and said I wasn't going to kill her, and she said she had been a fool, and wandered off.
In this game (which I finished last night) I said more or less the same things but she insisted on fighting anyway and the only dialogue option I got was along the lines of, alright then, but I'll forgive your transgressions against me, or somesuch.

In both games I was playing a LN fighter with a heroic rep and a mainly good party (first game I had Minsc, Kivan, Coran, Branwen and Ajantis. Second game I had Imoen, Kivan, Coran, Yeslick and Ajantis). The only real differences were that the second game, I had some components of BG1 Unfinished Business installed:

~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #1 // The Mysterious Vial
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #2 // Additional Elminster Encounter
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #3 // Angelo Notices Shar-teel
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #4 // Finishable Kagain Caravan Quest
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #5 // Coran and the Wyverns
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #6 // Kivan and Tazok
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #7 // Branwen and Tranzig
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #9 // Appropriate Albert and Rufie Reward
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #10 // Place Entar Silvershield in His Home
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #11 // Scar and the Sashenstar's Daughter
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #12 // Quoningar, the Cleric
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #13 // Shilo Chen and the Ogre-Magi
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #14 // Edie, the Merchant League Applicant
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #15 // Flaming Fist Mercenary Reinforcements
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #17 // Creature Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #18 // Creature Name Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #19 // Minor Dialogue Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #20 // Audio Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #21 // Store, Tavern and Inn Fixes and Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #22 // Item Corrections and Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #23 // Area Corrections and Restorations
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #24 // Permanent Corpses
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #25 // Elven Charm and Sleep Racial Resistance
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #26 // The Original Saga Music Playlist Corrections
~BG1UB/SETUP-BG1UB.TP2~ #0 #27 // Sarevok's Diary Corrections

No other mods at all - no Tutu or BGT or anything like that.

The other difference was the first game I played as a female, and the second as a male.

Anyone know whether the option to talk her out of it is only available to females, or was it something to do with UB? (Generally I'd prefer not to kill her as I'm a softy!)

I cant remember if this is correct or not but Charisma might have something to do with it or some other high one maybe...

I know when I talked to her I was all nice and stuff throughout the game but she still attacked me...I only had like a score of 10 Charisma and such and I was a wizard slayer and LN like yourself and my int and wisdom were not that high either

Ah. Well the male character had a lot more wisdom, so it could be charisma (the female character had 14 or 15 I think - the second character had 12).

Charisma and Reputation are the only modifiers for reaction, and the character she's speaking to (since she initiates dialogue, this isn't necessarily Player1) needs to have a pretty high reaction to avoid the fight.

I don't believe we touched Tamoko's dialogue for any reason in BGUB (there are certainly no restorations that involve her).

I think it may be the sequence of dialogue options you actually take. In the first dialogue option you get from her, you can talk her out of it then, or try talk her out of it a bit later after you talked a bit.

The first time I talked to Tamoko, I didn't try to talk her out of it right away. In the end, she attacked me. I loaded a save before meeting her (because I got killed...), but this time I tried talking her out of it right away which resulted in her walking away. Since the two reactions came from the same game, maybe it's the sequence of dialogues.

By the way, I was a male fighter with CHR 18.

You may get further insight from this Wikipedia article about Tamoko.

I'm no an expert, but to quote from the article: "By steadily refusing to kill her just because she is in their way, the player can show her they are different from Sarevok and thus convince her that his own attitude is more a matter of personal choice than she had realized. In this case, she will simply leave without a fight."
I did battle with monsters, and they became me, and when I gazed into the abyss, the abyss looked away shyly.
See, it helps not to believe all the stuff that philosophers spout.

Yes, I got her "in the way" line but only had one response to it, which ended with a fight. So perhaps charisma is needed (since I had 20 rep in both instances).

Yeah I also had 20 rep when I faced her but like I said only a 10 in Charisma

I only finished BG1 once and I tried to talk her out of attacking. I reloaded several times to try different options, but she always attacked. I know the reputation was good, but my characters do generally lack charisma. Yes, they're ugly, rough-voiced cretins who wield overly-large swords with brutal effectiveness -- but that's all they can do.

Sure I read someplace that not only does rep/charisma play a role but wisdom as well - after all, I think you are argueing logic with her and trying to prove that her chosen path in life is wrong. That's gotta take some will power

Can't remember where I read this though.

It's just reaction that's checked (which is determined by rep and cha), as deGuest says. Though you also have to pick the correct dialogue paths too, of course.

I managed to convince her not to go berserk on my party, and my character is a True Neutral Fighter/Mage with a exceptionnally high charisma score of 8. So really, charisma has nothing to do with it. Perhaps your dialogue choises in the conversation you have with Tamako when she asks you not to kill sarevok have something to do with it as well?

Or mabye she was talking to Imoen...

Yes, you have to choose certain replies. When you get to the final dialogue "You must! I stand blah blah," you need a reaction higher than 7 to even try to convince her not to fight. If your reaction is 8-14, you will fail (she attacks anyway); if your reaction is greater than 14 (15-20), you can convince her to walk away.

Reputation and Charisma both provide modifications to the reaction total, so your sum will be the reaction roll (just 10) + reputation mod + charisma mod. Also, Charisma influences reaction far more than high reputation (Reputation 20 gives a bonus of +4 to reaction; Charisma 18 gives a +5 bonus to reaction, to a maximum +14 for Charisma 25). In the opposite direction, the penalties accrue very quickly for reputation -- -20 for a reputation of 1, and just -8 for Charisma 3.

With Charisma 8, you wouldn't be able to convince her to leave, even with a 20 reputation (Reaction 10 - 1 + 4 = 13). She may have initiated dialogue with another party member (she'll just target the closest one she can see), or you may have had charisma-enhancing items equipped.
