The Sauroids, or Sarrukh, a reptile race that lived and dominated the continent of Faerūn long before humans. They themselves created nagas, lizardmen, in the end as their power weakened, the resourceful yuan-ti's rose up to claim their power and lands.

The Sarrukh are the only Creator Race I know of, but there are hints that humans were also a Creator Race, as the Sarrukh created the naga "by breeding men with snakes, and lizardmen through a similar process".

What intelligent races are being given short descriptions by a harried DM below.

A. They're humanoid, but they're a little taller and heavily built and they're heads are like the heads of a hippopotamus.

B. They're human sized but like Mantises, with six limbs. They walk on the back pair and have four available for weapons or tools.

C. Humanoids with the fur and heads of tigers (or other big cats).

D. Walking mushrooms that communicate through their spores.

E. Eight foot tall elephantine humanoids. They walk on two legs, have large and clumsy arms, but for fine manipulation they have two trunks which end with fingers.

Answers:

The Sarrukh, a lizard-like race that created several servant races including the Yuan-Ti. One of their organisations, the Ba-etith, created the Golden Scales of the World Serpent, later known as the Nether Scrolls.
The Batrachi, an amphibious frog-like humanoid race that also created a variety of servant races. Some scholars believe they are ancestors of the Slaadi, while others claim that after the decline of their civilisation they became races like the Bullywugs.
The Aearee, a race of avian humanoids that created various other races. After the arrival of the dragons they were hunted into near extinction, and the survivors are said to have fled into the West.
The Fey, or sylvans. They ruled Faerie then and rule it still.
Humans. Although some are immigrants from other worlds, primitive human tribes were contemporaries of the other creator races.

Just in time - internet failed on me

A. They're humanoid, but they're a little taller and heavily built and they're heads are like the heads of a hippopotamus.
- Giff (good luck that I still know this of AD&D ;))

B. They're human sized but like Mantises, with six limbs. They walk on the back pair and have four available for weapons or tools.
- Thri-keen (originally from the campaign setting "Dark Sun")

C. Humanoids with the fur and heads of tigers (or other big cats).
- As Kellen said, this is too little info to distinguish Catfolk or Rakshasa, though the later one does have the distinguished feature of having inverted hands which Bluenose either found to easy a clue, or did not mention as he means catfolk

D. Walking mushrooms that communicate through their spores.
- Myconids (from the Underdark)

E. Eight foot tall elephantine humanoids. They walk on two legs, have large and clumsy arms, but for fine manipulation they have two trunks which end with fingers.
- AD&D Loxo (in 3.5 their hands can manipulate objects, but still have two trunks with three fingers)

Still modding the Mod for the Wicked... It is a big project you know... And I got sidetracked (several times) a bit... sorry.

The gnomes tell several stories about how they came to be. In one of them, Garl Glittergold, while exploring, found a cavern that was enormously rich in veins of ore and gemstones. Taking some of the gems, he polished them and then breathed on them. The gems opened out, revealing the first gnomes. After releasing all the gnomes, Garl told them a joke, before they left in separate groups according to their sub-races.

There were three sorts of gems involved, for the three gnome sub-races. What sort of gem is associated with which sub-race?

Rock Gnome

Forest Gnome

Deep Gnome (Svirfneblin)

Rock Gnome - diamonds

Forest Gnome - emeralds

Deep Gnome (Svirfneblin) - rubies

This and more legends on Gnomes are to be found here.
I required the net, as I knew another myth in which The Sparkling Wit (= Garl Glittergold) found the Gnomes in a cave, which he told a joke and than lead outside, hence their name: The Forgotten Folk. A version that is not even related on the site above, but of course I can not refind <_<
Even more Gnome stuff as I know Scipio loves this

Sometimes races get created by outside factors. In some cases, this is due to something in their environment while in others it's a result of magical experimentation or cross-breeding. The following races are all modified in some way, but what from originally, and what changed them?

Dekanter goblins

Yuan-ti

Spriggans

Duergar

Dekanter goblins Created by an Alhoon called the Beast Lord in the mines of Dekanter in the Anauroch. Created from Goblins

Yuan-ti Created by the sarrukh by magically breeding humans with snakes. This way they also created naga, and through a similar process, lizardmen

Spriggans Spriggans were created from gnomes so far as I can see. How... I do not know. Alternatively it's been speculated that they are the ghosts of old giants. Not sure.

Duergar Created by centuries of cruel and unusual experimentation by Illithid upon Shield Dwarves

Dekanter goblins:
Created from: Goblins
Creator(s): an Alhoon (an illithid lich) in the mines of Dekanter in the Anauroch

Yuan-ti:
Created from: Humans and Snakes
Creator(s): Sarrukh (creator race)

Spriggans:
Created from: Gnomes
Creator(s): Evil fey

Duergar:
Created from: Dwarves
Creator(s): Illithid (the race for alterations, besides Aboleth, within the Underdark)

The Duergar is a guess/gamble as I thought them naturally occuring due to being to deep in the Underdark. After all, how deeper races go, the less friendly they tend to get - see also Deep Gnomes. Took Illithid for the reason I put behind it in ()'s

Humans come in a large variety of cultural and ethnic groups. Some are widespead and well known, such as Calishites (the vast majority of the population in Calimshan, and common in neighbouring areas), Illuskans (most of the region north of Waterdeep, and some of the islands). Some aren't so well known. Where might you find the following human groups?

Bedine

Ffolk

Gur

Turami

Ulutiun

Answers:
Dekanter goblins. For many years the Dekanter mines were Netheril's major source of metal. After they played out, dangerous or failed magical experiments were stored there. After the fall of Netheril, a goblin tribe started to live there. Centuries of living in the magical equivalent of a toxic waste dump, under the supervision of a curious Alhoon, led to extensive mutation among the goblins.

Yuan-ti. The Sarrukh conducted extensive experiments on humans/reptile hybrids. The yuan-ti are one of the results, and probably the most successful.

Spriggans. The spriggans are a result of magical alteration to gnomes. Some of this was carried out by Unseelie Court Fey, but in the Realms the process was duplicated by the Netherese and applied to their gnome slave population.

Duergar. Clan Duergar was one of the major clans of the dwarf kingdom of Shanatar. During a major war with the Illithid, they were cut off from the rest of the dwarf population and enslaved. Illithid experiments altered them enough to make them into a separate sub-race of dwarves. When they regained their freedom, they retained a hatred both for the Illithids who enslved them and the other dwarves who failed to aid them.
