I am a complete noob to BG mods. Nevertheless I am going to attempt a Big World Project install for several reasons: (1) I have successfully installed many complicated mods for other games. For example FCOM for Oblivion; (2) Eventually I will want to play with the largest BG world possible; and (3) I don't want to start a new BG game and after playing for many hours, regret that I didn't install certain mods.

So what happens if I screw up the install but don't discover this until 100+ hours of gameplay? Or perhaps i didnt screw anything up, but there is a bug that ruins the game?

Can I reinstall BG with a different set of mods and still use my old gamesave? Is there a way to import saves?

To number one: well, you can try to report it, so that someone might help you out with the problem (happens around) and a precaution might be given to others.

To number two: mostly not, as it causes all sorts of freakishness. You CAN add mods along the way with the old game, but a fresh new install with different mods will likely be incompatible.

Nothing quite dramatic, just an end of a world.

Well, you can try to jump around the bugs, and generally you can add or remove the quest and NPC mods and item mods(although wouldn't recommend uninstalling the "+6 two handed sword mod" and expecting it to still be there in your inventory as you load the game without a crash-to-windows). And don't expect to remove certain rule, tweak or worls map mods on the fly, cause the savegames won't adjust to them. Now the jumping around the bugs can be hazzardius itself, especially if you don't know where the bug comes from or what it does... and, don't expect to be able to solve all the problems the Big World Project might have, without cheating in the GLOBAL's etc.

Someone (probably Azazello or Chevalier) once likened Mega modding as a game in itself - a big, giant puzzle with too many pieces that you have to fit together, then ignore the fact that there are still pieces left over (and one or two of them are required but they just don't fit any more).

If running into some oddities bothers you, then the safest thing to do is build smaller, targeted installs, and then play through; change out the mods, and play through again with a new set.

As long as you are having fun, no worries - completing and beating the game is really not the target anyways (many folks never bother with ToB at all). Having fun *playing* the game and seeing the stories is :)

I've read through the Big World thread and its still not clear to me how buggy it is in its current state. Just how risky is it? Perhaps I should start out with the Big Picture mod instead. Or is that just as likely to give me problems?

The Big Picture has a list of mods it is compatible with, same with BGT. Take a look at those compatability lists and see if anything sounds interesting. Make a list of what sounds interesting. Then check to see if those mods are compatible with eachother. No matter what you do, you are going to be playing a game that has some errors in it. If you follow the compatibilty lists, nothing should be too game breaking. If you pick up DLTCEP or NI and the initiative you can fix the problems you come across. It's not usually too difficult. cmorgan brought up valid points. You'll be ok as long as you're having fun.

I think that was pro5.

I am a complete noob to BG mods.

Please DON'T install so many mods together ... u will find issues for sure and u need to be SKILLED and BG trained to face and resolve them.

My suggestion: try with only some mods (BGT+some minor) and the next games u may add something more,

just my 2 cents,

Tired of the same boring spawned creatures u face in BG? Try BGSpawn
