Hi, I've just installed winxp sp2 on a new hard drive and tried to install my 5 disc BG1 series (with the recommended install). I put the 1st cd in and it installs to about 63%, then acts like the game is completely installed, and doesn't ask for the rest of the cds. It plays the demo movie and I can actually create a character and start the game.

Went to Bioware forums and saw that people have problems with xp installs, but nothing like this. Anyone know how to get this working?

By the way I've been playing a mega mod with win98 for years and never had a problem till I upgraded to winxp.

If I remember correctly (installed it yesterday night), the recommended install is not full, and will ask to insert the other CDs when needed. You should be ok.
I made a full install, and it was around 70% (more or less, I was kinda sleepy) asked again the CD 1 and after 2-3 seconds it finished the installation without showing 100% in the progress bar. It has always been this way.

On the other hand, I had a problem launching the setup.exe. It started 3 hours after I pressed the INSTALL button on the autorun screen :o

It could, conceivably, also be antivirus interference here too. I've done a full install of BG1 on XP several times without problems (though granted, I use the 3-CD Original Saga, not the 5-CD version).

Thanks for the replies.

I tried compact and full install - no luck.

I went to the Bioware site and followed 3 or 4 different methods - no luck.

Tried running under windows compatibility mode for win95 and win 98 - no luck.

Tried updating installshield (which I think may be the culprit) with the exe and ikernel - no luck.

Tried setting desktop to 16 bit, and sound acceleration off - no luck.

Each time (took 4 hours) it would install up to 83% and launch the demo movie. Aaaggh!

Either something is whacked with the installer or I'm extremely unlucky and noone else has this problem. Oh, and I shut off the firewall, virus scan and internet access while trying all these methods. Looks like BGT won't be happening anytime soon...

Sounds like a bad CD then. Even if it's new and has no visible scratches, it can be defective sometimes. If it does though, you might try cleaning or descratching it. The way to tell for sure is to try installing it on a different PC.

Hmm, just checked the readme about custom vs recommended install. Just wondering since its been years since I installed it on my old win98 - which one is better?

Also, does it need to ask for more cds (I have the 5 disc plus Totsc). I was used to BG2 asking for disc 2, disc 3 etc. to finish the install. Is the installation actually finished off the 1st CD?

Miloch how big was your full install, I think mine finished at 518mb if that sounds right. (I can't find the manual)

Custom/full is definitely better than recommended (especially if you're going to use Tutu or BGT).

Also, does it need to ask for more cds (I have the 5 disc plus Totsc). I was used to BG2 asking for disc 2, disc 3 etc. to finish the install. Is the installation actually finished off the 1st CD?

You certainly should be prompted for all the CDs, even for a minimal install I think.

No idea - I'm working on a bunch of BG1 mods, so it's several GB now. But even originally it was probably at least 1 GB.

That's the recommended size(as it's said in the installation prompts), but...

Is the installation actually finished off the 1st CD?

Yes, to the first one, and no to the second one as with minimal installation, the process doesn't copy anything from the 3-5CD's so they aren't 'needed', but in truth if you want to mod the game, you need the full install/custom with all the content!

But even originally it was probably at least 1 GB.

2-3Gb sound better, as the game needs all the info that's in the 1-5CD's. + the about 0.7Gb for BGTotSC + the cache 0.3Gb (+ the mods)

I've installed the 5-cd (and TotSC) on WinXp with Sp2 many times with no problems. It argues in the beginning about available disk space but once past that it goes fine.

Isn't there a manual full install guide around somewhere?

Great, it finally worked with a custom install (with every box checked). Thats what I was remembering from my last install, when it asked for all the cds.
1)When it did a minimum install=400+mb (just cd 1)
2)recommended install=518mb (just cd 1)
3)custom install=2.5 gig+ (asked for all 5 cds)

You guys were correct, I was just bugging out because there was a custom install last time and I didn't remember. <_<

Thanks again.

By the way for BGT install, the directions say put BG2 in another directory. BG1 is in C/programfiles/Black Isle and BG2 is C/programfiles/Black Isle. Is that ok, or should it be in another folder besides Black Isle.

They need to be in seperate directory, as you need to install the BGTmod and if the folders are same already, it can't identefy which is which, and neither game works, and thus BGTmod installation process doesn't work either, so everything has to be reinstalled.

But if they have separate installations for {whatever}/BG1 and {whatever}/BG2 . (The {whatever}/ can be the same if wanted). Then you cut/paste the unpacked BGT-WeiDU(1.05b).zip to the {whatever}/BG2 and follow the instructions given in the ReadMe inside the BGT folder, yes the one that's has it's own logo.
