Tolknaz's virtual machine suggestion back on page 4 seems to be working flawlessly for me. In PS:T, the nvidia fix was running great until I got to the first spell caster (in the mausoleum), at which point ice knife caused horrible slowdown. Both with WSM and w/o if eddy is still reading. As everyone else has said, using software transparency solves the problems but the game is then unbearably slow. Dropping hardware acceleration down several notches helps, but causes pointer trails.

As far as I can tell, PS:T in the virtual machine runs at full speed and without any problems. A bit of an absurd solution, but if it works...
I have a Core 2 Duo @2.66 GHz and a 8800 GT for what it's worth.

Vista 32bit here, NVidia Geforce 8600m GT (Mobile version, on my lappy), using Forceware Drivers 185.85 (the ones for normal cards, not the mobile version) i was able to fix the flickering and mouse trail problem.

In my NVidia Control Panel, i disabled Triple Buffering and Vertical Sync. Make sure also to disable AA for BG at least, as it will cause the visible framing to appear.
Playing BG TBP with Widescreen mod (1440x900 fullscreen). Looks gorgeous.

I'm having a problem that I haven't seen discussed yet. I'm running BG1 from the 4-pack with EasyTutu. I do have a bit of the black square problem despite using the settings at the beginning of this thread, but it's nothing I can't live with.

The bigger problem is with the area map. Even if I've explored the entire map I'm on, large sections of it appear as black (unexplored) when I call it up. I can drag the green zoom box around like an eraser, "clearing" the inappropriate black sections away and revealing the map. However, if I do this too much, more black areas will reappear away from the zoom box. Also, if I go back to gameplay and then reenter the area map, all of the excess black is back.

This doesn't make the game unplayable, but it's a bit annoying.

I'm running in Vista with an 8800GT card (I'm not at home, so I can't look up the exact driver version, but it's from about 1-2 months ago.)

I was having significant problems playing BG1 on an 8800GTS (512MB version) game was unplayable, black boxes everywhere and rediculus fps. Now no problems at all so thought i'd post the process i took.

Full install all the games like Tutu says and get latest patches for ToSC and ToB. install EasyTutu.

My config settings are as followed:
Hardware:
Use 3D Acceleration [Enabled]
Automated Speed Adjustment [Enabled]
All Bars to Maximum

Graphics>3D Options:
3D animations [Enabled]
use 3d accleeration [Enabled]
Driver : Default OpenGL Driver
32 Bit Textures [Enabled]
Disable Vertex Padding [Disabled]

For me these settings are giving outstanding quality with no display faults and in up to 1024x768 excelent FPS.

I am currently using a very old monitor which is dying and will no longer support 1280x980 correctly for some reason although it should also run fine with these settings on that resolution

I am not saying that these settings will work with anyone else just that they work fine with my card, from what i have read these settings wll not work with older cards in the 8000 series but feel free to try.

Thanks for that post!
All problems solved.

For people with NVIDIA 8x00 cards playing BGT:
I'd strongly reccomend using the Widescreen mod as it can set any resolution you want and some of them in windowed mode. There is just one problem I'll mention below. It seems that you get very low FPS even with those-so-mighty cards when you play in software rendered modes, so here is how to make vest use of both your card and WS mod:

First thing to do is to go in BGConfig and enable 3D in the last tab (makes the game run in 32-bit mode, so forget about software bliting mentioned above). Then enable 3D Animations and disable vertex padding below. Now run the test - if those color squares look ok then you are set. If you got heavy flickering, then do this:
- go to www.guru3D.com and download Riva Tuner from their download section. Hand downs this is the best NVIDIA tweak utility so far so please install it.
- after you run it for first time go to the software options (Main screen > Customize which is under Driver Settings > Open GL tab) and under VSync set the option to always off.
- you're set - run the BGConfig again and see if the squares flicker. If everything is good, hit apply and OK
- open baldur.ini (it is in the same BGII install folder as BGConfig) with Notepad or similar program and leave it opened for now

Now if you install the Widescreen mode, which is not good only for those of you with WS monitors but also for standard 5:4 (such as 17 and 19 inch TFTs) and set some resolution with it (it is rather self explanatory and has help, saves me some writing) everything that BGConfig wrote in baldur.ini. Now open baldur.ini again (do not close the old one) and see where there are diferences. In my config I set those in the newly opened baldur.ini

16Bit Textures=0
Resolution=1280BitsPerPixel=32
3D Acceleration=1
Disable Vertex Padding=1

Hit Ctrl+S (Save) and close the other Notepad window.

Run the game and hail whomever wrote that WS mod as it looks stunningly beautiful on Hi-Res screen w/o glitches.

Hope that helps and please exuse my spelling, English is very far from being my native language.

Did someone try the spells _without_ the widescreen mod?
Does anyone have a save game for me so that I can try it out?

Can't somebody provide Eddy with a save so we can have this problem fixed? :crying: (Unfortunately I've never completed PS:T and am only playing it for the first time, now.)

Just to mention, your patch is absolutely magic. I wish good-looking women repaid you with sexual favors. It fixed my BG1 game, on a GeForce 8500GT. Thanks!

On the PS:T "walking backwards" thing:

1. Update your video drivers
2. If that doesn't work, turn software mirroring on in Options (within the game).

Qwinn

Hey I had the same problem. I turned on the software mirroring and it worked. However, after that the game froze each time I tried to save. Any idea why?

Hey
Maybe im too late but found a solution to the problem of black lines/squares on screen in Baldur's Gate 2: Just slide bar for 3D-settings in Nvidia Configuration-panel to "Performance" and not Quality:

When I use Eddy's fix with BG1:TotSC in Windows 7 RC1, I get weird artifacts/bugs with the fog of war textures. It does seem to fix the pause button animation though.

The ACT fix, on the other hand, seems to work fine so I'll stick with that for now.

UPDATE: Tried Eddy's nvidia_ddraw_fix on Planescape: Torment as well, and realized that what's happening is that there's a mirrored sprite issue with both character sprites and fog of war sprites. In PS:T I was able to activate software mirror blt.

In BG1, the character sprites mirrored fine but not the fog of war sprites, and software mirroring had no effect. Reducing color depth from 32 to 16 bit seemed to make software mirroring work though.

Also, under Windows 7 RC1 x64 I had to disable UAC to install the PS:T v1.1 patch because otherwise the InstallShield installer (setup.exe) freezes. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, even though it probably affects Vista x64 users as well.

Hey ive got a really weird problem, ive got bg2-soa and tob with latest patch installed.

What happens is when i load the game it runs fine, but when i click into single player and new game or load game it freezes up. Ive fixed that by setting the affinity in task manager to run on both processors which stoped the freezing, but the fps isnt running at the default 30, its running at half that.

Now heres where it gets weird, by holding down the Alt key while i play it speeds up the game to the normal frame rates. ud think its a solution but its not coz i have to click sumwhere first then hold ALT...let go then click sumthing again etc which is really stupid. Ive tried going into the BGconfig to set the FPS at 60 thinking it would make the game run at 30 since its running at half speed. Didnt work it still was at 15 FPS and when holding ALT down, speed it up to 60 FPS.

Ive got
intel®Core™2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80 GHZ 1.80 GHZ
2GB Ram Windows Vista 32-bit
Nividia GeForce 8500 GT 256mb dedicated ( Latest drivers )

Ive tried all the graphics settings mentioned in all the previous posts, set up BG2s own profile in nividia contorl panel with every combination, tryed XP service pack 2 compadibility, turning off ambient sound: and all sound, ive taken off the windows vista aero crap to free up some processing power, power management in control panel for high performance ( vista crap ), went into msconfig to make the computer know ti has 2 processors and run at max ram: also took off all unnessecary start ups and services, swearing and bribing it to work and nothing.

I just cant handle playing it at half speed or normal speed by holding ALT down after every action then letting it go to perform another action then holding it down again until that action is finished crap. If anyone knows how to fixed this i will name my first born after you, build a shrine and worship u every morning.

Found solution, i added the game path to windows defender so it wouldnt scan the files while i play ( which was the reason it was slow ). I did the same thing with my antivirus but never even thought of windows defender. Guess ill be worshiping myself now suckerz.

for BG1 ( i have expansion instaled but no Tutu) there is easy in game solutions to get rid of any black tiles that worked for me

set color depth to 16 and enable the 3rd BLT option

if u have any lag problems afterwards enable second BLT option

I just hit the exact same problem, first time player and it's a bit of a game killer for me so I'm pretty depressed right now, dropping hardware acceleration down gets you mouse trails and extreme lack of vsync (bad tearing), it's horrible to look at.

Virtualbox worked but there a definite sluggish, slightly juddery feel about it, it just doesn't respond as nicely as running in XP, what a horrible choice to make, mouse trails and vsync tearing or sluggish performance :(
