Worked like a charm thank you for your support. I will start some game play tomorrow on my bard *grin* as for checking out the trilogy mod or tutu ill have to try that out sometime and look into some good mods to play threads on here or tppg. Now just curious this works for iwd series to right? yes it does right? its stated at the beginning of this thread if I remember correctly I like to ask anyway to clarify that.

Well, if you don't have the IwD1 'addition pack' called 'Hearth of Winter', then yes... but if you have the Hearth of Winter, I advice that you to install the latest patch that doubles as the addition-addition pack called 'Tales of the Loremaster'(&v1.42 patch), link from where it can learn more and download it; and that shouldn't have the black boxes problem, just that you should set the Sprite Mirroring on.

By the way, the bard is the worst class to start in BG1... as it has no spells, low hitpoints, really low thac0, no hide, no disarm trap, no lock picking...
It does get a little better but not much at higher levels when you can cast spells but still you'll be restricted in armor there as you cannot wear them if you wish to cast the spells.

Ya i have gotten to where im fighting these and skeletons keep summoning until you kill the priest of Ilmater I gotta go back and look what chapter I am on I just know I have played hours of icewind dale gameplay with the black box and its annoying. Have you played with a bard? A mage is weak to but gets more spells faster I guess. I think I could make use of pick pocket. But I don't want to play as a fighter either. Hmm not sure if I should make a multi class thinking of something interesting or fun to play as. I know fighters are the easiest to play with and you always need healers blessers spell casters.

I've got a problem with BG2; if I have both DirectX's hardware acceleration and BG2's hardware acceleration on or off, the fog of war is jagged, but renders incorrectly if I go into a menu and exit. Having BG2's HA on and DirectX's HA off and vice verca will cause the screen to flicker like crazy.

What do I do?

I have a problem with the installation of the fix. When I run it it says
installing [fix nvidia graphical glitches]
copying ad patching 1 file...
copying 1 file...
ERROR: error loading [nvidia_fix/nvddf.dll]
Am I doing something wrong?

Hey there, having some issues with Icewind Dale 2 - I'm hoping someone here can help.

My problems in essence are:
I'm getting a consistent graphical glitch in relation to shadows/fog of war (image).
Game overall is very slow with stuttering in movement.
Moving with the keyboard is unresponsive, choppy and extremely slow.

Also, if anyone knows a way to lock the mouse into the window of IWD2, so I can run it in windowed mode and still be able to scroll the screen, I'd be much obliged.

I've tried:
Installing the proposed nvidia_fix.
Manually setting 3D Acceleration=1 and Disable Vertex Padding=1 in icewind2.ini
To set VSync as "Always Off" in RivaTuner.

I've got a GeForce 8800 GTX card, running under Windows 7.
I'd be extremely grateful for any possible suggestions.

Did you install the nvidia_fix from the first post ? Of course you have to know how to avoid the Windows 7's common problems.
If that doesn't cover everything... The fog of war bug should be fixed if you start the Config.exe in the game folder and go to Graphics and in the Game options there's "Sprite Mirroring", so enable or disable it.

Well no, it seems to be a failure at the file used to install the fix... you of course have to have extracted the files correctly to the game folder.

You really should only need to use the games own configuration program to deal with the problems in BG2, so read the first post...

Done and done. I uninstalled IWD2, did all the "Windows 7's common problems" fixes (and restarted), reinstalled IWD2, patched to the last patch, installed the nvidia_fix (like I did the first time) - didn't solve the issue(s). Sprite Mirroring did not fix the "boxed" fog-of-war, either.

I has a sad. :(

Start the Config.exe in the game directory, select the "Graphics" tab, and use the Windows "Snipping Tool" to take a picture of it(saved as a .jpg), go here and upload the picture, and then post the link to the picture in a post...

I hope a .png is alright, when I saved it I had completely forgotten you said .jpg: My IWD2 Graphics tab.

I have:
Disabled (and re-enabled) Dithering.
Enabled (and disabled) Sprite Mirroring.
Disabled (and re-enabled) Translucent Spell Effects.
Disabled (and re-enabled) Transparent Shadows.
Switched to 16-bit 2D Color Depth, with and without all BLT modes enabled.
Switched back to 32-bit 2D Color Depth.

None which seemed to have any effect on the choppy performance, the poor scrolling, or the graphic fog-of-war glitches.

Also, here's my icewind2.ini on pastebin: icewind2.ini Pastebin

Doesn't matter, the .jpg is smaller and usually easier to upload.

Also, here's my icewind2.ini

Hmm, don't know why the fog of war doesn't like what you have... but the game play might lag because these settings:

Maximum Frame Rate=45
...
Keyboard Scroll Speed=72
...
Environmental Audio=1

Switch them to:

Maximum Frame Rate=30
...
Keyboard Scroll Speed=36
...
Environmental Audio=0

And see if it corrects the speed some what...

Maximum Frame Rate=30
...
Keyboard Scroll Speed=36
...
Environmental Audio=0

Unfortunately, those changes made no difference. However, I did manage almost remove all choppyness of the game itself and activating "Backwards Compatible 3D=1" and "3d Acceleration=1" also increased smoothness, including slow or unresponsive menu buttons. However, the issue of slow and unresponsive Keyboard Scroll Speed remained, as did the jagged fog of war.

Then it occurred to me. Only 3 out of four directions of the fog was actually 'wrong'. Looking at the sprites for the fog, it appears as if it simply did not rotate pieces properly. It loaded the correct sprites, but it seems unable to tell if they're supposed to be flipped horizontally, diagonally, etc. This made me look at the sprites of the characters in-game.

Sure enough, they act as if Sprite Mirroring is in effect, even though it clearly shouldn't be. If a character is facing west, his shield is pointing down. If a character is facing east, his shield is still pointing down. Same goes for all others. The game simply seems unable (or unwilling) to load and rotate sprites like it's supposed to.

I found a suggestion to enable 16-bit color depth and Software Mirror BLT together, but for some reason, I cannot set 16-bit Color Depth in the game (and for obvious reasons, I'd be loathe to do so). Even when I set it to 16-bit in the icewind2.ini or in the Config program, it defaults to 32-bit when I run the game.

Sorry for triple-posting, but I just wanted to say that the Compatability Manager fix mentioned on page 4, forcing DirectDraw, seems to have solved the issue. Keyboard scrolling is still jerky and unresponsive, though, so I suppose I'm going to -have- to run it in fullscreen, but at least it seems playable now. :)

It didn't work for me on Torment. I did what it said and it seemed to basically just get me the same result as if I lowered my hardware acceleration, but without me having to do so. Which is to say the mouse cursor leaving trails in menus and spells seeming to be drawn fine but at least things like magic missile seemed to give a big bright, yellowish flash that consumes the screen for about a quarter of a second every time you cast the spell.

Maybe the flash this is suppose to happen, I don't really know.

I heard some talk about using virtual pc, and I tried that but it seemed to want you to physically have the original OS you wish to be virtualized, which is kind of annoying, I did by chance happen to find an old proper disc of windows 98 but it wants the d key and I have no idea what happened to that

You might have to play the game for it to be there, start the game with the .exe, start a new game and after the talk with the skull exit the game, and the .ini file will be in the game directory.

And if it's still not there because your OS, do the usual thing in regards of the latest Windows OS'es and IE games...

...

Darn... so the help here made the difference.

Ok so, I'm having problem with the mouse leaving traces in PST. I have the GoG version and I installed all the fixes for it, but it's still there. I'm using compatibility administrator to force emulating Ddraw. I have also tried the other fixes such as D3D, but that doesn't let me go full screen, and kinda ruins the immersion for me. I also used Shift Window to try and fix it, but it would only resize my window, and if I chose to go full screen, I either have the start menu appearing on the bottom, so it covers my interface, or if I use windowed mode I sometimes get graphical glitches, such as 1px lines going through the whole window. Is there any other option to fix this, because I really want to play it in full screen without the mouse glitching?

Well.... LOL it was there all the time just under a diferent name. it just reads "Torment" and out to the side it has a description "Configuration settings"...........

Now I have a couple more questions.....

1) Should I install the fixpack, tweek mod,and unfinished Buisness before The Biggs's Widescreen mod?

2 I also have a question about installing the Widescreen mod..... During the instalation it asks for the x and y resolution twice ..... I have a 24 inch widescreen monitor and I want to play the game in 1920x1200 rez ..... Should i enter 1920x1200 both times or should the lowest rez for the game be entered first and then !920x1200 or vise a versa???

thanks as always for your help!!!

1) The FAQ for the general install order is here, I would... that's talked here, put the Widescreen mod second to last, just before the GUI mod, but you do what you like.
2) Do as you like, but I prefer the max resolution, other don't, what you probably want to do is enter the game resolution you wish to use in the first question, and then put the larger numbers to the second question, should you desire such in your saves, so they can be reconfigured to use the larger resolution. So essencially if you wish to have 1920x1200 everywhere, you put 1920 and 1200 to both times.
