I'm no programmer and I haven't got the slightest idea what the heck to do with it. Hope you can help. Tnx.

I'm having this exact same problem with the directdraw fix - what am I doing wrong?

problem with the directdraw fix

Solution was to copy the files from CD's 2-4 into the cache folder.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the people who have contributed to this thread. I had problems with IWD2 and I couldn't find ANY solution over the internet. Maybe except for the disabling hardware acceleration thing, which gave unplayable choppy quality.
For me, Dazzle's fix worked like a charm. THANKS! I get normal speed, every graphics effect works and I get no anomalies whatsoever!
The fixing utility attached to the first post made the anomalies go away as well, but again: the game ran very slowly. With Compatibility Administrator everything's fine - just like it used to be on my old desktop PC :)
My specs: Windows Vista Business 64-bit SP2, GeForce GT 130M and Icewind Dale II v. 2.01.

I also am greatly disappointed there's been no mention of ati cards. I haven't been having black boxes or visual glitches, but I had extreme slow-downs (to like 5fps or so) on a core i7/radeon 4850 box. Luckily, what someone mentioned above did help me. Disabling directdraw in dxdiag got rid of the slowdown completely. The cursor flickering was a lot more mild than I expected from everyone's descriptions, and while I saw screen tearing on panning, it was also mild.

Maybe it's because the processor is so much more powerful, that it can render up to speed without help from the gpu? In any case, that, or moving hardware acceleration down four pegs (three didn't work) both solve the problem. I recommend the hardware acceleration method though, as it caused less cursor flickering.

Still, if that patch is so simple as to just be wrapping something around an nVidia DLL... could someone make one for Ati cards?

Also, has anyone experienced slowdowns of the exact same kind as this playing fallout 2? I haven't tried a lot of older games yet, but IWD2 and Fallout 2 both were almost unplayable for me before the fix.

And I'm not using a widescreen mod.

I have a problem with the 3 CD version of BG1+TotSC. It seems that graphical effects from spells/potions etc. cause the game to get really slow/laggy/sluggish. Otherwise it is working fine but this is really getting annoying now in the latter part of the game. Anyone have the same problem and found an answer yet?

I'm running it on a laptop with a 8600M GS and AMD Turion 64 X2 2.0 processor on Vista Home. I've tried compatibility modes and disabling everything for the game executable in the Nvidia control panel but nothing seems to work.

And for some reason I can't disable DirectDraw in Dxdiag. There's no option for it. Even in the display settings in the troubleshooting tab I can't change anything because the button is greyed out and beneath it reads that the graphics card doesn't allow any changes to be made. I'm using version 179.48 drivers (modified ones from laptopvideo2go).

And no i don't have BG2 and never will so easytutuing isn't an option.

Is it possible for someone to create a dll-fix for people with ATI-cards. I don't undersdtand why there's so much focus on Nvidia cards when it seems like just as many ATI users have the same sort of problems.

I have found one of the causes of black boxes: Comodo Internet Security!

For those of you who use this antivirus+firewall program and have black boxes issues with BG2 (like i had before finding this), try to shut down it before running the game (shut down the program, not disable AV or FW). It will work smoothly even under windows 7 with no compatibility options enabled and also using an 8xxx Nvidia card!
At least it worked for me, I have windows 7 RTM x64 installed and an Nvidia 8600M GT with 186.03 drivers for notebook on my laptop. Haven't tried with the latest drivers (186.81) yet.
I guess that adding the BG2 executable to the trusted program list of CIS could let play the game also while the program is running, but i am not 100% sure.

Dunno if BG1 works fine as well, i'll try it too, as soon as possible.

For fixing BG1, IWD1 (without HoW), IWD2 and PST you can install this fixer utility (programmed by Eddy, WeiDUed by me):
If you use this fixer utility, don't forget to remove the application profile in the Compatibility Manager (if you're using it, remove the profile like this: start -> programs -> Microsoft Application Compatility Toolkit -> Compatibility Administrator -> Installed Database -> right click and remove on the item you created) or stop using the .vbs launcher.

I am getting an install error when trying to install this fix.

Hi, I installed the fix for PST, because I have an Nvidia 8600M GT. Unfortunately, whenever a spell gets cast my display driver crashes. I am also running the widescreen mod and the UI fixer (now running at 1280x800), so could these be interfering with the fix? Or, could the fact that I am running the game through Boot Camp on a Mac be contributing to the problem?

I had the same issues (flickering screen in 3d, black boxes in 2d) on GeForce 8600 GTS, but I solved them through disabling something (IIRC, antialiasing) in nvidia control panel. After that, BGII + ToB ran ok in 3d.

Now I have a newer pc with GeForce 9500 GT. And when I first launched ToB, screen was flickering again. Only Antialiasing Mode - "Override Application Settings" helped. However vertex padding remained, even with proper checkbox selected in BGConfig.

I solved the whole thing with RivaTuner:

Driver settings - Customize - OpenGL settings - Compatibility Tab - Set OpenGL hardware acceleration mode to NV1x compatibility.

Help says that opengl driver uses MSAA by default, which obviously creates artifacts in Infinity games on latest nvidia boards.
Nv1x mode uses SSAA, which solves all artifact problems.

(BG:TotSC on old Nvidia 6600 worked fine though :) )

An update after some more experimentation with PST. I read the thread through several times and additionally searched high and low for other solutions. First I tried reinstalling the Nvidia fix, but it still did nothing. (Perhaps I installed it wrong - should the .dll end up in your Torment folder? - because the readme was kind of confusing as to which files to extract) Using dazzle's fix (the Compatibility Administrator) worked for me, but like it did for others left mouse trails all over the menu, inventory, quest, and other pop-up screens. However, using the fix described here using the Torment .ini I was seemingly able to fix these problems. I have not played that far, but spells now seem to work, even when I disable the compatibility database for Torment that I was using previously. The mouse trails were gone as well.

I have tried all the fixes on IWD 2 and they all worked with the exception of one bug. During the screen scrolling the fog of war flickers. I have tried everything in nvidia controls panel and iwd2 settings with no luck. Is there a way to turn the fog of war off ?

Specs: Windows 7 64 professional
GF: 8800gt with 190.62 drivers

PS: Thanks for the mod

Hello

I've ran into some weird behavior too, one I think hasn't been mentioned in this thread.

I have PS:T installed with Bigg's Widescreen mod, ghostdog's UI, the nvidia fix and all of Qwinn's mods.

I have transparency turned off altogether and I get no glitches except for sometimes-boxish fog of war, but with that I can live. I've also had the walking sideways/backwards issue but that was fixed by turning software mirroring on, without any noticeable performance loss. Other software rendering options are off.

My problem is that performance drops drastically whenever I highlight any door or container. After starting the game, everything seems normal, but then it gets worse and worse, up to unplayable, each time a container is highlighted. Turning any of the software rendering options on or off doesn't affect this in any way, except for 'resetting' the game so it's normal for a while and then starts to freak out each time I try to open anything.

Otherwise, the performance is great even with software mirroring turned on. But as soon as I touch something, it all goes to hell.

Is there any nVidia or compatibility setting I could try to remedy this? Nothing I've tried so far has worked.

I'm running 64-bit Win7 RC with 9600M graphic card and 186.03 drivers.

Thanks.

edit: it also slows down when dropping bodies. i suppose there's some kind of connection between the dying and container animations?

Otherwise, the performance is great even with software mirroring turned on. But as soon as I touch something, it all goes to hell.

That sounds like it's not the video card at all, but something else entirely. Like an Ambient sound missing and as the game tries to start the missing sound file again, again and again, with gives you the lag. To fix that, open the torment.ini with Notepad and edit the "Environmental Audio" to zero and save, or use the Config.exe to get rid of the sounds, this will remove also the stepping sounds etc. but that can't be avoided.
Just remember that if you have Vista, the game need to be not in the program files sub-directories for your edits to be effective...

Thank you for your answer. Unfortunately, that doesn't fix it. Just in case, I've also tried turning the sounds off altogether, but it doesn't have any effect on performance.

So far, I've experienced slowdowns when:
  • hovering the mouse over doors and containers
  • killing creatures (not fighting, just the dropping dead animation)
  • auto-scrolling conversations (?) - this one's a bit weird and nowhere near as drastic as the container thing
  • unfortunately I don't have any spells to test, since my old saves are invalidated by the widescreen mod
Also, the slowdown vanishes when I stop pointing doors, and returns stronger when I do it again. I suppose there's some sort of memory leak, but how? What's so special about a simple change of container's color?

Thanks everyone for the great mod. I've applied it and it has fixed the majority of the issues. However, one issue remains for me in IWD2. In the fog of war, I still see a "checkerboard" type effect, which I'm assuming should not be there. Has there been a solution found for this one? If so, am I just missing it? I've read through the whole thread, and several others, but no one seems to mention this issue.

I'm unable to capture this with a screenshot, for some reason, but its definately there while I'm playing.

Any ideas? Thanks for your assistance.
