I find myself subject to a most unusual thing.

As some of you have noticed in my thread "Installation Order," I was having trouble getting my old discs to work.

By sheer luck, I found a 6-CD version of BG and TotSC in a discount-bin, and bought it. Brand new, still in the package. I brought them home, joyous that I was about to play this grand game for the 750th time.

This time, I installed Baldur's Gate only. No TotSC, or anything else. Thought I'd see if it worked, so I could nail whatever crashes came right after installing a component.

Fucking thing is, I launched BG - and just as with my old discs - Baldur's Gate crashes right after the Prologue-text.

Let me take you step by step:

First odd thing that happens, is that it takes the installation of both BG and TotSC about 30-45 seconds to boot up. The installation window shows right after inserting the CD, but when I click 'install', 30 or 45 seconds, sometimes a full minute, pass before installation begins.

Then, when I launch Baldur's Gate, everything works fine, until I reach the prologue-screen, and click ok. I see my character outside Winthrop's Inn for one second, then some white text on blue background (not bluescreen of death) shows for a split-second, and then my computer crashes and reboots.

This problem is not virus-related: I just formatted my C-drive.

It could be Hardware related: But I can run all other games - older and newer than BG, and I had no problems running BG before formatting.

Is there anyone who might know what's causing this?

What's your grafics card and are you using the latest drivers?
And eventhough that probably wouldn't help, did you install the latest patch?
Did you do a custom install with EVERY component checked (basically a full install)?

Try disabling 3D Acceleration in BGConfig.

It could be defective media, even if the CDs are brand new. Take a look at their undersides for scratches or other weirdness. Also, disable any anti-virus software you have running during install and launch.

What you got was in fact a blue screen, your PC just automatically restarted. To turn this off, go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup & Recovery & make sure "Automatically restart" is not checked. If it's already not checked, I don't know wtf. I've seen this issue a lot on the Bioware forums though, you might browse around there. It could in fact be video card related.

1) GeForce 6600. Yes ;)

2) Yup.

3) Yup.

I've played this game so many times I can't count them all, and I know the basics very well :)

WinXP indeed. And as I said before, I've never had problems in the past either :(

The CD's look next to perfect on their backside... I've disabled my antivirus both during installation and launch (it caused trouble for some of the mods I installed in earlier tries).

I've had this video-card in 4 other playthroughs, so I can't wrap my head around why it should be the graphics that fucked it up...

I'll try your automatically restart-thingy, see if it works :)

Thanks all.

Okay... Switched off Automatic Restart.

Now I get to see the bluescreen of death... But I still have to switch of my computer, 'cause nothing will remove the bluescreen.

As for what the bluescreen says, it tells me I might have to upgrade my BIOS, whatever that is, and that I should press F8 during system-boot to edit my advanced settings. I presume this is just standard screen-of-death-babble?

Copy down the actual error message, and the STOP line and any starry (*) lines after it when you get your BSOD and post it here. That can help you work out what is wrong.

Here's something from Bioware's forum which might be of interest;

Note to users of the six CD version of Baldur's Gate with the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion: When you are installing the six CD version of Baldur's Gate with the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, you must have both the "TOSC Patch" and "TOSC DirectX 8+" patches installed for your region.

I didnt install TOSC DirectX 8+ and mine works fine. Its only for internet play and its not required if you install the BGT thiingy

i would say that you have a hardware conflict. i would be as befuddled as you ...something recently broke or maybe you need to install the game in a different location. could be a hardrive error.

Most common cause of BSOD is hardware issues I think, I'd just check your device manager and make sure windows is in order, maybe you forgot a driver or something

Thanks for your help so far.
