Was there some kind of trick to defeating Belhifet in IWD1? I never finished that game because I could never get past the final battle.3) Assuming reloads. Saying "It's not so hard, just fight the battle 10 or 20 times and you'll figure out the trick" is crap role-playing. It only works if you view BG entirely as a tactical combat game. A smart, cautious player should be able to get through a battle without having to look for the one cheesy tactic that the designer didn't think of.
Oh my... I can hardly think of a statement I could feel more strongly about when it comes to playing games!
Extraquotation deserved from my side and blessed be the one who wrote that!

Please, by all means, carry on the discussion about how to defeat Belhifet! I'd love to know how myself!

IMO, it's fine to include extremely challenging battles into a game/mod as long as they are optional i.e. if they are not tied to the main plot or if there's some way to bypass them without engaging in combat.
However, I think it's a huge mistake to cater a plot-critical battle solely to the experienced gamers. In the best case, I could see it as feasible if the battle is highly responsive to the game difficulty setting and gets significantly easier on the lower levels. OTOH, I don't mind an optional quest/battle that is specifically designed to challenge even the most tactically inclined players (i.e. the battle for the Holy Avenger in IWD2).

As I didn't play a modded game, or I don't remember doing so, I can't say if the Belhifet battle could be had because of that, but I remember that I won one time by killing the golems and then the Belhifet, but that was cause I was lucky at the time, but usually I did loose a few chars on the fight, but as it is the last battle it hardly mattered....

Piercing weapons and arrows. Magic doesn't work on him. Kill the two golems first, then the two demons, then the main guy. Try to kite the big guy til you are ready to kill him. Bring plenty of summons to distract and heals to peel injured champs out for a breather.
