Hi everyone :) I've just registered to say how much I like The Exaltedly Expanded Edwin... I've always seen him as a particularly "underdeveloped" character, with nothing interesting about him. Now he's really got something to bite into :D

Anyway, I must have gone completely nuts to propose this, but if you let me, I can work on the polish wersion of the mod. Seeing him done in french and not polish hurts my ambition ;) . I'm a trained translator, and I think the dialogues with Eddie need all the care of a professional. I suppose it's going to take some time, since while you're working by translating, it's hard to relax by translating too, but doing it for Edwin...

(Now, why am I really posting this boring message? Oh, yes.) I wanted to ask whether I could count on some native speakers, and, of course, the Abyssally Astonishing Author, to help with things I would find hard to understand, and doubts that would, inevitably, arise. Most of the translating work consists of staring at the screen, thinking "now, is that really an insult, or just a joke posing as an insult?". You get the picture.

So, what do you say?

Hello Cykuta! :)

It is flattering that you wish to translate the mod to Polish, and if you really do want to take on this hard work, of course I would gladly answer questsions about what Edwin is saying. (Though sometimes I wonder if he knows it himself, yes I do.)

I can work on the polish wersion of the mod.

Yupi! There is at least one person ready to appreciate your idea, and, in the future, after dealing with Tsujatha and Xan, to play with translated Edwin ;)
BTW, how is it possible that i dont recognize ur nickname? U are not active member of any of Polish BG forums, or am i not active enough to remember you?

cheers

Great. I was just thinking someone was ignoring me (altough that is, of course, impossible ;) :D ) I am not a member of any polish BG forum, because I'm not much of a forumer. With all that translating and gaming, I spend far too much time gazing at the screen already. I am a memeber of GameBanshee, though, going under a name of QuenGalad. I adopted a polish nickname here to inspire trust :D

And could someone please tell me how to extract the text out of the mod? I can't do that myself...

Member of pl forum or not, nice to meet you ;)

What do u mean by 'extract"? Usually u just need to find *.tra files in mod directory, open them and change eng text to pl. There is very useful tool made by ppl from BWL - it's called TREP and it helps a lot in translating. It's a lot more comfortable than word - in my opinion ofc

Good luck and plz check ur PM :)

Right. First problem. After-Bodhi resurrection dialogue, we get a dialogue option:
"*sob* don't you get all mushy on me, Eddie, I must make sure it's you and not some sort of a dream."

That is a response to Edwin saying he wants to "berate your stupidity". Now I get the general idea, but I need some information on the two strange words, which I don't know. What exactly does "getting mushy" mean? And what register do "berating" and "mushying" ;) belong to?

Edit: And please don't get the impression I'm that advanced with my work from my asking about Bodhi. I'm not doing this chronologically. :)

Berate - to scold; rebuke

mushy - overly emotional or sentimental (As teenage girls with puppy love tend to be)

Wow, that was quick, thank you. I see I have to reformulate those parts to fit. :)

Now please excuse me, I tend to forget other people are not neccesarily linguists, so another question, or rather, the same one: what register is that? That is to say, which of the four typical language "styles" do they belong to: normal, every-day language; vulgar language (well, I don't think so, but let's list this proplerly); careless street/garage/whatever speaking, or pompous high-occasion language (same as above :) ) ?

Forgive me for that quick lesson, I'm not showing off or something, it's just that I feel this question is going to be repeated, so I thought it better to make things clear... Registers are the tricky part of every translation, and the reason for all of us having foreign ex-friends, who started as pals, and turned to enemies after getting too much questions like that in most inconvenient moments :D I'm currently looking for a new french-aid, my friend from Belgium not replying any more :whistling:

I'd assume that "berate" is Edwin being his usual pompous self. "Mushy" is colloquial.

Thank you very much for that. You know, it's hard to ask those questions, especially in public, where everyone can see :). It shows my lack of competence, which is always embarassing. But here, I'm really at loss. Dekaras, of course:

"You were in no immediate danger from <CHARNAME> and given enough time and opportunity to blunder about on your own I suspected you would manage to paint yourself into enough corners to welcome my assistance or come to your senses yourself."

does that mean he would get into big enough trouble to welcome assistance? Or what? Sorry about that, I know I ought to do better...

Basically. If taken literaly, the subject wasn't wise enough to realize that he or she had managed to paint a barrier across the only escape route. I'm not certain how one can paint oneself into SEVERAL corners, but that's the gist.
It's implied that Edwin would have found something dangerous enough to make him return to Dekaras for help. Or to make him reconsider/size up the situation. 'Corse, that would happen, now, wouldn't it? Dekaras considers Edwin a-- well, an idiot.

Thanks for help, everybody! I just dropped in to say, that SoA Edwin is almost finished! I have only two dialogues to do, but got a lot of work lately, trying to get a second degree... I'm announcing this slightly early, because I've seen the german translation thread, where I read the german version is not featured into the mod yet. So perhaps, when I'm done, you could make a one big update, including polish, german and chineese version?

Edit: i don't know if anyone is reading this recently, but I'd like to know what to do with the readme file. It is bilingue now, with french translation coming after the english original ends. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to add a third text there, it would make finding the one you want a bit difficult.

I was wondering if I should take care for making the pl translation, but you were first (wait till you' ll fall asleep, a particulary hot Fireball awaits...) .Seriously, I'm looking forwards to seeing how did you manage (Eddie is... specific), good luck, you will likely need it. However, that's really... nice of you - a hard thing to translate...

I did it!

Finally, Edwin PL is ready! There might be some typos, but not much. Gosh, I can't believe it... I mailed it directly to Laufey, but I think it would be a good idea to attach it here too, just in case. And can you guys please tell me, how to put it into the game?

Edit: the compressed folder contains the polish readme file, which I decided to write separately. Don't know what to do with it technical-wise...

Edit2: the previous folder did not work, due to the lack of a ~ sign. Sigh... so here's the new one, hope it works...
