because it still wont open the .dds file for me or i am just a moron and should leave this stuff to the pros

and the really funny thing is i read that niftools converts files to nif, not from what i can tell.
it makes them .ogj files
i guess i'll have to work and try and get 3d max then i can try my had at making armor and weapons
and if i get good a race or 2

then you should be able to open dds files with ps or the gimp, if not use that converter I mentioned before (tga is a good type). and you can edit those images to whatever you want. file suffix like _a, _n are for alpha and normal (normal is a type of bump map)
just be aware if you change the mesh a lot the mapping will look stretched or compressed depending on what you did with it. so to fix it you will have to fix the UV coordinates.

yes photoshop can edit dds files tho I think you need some nvidia plugins...try opening one in ph..
you should be able to render them in blender
