hey all,

first of all, i know it's a very "newbie" thing to do, but i'd just like to say thank you for your amazing work. i can't describe how amazing it is to be able to pick up the game i literally grew up on after a couple of years, and be able to add to it infinite amounts of content and tweaks.. so thank you.

now, with that being said, i'm having a hard time with the actual playing-the-game part (which kinda sucks, i would have to say), i.e. the game CTDs, as the lingo goes, every time i'm about to leave candlekeep for the first time (right after gorion heals me and tells me to go to khalid and jaheira when sarevok kills him- the foresight on that guy!). now, it might sound petty, but you have to agree this crash is sorta in the way of having a good, healthy (or any) gaming experience...

anyway, i'm posting my weidu log below, so you can all look at my glaringly novice installation and point and laugh..
i did try and follow the installation order in BP_Mega_Install_Instructions_111906.doc to the best of my abilities, but this is after all my first runthrough of the modding experience (so keep that in mind when you see something incredibly stupid i've done and get the urge to reach through my screen and strangle me)

hope it's not too much of a burden

i might have found the reason for this- i went over the installation order file, and found out i installed BGT completely out of order.. i'm now reinstalling from scratch to see if that's what caused the problem (though by all means, correct me if i'm wrong), but i've come across another problem:
in the instructions file, when you reach step 58, it says "Install any and all ?smaller mods? you wish to place in your game that won?t create an incompatibility with the installation up to this point, or the upcoming BP-WeiDU v177 installation", and then you're supposed to install BP and BPworldmap and that's it.. so to my understanding, i'm supposed to install all of the components (BGT, BGFix, SoS, TS, TDD, CtB), then whatever small mod i want, then finish it up with BP + worldmap? thing is, i have a lot of other small mods i wanna add in "step 58", and i'm afraid one of them might be causing the problems, and even if not, i'm not sure in which order i should install these small mods..

i'm listing all the mods i wanna add. if someone can give me some pointers on those mods (compatibility and order of installation), i'd be grateful (i'm waiting with the rest of the installation for now  ):

Just getting back to reading this. Beautiful summer day, it was. Hope you went outside and enjoyed it, wherever you are!

Hey, could you do a favor (for all of us): could you PM one of the moderators and ask
(1) rename this thread to "azoun's Mega Mod installation" or something similar
(2) take any other threads you may have started and merge them with this one
(3) move the final thread to 'Mega Mod Help' forum

Most players' issues are related so it's best to keep their posts in one place.

Now RE-looking at your weidu.log I guess it was pretty obvious that you didn't have BGT installed. LOL!

Overall the original list looks fine, but you're right the order does need some re-arrangment. As to install order, I have to say that you gotta read more postings about some of these mods, as I don't use them but many have, and by reading their posts you'll discover where to put them.

So here's my guess:

-g3Fixpack
-SoS
-TDD
-CtB
-TS-BP
-BGT
-DSoTSC
-NToTSC
-BoneHill
-Sirine's Call
-BG1 Unfinished Business V15 (this is still in beta. I recommend you do not play with this until it's official)
-BGTTweak
-SCS-BGT (if you want. I see you removed it before.)
-Minsc Berserker Kit
-BG1NPC_PORTRAIT_PACK

-Ascension
-Weimer's Solaufein
-d0QuestPack
-BPv177

-FR & RoV V4
-AbyStore

-Chloe

-ItemUpgrade
-Tactics "for MegaInstall" (Requires a modified Setup-Tactics.TP2. That file is [at this link].)
-Deeper Shadows of Amn

-Banter Pack V6
-BG2Tweaks V4

-g3Anniversary
-Exnem Vault V5
-Worldmap

-NPNPC Portraits
-BlondeImmy V4
-Some PC Soundsets (not really a mod)
-Some PC Portraits (not really a mod)

This should get you started. If anyone else sees some problems I'm sure they'll post. Also, do some more searching some of the unique mods, as I recommended above.

A global mod will have to do that.

Also, do some more searching some of the unique mods, as I recommended above.

of course i made the most out of it! i was at the beach for the better part of the day... 8)

anyway, you're a life saver! i'm following your suggestions, though i found some contradicting advice in the rest of the forums:

- in the thread of 'mods that should be installed AFTER BP Weidu' they say to install BGT Tweaks and d0QuestPack after BP, and not before, like you wrote.. with BGTT i also noticed there's some conflicting tweaks with SCS, so i just won't install it and stick just to SCS. now, seeing as d0 is BG2 related (and not BGT), i'm making a logical (i hope) assumption that installing it after BP (like the thread said) won't hurt BGT.. hope i'm right

-about UB- i didn't know it was a beta.. where does it say that? anyway, i'll take your advice and won't use it..

-and one other thing- the BG1 NPC project- i looked and looked and couldn't find any conclusive opinion on whether or not it's compatible with BGT and Co. (other than a post saying if you do install it with TuTu you need to uninstall it before transitioning to BG2).. is it even worth the trouble? (as a mod, that is)

oh and i tried looking at the staff list, and i'm ashamed to say i don't know which one to PM about the thread-moving suggestions you made

Another sweet summery day. Already took advantage of half of it, so gonna chill for a few then have a nice sunset dinner with the gf and her kids...

Nugrud, thanks for the link. The fix sounds easy, but of course I've never used it (and probably never will): (1) in Chloe's TP2, search for all references of 'CHLOE.DLG', change them to 'NPCCHLOE.DLG'; (2) search for the file 'CHLOE.DLG' with the Chloe mod folders, rename it to 'NPCCHLOE.DLG'; (3) install the mod.

Or just follow Ascension64's advice.

azoun: what are the links to where you read these things, as it'll help folks give better advice.

The philosophy of what to install before or after BP was discussed in the past and summarized :rumbles thru previous posts: in Salk's excellent effort, BP-WeiDu Compatibility Guide.

Keyword: guide. In terms of tweaks or AI mods, you must decide which mods you want to take precedence over others.

- BGT tweaks, as far as I know, can go before or after. I install it before with no probs, as I want BP to trump.
- d0Tweak can go before, but if you want it to trump BP, put it after.
- I don't think SCS conflicts with BGT Tweaks at all, but let's see your link, might learn something new.
- I thought BG1 UB was still in beta? If it's primetime now, I wanna know.
- BG1NPC is precious to many of us but it's probably one of the most complicated mods being worked on. v1.11 is what many people use, but apparently it needs work. Yet v1.12 is still beta.
I use v1.11 and there are no game breakers (although you have to unistall it before the BG2 transition to avoid some annoying dialog bugs).
So I suggest if v1.11 is still available, go with that.

As to moderators, no shame--no foul: try either K'aeloree or SConrad.

i already finished installing the game, without BG1NPC, UB and Chloe (figured better safe than sorry <_< ), and so far so good.. i just left beregost for the first time, and all is well...
anyway, i read those things in the same link you put to BP-WeiDu Compatibility Guide by Salk.. he says there that BGTTweaks and d0QuestPack/Tweaks should come after BP and i PMd him about it and he confirmed it.. he also said that it's best to install all the tweaking mods as consecutively as possible (barring the BP before/after issue), so i hope this helps others..
as for UB, i just couldn't find any mention of the current version (V15 i think) being a beta in its download page or its readme...

anyway, i now have another question
if, let's say, i do find the BG1NPC v1.11 (is it small enough that you can post it here, btw?), and i want to install in on top of my already up-and-running game- what do i need to do? just install it over all the other mods? or uninstall everything to the point where NPC (or any other mod i want to "insert", for that matter) and then install it and reinstall everything else?? bottom line, i guess i'm just asking how do i install a new mod when i already have a complete mega-mod install?

:D

I think he had BG1 UB (not BG2 UB) in mind, which is for BGT still a beta. V15 is the latest version of BG2 version, not beta, though there exist some bugs, which will be targeted with new upcoming version.

Nugrud, you have a good eye. azounn, you initially wrote BG1 Unfinished Business V15; you should have put BG2; I should have noted the v15.

...Salk.. he says there that BGTTweaks and d0QuestPack/Tweaks should come after BP and i PMd him about it and he confirmed it.

I respect Salk highly. I respect him so much that I can cofidentally say that he is wrong. Those tweaks can, safely, go before or after BP. I know this from my own install, and so do others. I also remember having the same kind of discussion with Salk when the compat list was developed. (Some of which happened via PM--ha!)

I recognize that you, azoun, are trying to 'play it safe' with your installation--as well you should. Once you play more often, and spend the time studying earlier discussions on issues, you'll be able to decide for yourself where you want certain mods to go. Didn't I write that above?

if, let's say, i do find the BG1NPC v1.11 (is it small enough that you can post it here, btw?)...

No.
Is this version not still available? If it's not, it's time to do some activism to get it back, as v1.11 is a working version and not a beta like v1.12.

...bottom line, i guess i'm just asking how do i install a new mod when i already have a complete mega-mod install?

Normally only tweaks can be installed after you've started a game. Because of the changes that BG1NPC make I do not know what consequence it will have to an existing game. You could either prepare to do a clean installation, install the mod and start or new game, or do without it.

well, if what's written in Salk's guide is wrong, maybe it should be changed (so that others won't go through the same confusion i went through)..

anyway, i'm really glad i 'played it safe'.. so far i'm in bonehill, and not one bug to date.. i really recommend going for a relatively "small" mega-mod install for beginners.. having had to reinstall the whole shabang even one time (when it continually crashed in candlekeep) took several good hours (and that sucks!)

and regarding my last question, i'm still not sure i understood your answer. if i do want to take the risk (not saying i will  ), do i "roll back" the installation (uninstalling everything up to the point where the mod i want to install should go, and then reinstalling), or should i just install it on top of everything (barring GUI and Worldmap, which i assume should get uninstalled/reinstalled anyway) to minimize the damage i do to the game?

oh, and i'm posting weidu log, so that if some other new guy's looking for a good install that works (so far), he can use it:

I thank Azazello for his respect (undeserved), which I return of course.

But I don't think I am wrong. Azazello himself says that he's sure that the installation order of those tweaks in relation to Big Picture would not matter. As general thumb rule, every modder suggests to place Tweaks towards the end of the installation list. This general rule can be applied to BGT Tweaks and Ding0's Tweaks.

SimDing0 himself recommended installing his Quest Pack after Big Picture.

It is absolutely possible that installing BGT Tweaks and Ding0's Tweaks plus Quest Pack before won't cause any harm. I just feel safer advising people to not do it.

On the contrary, BG1 NPC v11 actually was still a beta, or perhaps an alpha. I forget. It did have game-breaking bugs. Still, we've got an internal beta that is proving stable. The plan is to release it as a full version 1 in the near future, as in within the next month and a half.

Just to clarify a bit of misinformation, BG1 NPC doesn't "make any changes." We were very careful to make sure that it does work well with other mods. Some of the typical mods in a Mega installation do strange things to banter files, so it's advisable to install them prior to installing BG1 NPC, which appends rather than overwrites. All dialogues and script blocks now contain a variable that prevent them from happening in BG2, so there are no longer conflicts with other mods that add PID.

I'd like to add that I'm seeing a lot of BGT installations that include BG1 Unfinished Business. Has this issue been resolved?

Hey, hey, BG1 NPC's history didn't start in 2007. :) In 2005, even before Phase 3 came out, it was playable. I've seen reported bugs, and, yes, even in the version which is now on the site, Minsc's/Coran's stutter happens, unfortunately, as do other issues; but I also know I've been able to make numerous playthroughs without any trouble, save for taking special care to have saves just outside of Beregost available - and I know there were others, Dynaheir Romance testers, players and BG1 NPC team members, whose games weren't broken(I'm taking Azazello's word on BGT side, though - I can speak from experience only from TUTU one). And, no, it didn't have a beta tag in my memory then. A beta tag was appended, when BGT side was merged. Just saying this to clarify a bit of misinformation.

In any case, I will recommend this heartily: start a _new_ game after installing BG1 NPC, every time, whatever version you're using - just to be sure. There's just too much content. And, as berelinde mentions, install it after "big" mods.

The "game-breaking bugs" were for BGT users, with trigger mismatch. It causes CTD in BGT, but not in Tutu. ;)

And no, there isn't anything in BG1 NPC that could explain a CTD on leaving Candlekeep, since you don't have any NPCs with you, at that point.

If I remember correctly, there were betas of BG1NPC-BGT but never alphas. I think v1.11 is a beta the same way BP is a beta.

I only remember problems were reported when players went into BG2 (I only know of the Jaheira looping dialogue thingy), and there were suggestions on how to avoid them. Nobody's reporting "game-breaking bugs" recently. A stable version, or players reluctant to report errors?

I have never read that v1.11 caused ctd in BGT, BG1, BG2 or elsewhere. If you've got reports of this, I'ld be curious to read them.

My apologies. I should have made clear that I was challenging azoun's position that you said these tweaks must go before BP; when in truth it is recommended that they do (as SimD does).

Still love me?

if i recall correctly (actually, i don't need to remember, i just scroll up and see what i wrote), i wrote the following:

"anyway, i read those things in the same link you put to BP-WeiDu Compatibility Guide by Salk.. he says there that BGTTweaks and d0QuestPack/Tweaks should come after BP and i PMd him about it and he confirmed it.. he also said that it's best to install all the tweaking mods as consecutively as possible (barring the BP before/after issue), so i hope this helps others.."

so, unless i'm getting myself totally wrong (which I highly doubt), you did challenge Salk's position, not mine...
