Hello,

In my last mega-mod-install attempt, I experienced a major slowdown in Chateau Irenicus - where my characters seem to teleport to vaqriosu places rather than walk to them (though in the previous CandleKeep portion of the CTB mod I experienced no stutter at all. I've now checked previous posts and it might have been due to my installing the "make werewolf paws not dispellable" component - since this feature is, anyway, de facto, eliminated by the Rebalanced Shapeshifter component of BG2Tweaks, this isn't necessary, anyway, so I've decided to do a fresh mega-mod install all over again, without Bg2Fixpack's "Non-Dispellable Paws" component.

What I'm basically interested in is any solutions to solving this slowdown problem, in the high likelihood that the above component wasn't the only reason for the slowdown. I've read in a couple of posts that not including bags of holding in the inventory might work(the game's a real nuisance without these bags, but I'll see if that works. I presume that, like with the slowdowns in Tutu, the ambient volume should also be set to zero, and, while it's never worked for me before, maybe lowering the overall settings(ie no footstep sounds, poorer graphics etc.) might sort things out, too. Anyone have any other solutions, based on playing through previous mega-mod BG2 games?

The solution to this problem has been elusive, to say the least.

Some users have reported slowdowns while using mods that add substantial script to baldur.bcs, like Improved Anvil. Essentially, any mod that continuously checks for items or spells runs the risk of slowdown. And not all of these cases are obvious. Saerileth continuously checks for both unholy and holy items in her inventory, so that's the equivalent of using a bottomless bag. Gradual drow item disintegration of BG2 Tweaks and avatar morphing script also add a bit.

Sometimes, it isn't one single thing that causes the problem, but a wide array of things.

Hey Strontium, can you post your weidu-log? No way to tell since there are so many combos for the mega-install. It is known that you have CTB installed and I have not tnstalled it yet. Search the forums for slowdown/performance topics. Sometimes it could be NPC, item or spell related. Do you experience the slowdown in battle or just the ambient area (ie. exploring) or both? Sometimes it could be a stutter bug. Do some searches for your mods and even NPC's you have at that time. Also do a search on the AR0600 or 0602.bcs I believe seeing some posts and/or fixes on that. I have solved a lot of my slowdowns, stutters and CTD's from messing around with editors SK, NI and IE.
Good Luck and let know what you discover!

Where can I find these SK, NI and IE editors? Are they easy for non-programmers to use(ie like ShadowKeeper etc.)

Here is my WEIDU log-file(please give me some idea of where I might have gone wrong, in your opinion(ie too many Item-adding mods/too many NPC mods or specific mods whichoften cause trouble - I was pretty careful to avoid those mods which are said to cause a great deal of trouble such as the "Improved Anvil" mod etc. About the only mod that can cause difficulty in my install(at least, that I know of) is the Refinements Mod, but that's easily solved by copying 2 files from the Darkest Day folder):-

Sorry about the abbreviations. SK is ShadowKeeper (which it seems you have) is your save game editor
IE=Infinity Explorer is an Infinity Engine browser which can open and edit files IE=Infinity Explorer is an application to open and edit files in your BG game (dlg, bcs, tis, etc) so that you can see what is going on, KINDA COOL to look at especially looking for dialog triggers and such. They are all good to have and play around with, especially for mod creation.
here are the links to those for anyone:
Shadowkeeper
NearInfinity
InfinityExplorer
Anyway looking at your wiedu, which I must say must have been time consuming  . I assume no problems with installs. Well, I haven't played this combo as there are a lot of components I am not sure of. Here are the ones that may cause slowdowns
~SETUP-BATTLES.TP2~ #0 #13 // Improved Dungeon (What dungeon--Irenicus?)
~VIC.TP2~ #0 #11 // Improved Irenicus Dungeon(Not as difficult as Improved Ilyich)
Slow performance can be caused by "conflicting" mods, too.
The tactics mod I have not installed but I have BP instead and I followed the same path as you with DSOA and not duplicating some of those components. So it can't be there.
What version of FR-ROV? have you installed?

Check this out I am sure you have but you may try the alternate 0602bcs by erebusant

Stick with it because I get sick of reinstalling over and over because of a problem, albeit, a minor one where as I could just take a file out or replace one to keep playing the game. You have done the research on compatibility but that never means the play is smooth.

Hey at least it isn't CTDing on you
:whistling: No jinx intended :naughty:

I haven't tried CTB yet. I know in past installations with that tweak the game slowed down a little after Underdark when I had drow stuff. Maybe it is the whole tweak itself??

According to your WeiDU.log you have installed Rogue Rebalancing before Quest Pack and Tactics. While it's not directly related to your slowdown issue, I thought I'd mention that Rogue Rebalancing should always be installed after mods which feature general AI improvements such as Big Picture, Tactics, Quest Pack...etc. Otherwise, some parts of RR like the "Shadow Thief Improvements" component and Arledrian's Silverblaze Quest may fail to function properly.

Slow performance can be caused by "conflicting" mods, too.

The "Improved Dungeon" mod-component only changes the demon-knight on level 1 and the 3-4 shadow-thieves in level 2 in irenicus' Dungeon. I'd thought that the "Improved Irenicus mod didn't specifically conflict with those two encounters but if it did, it would just overwrite them. - well, perhaps I'm wrong re this. I won't install the former component.

The tactics mod I have not installed but I have BP instead and I followed the same path as you with DSOA and not duplicating some of those components. So it can't be there.

I've never bothered with this one before. I'd assumed it was amerely a fix intended to sort out the bugs in the Big Picture mod - are you sure it won't be a problem for a non-BP install?

Thanks for the info, so far.

I'll definitely get rid of that component - besides it's not really necessary and I gather that any mod that checks for items, such as whether drow items will degrade/disintegrate, slows down the game.

Re drow-gear:- As I'm just starting the game, I have no drow gear, so that's not it.

I have several other questions:-

I would love to hear from someone who's extensively played through BG2:TOB with Tactics mod-installed as well as other BG2:TOB games with the Big Picture mod installed, instead. First of all, did you find the BP-Core AI better or worse than Tactics(ie more lethal to PCs)? I can't believe that they're the same, despite reassurances. from some posters.- given the readmes etc. Also, did you find the BP mod's Sendai even remotely challenging compared to the Oversight Mod's (multiple) version of Sendai? I have to admit I loved the Tactics habit of hostile liches casting horrid wilting spells etc. instead of Bioware's power-word stun spells etc., and I want a similiarly very difficult game as I've played through it so often before. Also, how many Big Picture bugs did you encounter(and which ones(please give details) were game-breaking, requiring CLUAConsole etc.)? I've played through Tactics with a dozen other mods installed, along with TDD, and only had a slight problem with TDD.

Lastly, if I did choose to install Big Picture mods etc., would I have to give up on installing any and all combat-/encounter-enhancements mods such as "Improved Battles" etc.?

I played with Tactics up to the very end of ToB, and with various versions of BP up to getting into the pocketplane. Each, several times.

I gave you my opinion here: http://www.shsforums...p...&pid=321948

I have never read anywhere that Tactics and BP were the same, at least not from people who actually knew what Tactics and BP do.

Also, how many Big Picture bugs did you encounter(and which ones(please give details) were game-breaking, requiring CLUAConsole etc.)?

I really hope that this question will be answered in a thread that actually reports BP bugs. You got a few answers in your other thread: http://www.shsforums...showtopic=27945

if I did choose to install Big Picture mods etc., would I have to give up on installing any and all combat-/encounter-enhancements mods such as "Improved Battles" etc.?

"any and all" doesn't allow for a 'yes' or 'no' answer, so... Start off by reading the first post of BP-WeiDu Compatibility Guide. If a mod's not listed, then search the Mega Mod Help forum, see if anyone can confirm/deny compatibility. If you still don't find anything, try the mod out and give us a report.

OK, to sum up:- I've tried installing a BG2 mega-mod install all over again - and I checked the game a couple of mods before the BG2Tweaks mod was installed, and everything was fine when I tried a game - no slowdown at all. Once I'd installed eveything, c.5 mods after BG2Tweaks, I tried a BG2 game again, and everything started slowing down badly, as usual. I've removed the "avatar morphing script" component of BG2Tweaks, which didn't speed things up . I'd already deliberately omitted the "Gradual Drow Disintegration" component of BG2Tweaks, and I'm currently about to see if getting rid of the bottomless bag of holding component works. - but I doubt it - my next attempt will involve cutting out all unnecessary NPCs and relatively unnecessary, potentially-conflicting mods like Virtue and P5Tweaks, and I'll see if that works. But I'm pretty sure that one or more components of BG2Tweaks is to blame, given previous reports re some of its problematic components - funny, my Tutu install was never slowed down by the BG2Tweaks mod.

I would most appreciate it if people could give me other ideas re curing slowdown. I've already tried replacing the area602 file, as suggested in the Big Picture threads and here as well - that actually disrupted things after I did it - neither Irenicus and his minions nor Imoen appeared at all. I had to use cheatkeys to get out of the cell and see if I was still experiencing slowdown - (I was). Perhaps, next time, i can try replacing the baldur.bcs file with the replacement file provided, to see if that works.

(One possibility I've thought of is that I was using the Refinements mod "HLA" component , which might have slowed things down. I'd installed the XPlevel.2da file from Darkest Day(TDD) into the Refinements/hlab/shared/copy folder as stated in the Big Picture compatibility thread(I couldn't find a XP.2da file in the mian TDD file, so I merely improvised and altered the figures in the CPCap.2da file in the SOA/override section, until I was able to reach level 50 with my triple-classed fighter/mage/thief - the BP-thread had stated that games with TDD or BP installed had level-50 rulesets which interfered with the HLA component of Refinements. I only just realised, after careful scrutiny, that there is also a triple-classed HLA component in the BG2Tweaks mod, which it might have been better to install - it was always skipped before, because I'd installed that Refinements component, beforehand. Anyway, I guess tinkering with the override files is considered a lot more dodgy than using WEIDU, so I'll see if this time round, it works without the Refinements mod at all).

One question:- If I install Tactics mod as well as the DOtQuestPack and the DoTWeak mod, in which order should I really install them? After looking at the Big Picture threads, I'd thought that they should be installed in this order:- DoTQuestPack, DoTweak mod, and Tactics mod - is this correct?

Well, leaving aside issues of mod compatibility for the time being, I should note that an overstuffed override folder can also cause stuttering and the lag you experienced. The big mods biff themselves in order to avoid this, but all those small mods that add WAV files to the override folder can really inflate the folder's size, slowing the game down considerably. A custom biff-job of all the WAV files in the override folder cleared up my issues in a jiffy, FYI.

Still, that's not to say that you don't have compatibility issues in your existing setup. I can't speak as much to that, as I haven't completed a game to ToB in about five years, despite about 30 mega-reinstalls... <_<

Derkoth, could you give some insight on this custom biff of wave files??

Uh-oh, this is gonna be fun...

You can look at the biffing file in nearly all the large Quest mods, usually called <something>install<something>.BAT, or <something>.BAT. You'll see 'make-biff' commands in them. There're also threads about biffing, search just the Title for 'biff'.

Thanks. I just got hold of two biffing mods - one normally designed for NEJ and a smaller biffing mod. I hope they work.
