hi all.....

Here I got this hurmongus install finally done OK, the bp, ctb, tos, all the other biggies, worldmap, etc....

IMPRESSIVE!

I Am Impressed, as I took it out for a test drive, the Chores thing, and the intro movies were amazing.
so was the little chores fast forwards mod.

Thus I finally found the beginning dungeon and the spell animations were also amazing.

been years since i began this here bg2.

but there was One Little Problem, and newbie me cannot tell if this is game related or a bug!

I cannot save my game, there at the very beginning! the panels on the left side do not display anything but large "N"s!

Is it that I have to open the cage doors and then go get my gear and then the panels activate?
or is something Wrong. I can bring the panels up or down by that hotkey. i had not tried the quicksaves keys, but where oh where are the links on the panels at the left of the screen?! there must be several functions there.

this is a "terribly newbie" question, but if this is a real problem, what can i do about this, as i need to save my game!

a quick look through the searches gave me nothing.....I will continue to try....

thanks...freestone

I don't know if it's intended or if it's a bug, but i'm fairly sure you should be able to save your game using the quicksave button ("Q" by default).

What resolution is your game screen? If it's higher than 1024x768 - it's causing your problems.

I had not thought of that, seeing it was late at night when i test ran the game.

however, i have the res set at 800 x 600, and my desktop is set at 1024 x 768.
maybe i can try the 1024/768 setting and see if that works. i suppose it could be a problem with the GL
too, on my radion video card.
all i see on the left panel, are huge squares that have a large "N" in each one, and this is so from the
"rest" icon, on up!

I will try to "diddle" some, later, on the settings.

any other suggestions?!

I run with 800x600 on full screen with my monitor at 1024x768. I always have so I don't think that's the issue.

umm, have you tried hitting the Y button? Y hides/ reveals the left-hand panels? and if somehow you've installed a GUI mod that has corrupted the interface, then: G = main screen; M = map; R = character records; I = inventory; O = options (including saves); W = wizard spells; P = priest spells.

well i got to my computer this afternoon, and did some checking.

this here Interface, seems to me, to be very very strange, maybe a mod did do something, but
I found that as I began a new test game and set the res to 1078, the left "N" panels were still there.
then i CLICKED on each one and low and behold the proper window comes up for each panel!
then, thus, i saved my game and quit. then i reloaded the save and *another* weird thing happened,
the full screen was without a single bit of the interface, i could move the character around. then i noted that the game loaded unpaused! But as i paused it, the panels and interface came back!!
when I unpaused it, the whole interface was gone again.
digging deep in the manual, i found that the loaded game somehow toggled the "h [???]" key, the
key that toggles the whole interface to be off and on, it was "off". the game loaded with it off.
maybe a mod, making my entry into bg2 strange!

anyway, everything is now OK, maybe this post will help some other newbie to bg2, who finds the interface to be weird.

thanks...all

If I understood your meaning - good grammar&spelling obviously are not your strong-points - the exact same behavior happens to me at the beginning of every BG2 game I've played. Mysteriously, it disappears - i.e. the interface acts properly - once I leave Hotel Irenicus, or just leave the cages area (perhaps after doing a manual save ot two?).

Go figure.

It is all that about i can do, with my adult high level functioning autism to be able to type at FIVE words per minute and 'caps" never ever "take" so i have to ignore them! a pain to write longhand....

The Tallahassee Asperger Adult Peer Support Group
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
?The Support Group? The Support Group is a fellowship is composed of people who come together in monthly meetings for working out social difficulties and other life issues. The Support Group participants are from many walks of life and are of diverse ages, economic status, social and educational backgrounds. The only requirement for membership is a desire to work toward overcoming and/or dealing with social difficulties and other life issues, including interaction and relationship skills in a safe, semi-formal setting.
The program has only just begun. Many people with Asperger?s Syndrome (AS)* suffer from problems as diverse as depression, anger, broken or strained relationships, grief, anxiety, low self-esteem, panic, abnormal fears, resentment, jealousy, guilt, despair, fatigue, tension, boredom, loneliness, withdrawal, obsessive and negative thinking, worry, compulsive behavior and a variety of other issues. The Support Group respects the confidentiality of participants at all times. The Support Group provides a comfortable, supportive group setting in which to share experiences and learn new ways and means of thought and action without fear of criticism or failure. Through monthly peer support meetings, participants discover they are not alone in their struggles. We may each different lives and circumstances, but much of the essential challenges are the same or similar. The program is based in Tallahassee, Florida, starting in 2006.

THE TRIAD . . . .
The first part of the triad covers the social and emotional areas
of functioning and involves difficulties with relationships,
managing unstructured time and working cooperatively - things
often too loose, too intangible, too undefined, too changeable
for aspies to understand fully, readily or easily.

The second part covers language and communication and involves
difficulties making sense of verbal information, humor, irony,
sarcasm, the nonliteral meanings of words and phrases, body
language, facial expression and the social use of language
generally.

The third part covers every person with an ASD in terms of their
flexibility of thought (or lack of the same) and involves
difficulty coping with changes in routines. It also involves
empathy ? that is, sensing, understanding or appreciating and
responding to how another person feels. In addition, it involves
ability to generalize, as in using one ?rule of thumb? for
distinct, but related situations.

. . . AND MORE
Besides the triad, people with ASDs can have trouble with motor
co-ordination, organization, unusual sensory sensitivities or
even insensitivities, depression, anxiety .

======================

I never ever read game manuals as i cannot make a bit of sense of them till i play for awhile, i have to DO something before the abstract words mean anything. i think in images only.

i do not, and will not "play" bg2, as i come to the game to experience the rich world that you all mod-makers have made, plus one of the best rpgs made in years.
but for me to think in those stats, those zillion abstrctions of character managemnet, forget about that. i have lived in my city of tallahassee for 20 years and i know the names and locations of only a few streets, as a NAME has no image with it!!

clumsey....i was always chosen last in every team sport. never married, no kids, no career.
i will always be about ten years old.

so there is my pity party for ya, this is why i have trouble with the typing and i do not think in words at all so thus how can i use words in writings?!

at least i can use a computer!
and i probably will come not here much, as i play my game, but if i do, i will just probably mangle the language and the spellings yet again...

Yes it's happened to me too. I think a cutscene would play out and when I could control my character again the sidebars would be gone. Freaked me out because nobody had the same problem. I ended up hitting every key on the keyboard until I finally got it back. :whistling: Anyway, you have the right solution, make a save and they should stay on there.

Don't worry about spelling/grammar. Many people either have problems with the language, or its not their first language, or other difficulties as you have mentioned. Many people have typing issues too ;) Most of the time I can figure out the posts anyway (or get the gist of it). Sometimes you can communicate fine only in one way, and have problems with others. I'm glad you can still enjoy the game. I think I understand about thinking with the images ( When I give directions to anywhere its pictures in my head, not street names). And the game is rich with images, color, and effects. With the mods added you can play the game for months at a time - hopefully enjoyable ones once you have a good working install. ;)

Remember the forums if/when you get a bug or difficulty as there is usually someone with the vast knowledge to smooth things over. :D (On a pretty good install I still have something happen once in a while)

Good luck, and have fun with BP.
