I find myself unable to play at this great game T_T

I run a WinXP Pro sp2.
I install the game (tryed both 4cd full-install and 2cd version) and start a new Life ... ok.
I play the Mortuary fine.
Onece I get out into the Hive the game crashes to desktop almost every time I load a new area or enter a building!
It closes up instantly and presents me with an "Assertion Failed" error.

Google answers with:
- "Try a FULL install" ... done, not useful.
- "Try deleting the Cache folder" ... done, not useful.
- "Try running it in Win98 compatibility mode" ... done, not useful.
- "Try messing with the CD-Rom settings" ... tryed, it's impossible under XP.

I made several re-Installs, deleting any temp file or registry key ... I tryed the 4cd and 2cd versions ... with and without the 1.1FULL patch and with/without the extra FixPack.

PLZ HELP!
I'm desperate! :(

EDIT:
here's a full error message...

An Assertion failed in D:\Torment\Source\baldur\InfGame.cpp at line number 6303

Funny thing is...my D: drive is just a small partition of my HD where I store important files...there is NOTHING related to Torment here, and why should there be a "baldur" folder into a Torment install?!

Anyway the InfGame.cpp file is not the only one called for, as the line 6303 is not the only one mentined o_O''

After some tests I *think* the problem could come from the AutoSave.
If I delete the autosave before every area transition the game does NOT crash ... if instead I do nothing and the auto-save gets overwrited it crashed at the first transition (or second if I'm lucky).

so...how can I stop the Auto-Save feature?

I've never had a problem getting Torment to run in Win XP. I've actually had a lot more problems with Baldur's Gate 2 than with Torment.

You should be able to disable autosave in the game configuration screen. Does the problem occur when saving, though, or when loading the autosave?

The in-game options let me set the "auto-pause" features ... not the auto-save one -_-
Where else can I look to block that feature?

The problem happens in-game whenever I enter a new area.
This does NOT happen in the Mortuary...but as soon as I get to the Hive the problem shows up.
I think it screws something up trying to overwrite the old auto-saved game...because if I delete it before entering in a new area it NEVER happens...instead if I leave the auto-save in its place the crash is 99% assured :P

umm. weird.
believe it or not, i played this game on 98, 2000 and XP (but not sp2 i think) and it never messed with such problems.

as the re-installing game method does not work, id suggest a lousy way, to re-install ur system!

im not joking. ^^

To me, this sounds as if there's something wrong with your game settings. Try peeking around in various .ini-files and see if there's any reference to D:\. If there's indeed no Torment-folder on your D-drive, the game is obviously looking for something that isn't there.

When it says Assertion failed, it usually means there is a programming problem. In this case, the .cpp is a C++ file and D:\ is probably a drive that the programmer had on his computer, or a network drive were source code was shared.

I had some problems with assertions failed on my box, what I did was uninstall it, and remove all registry keys. I believe that in my case I messed up the install with mods. I ended up installing it on a different computer and then copying it across my network. I run it without it being "installed" so there are no registry keys. I have had a few different "assertion failed" errors. If I leave Near Infinity open I get one, you have to close NI to run PST, and vice versa. I think 787 was one I had a problem with, I never figured out what it was. I did find two mentions to that particular assertion in forums, one Russian. Both other people figured it out for themself without saying what the problem was, so I never found out either.

I realize this is a very late response.

I'm currently have problems myself keeping the game going.

Torment doesn't really have any mods. Installing the patch does cause this problem, however. Install the two CD version and do not patch it. As I said, I have never had any problems with it under either XP Home or Pro and irregardless of service pack.
