Hi everyone,

As a security measure, all old forum cookies have now been blocked from usage. This is nothing strange or unusal; quite to the contrary, this procedure should be applied at least once a year.

I apologise for the slight inconvenience; all members now have to log in once again. After you have done that once, you won't have to do it again (well, until the cookies are killed again, but that's likely to take several months ;) ).

I would recommend also in the interests of true security that all accounts be purged on a weekly basis.

There is a password recovery service, and if that fails, the board administrators can help reset your password.

You'll find that the IP address tools work as well as before, though, Sim.

Ah, I am defeated by your internationally acclaimed ability to hilariously expose the identity of somebody who forgot to log back into the forum after you fucked up the cookies. :)

Actually, it was quite intentionally, but I'll never convince you of that, will I?

(And I'm sure it's perfectly alright for you to log in again.)

Why exactly is this necessary?

I imagine (*remembers that phrasing is "presumptuous"*) wonder if the cookie kill thing was responsible for my being unable to connect to the site for most of yesterday, though I wonder why it was giving me page unavailable errors instead of presenting me with a login screen (might have been something else, then). But could this have any causal relation to the fact that about 19 in 20 of my attempted search queries, even after properly logging back in, give me a page unavailable error? :wall:

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

Cookies (especially from current/old staff members) can be used by maliciousness, and the more of them lying around, the larger risk of someone abusing them. I could be more technical and explain further, if you wish.

No, it was totally unrelated. The server suffered from a failed primary hard disk.

Ah, I see. The HD failing removed all existing cookies, and you now claim you did it on purpose. Bad, bad SC, I defeated your plan  :D

Further explanation is nearly always welcome, but this makes sense. I didn't consider staff cookies, but I can see where that might be a problem, especially if one of the staff members sold his or her laptop on Ebay... ;/ (we need a graphical smiley for that...)

And the search query timeouts? Too much traffic, perhaps? *shrugs* it seems like I get a lot of "too much traffic" errors late at night/early in the morning Pacific time, which is a bit surprising...do we get more traffic from Europe than I would expect, or...?

This issue has been addressed in another thread in this forum.

As for Europe, I'd say we get as much visits from Europe as we do from North America any given day.

Actually, Guest posting seems to be disabled in some subforums. It could be helpful to put it into the forum description, to clarify that it is a feature, not a bug. If it is intended. :)

As far as I know, guest posting is only disabled in three forums, all of which are announced (except for the IE Modding News, but that applies to everyone; not just guests). If any other forum doesn't work, please let me know, and I'll fix it asap. :)

I thought I had put enough smilies there to make it clear I was joking. Or, well, you could have checked that my IP doesn't come from AOL, hence I'd probably knew that :)

Nevermind, it is actually a sticky; I was looking at the forum description from the main page. Sorry about the confusion.
