Any idea what caused the site to be completely down a couple days ago? It was down all day.

So I still can't convince you that it is not Studios' ruling traffic, but the fact that the database is full of Invision 1.0 and dubious administrative nonsense, that is more likely to be the problem?

I mean, sure, on its very own hardware it's likely to be fine regardless, but I think that's a bazooka solution to a smaller problem.

Oh, I have no doubt that the database is full with crap and that it most likely affects the performance and stability of the forum. It was handed to me in a very bad shape, and I've patched it together with ductape just to keep it up and running. When we move, I intend to take it offline and clear out lots of rubbish from it, and hopefully it'll run better.

If it was just SHS, I might agree with out, but it's far from the only reason why I've decided to go dedicated. I've got other sites and applications which require better server performance, software and root administrative rights - and I can't keep leeching space and bandwitdh off the servers at work. SHS is just one of many reasons to move, but benefits greatly from it.

So, I'm going to break the silence a bit and ask why there are lots of 403's lately... The host decided to "sudo chmod -R 000 /home/spellhol/public_html/* " or there are other (more serious) problems under it?

(note: no irony implied against SC, just curiosity... honest ;) )

Heh. If the G3 database can survive a migration path from Ikonboard (ugh!) thru the Invision series and my latest manual pokery-jiggery, I doubt it's leftover DB cruft. :)

It's not going to stop me from going ahead and blaming the problems on the myriad iterations of The Fridge/Rec Room/Future Offtopic Forums Which Render Useless Otherwise Useful Board Functions Such As View New Posts. Perhaps if we got rid of them... :)

Why is this Hypnotoad video so popu... ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

But you didn't go over to Invision 1.0, I think by that time they were already on the "isn't wretchedly unstable" 1.3, right?

Keep in mind, Studios was a very early adopter of Invision. Remember that there were a bunch of posts which were formatted in really goofy ways that later wouldn't even render correctly in non-IE browsers because of the way Invision had tried to insert its own comments, or some such. (Details elude me, I seem to recall it being a bunch of Solaufein posts, though.)

jcompton is right. I have seen some affected posts (unreadable in non-IE browser) here, but I know another forum which upgraded from Invision 1.x to Invision 2.x, and it is full of unreadable old posts because of ill-formated strange HTML comments... This is very painful.
