Each time I return to play Baldur's Gate, I get frustrated with the amount of mods one has to test, research, and explore. Often, the game becomes ridiculously difficult from the hop (Improved Battle's Illych), or so item driven, rather than character driven, that one wonders why anybody has to work when they could sell all those +5 swords of slaying lying around. Some mods would keep fedex busy for a month; some let you have strange encounters with alien vegetable in strange places; some modify scripts, areas and items for the better, making the game a whole knew experience.

The sample poll above, perhaps, with a little attention from you more experience players, can begin an in spellhold evaluation system whereby the poll is pinned to each mod forum, there to be voted on by those who have actually played, loved, hated, and generally tested it. Then others could get a quick idea of what testers have voted on, or have clarified in the posts below the poll, and decide for themselves more easily what's right for them - for their style of play.

So, for example... The Big Picture might get from lots of voters Game Balance 4, Immersion 4, and New Game 5..... (just an example). This would tell other players that yes, this mod doens't make the game too easy or too hard, doesn't detract from the game's theme, and that it adds a whole lot of difference to the original game.

A quick guide without having to trawl through endless readmes and mod forums.

I hope this makes sense..... put your ideas down - will it work, how can it be improved....

(Note: to non spellhold mods, a special poll area might be used, with polls for each of those mods.)

(Also, not all mods would require three questions... eg.... the make over mods like baldur's goth and one pixel production... might only need 1.)

The last time there was an attempt to rate mods was at TeamBG. In a remarkable stroke of coincidence, anything critical of (for example) TDD was heavily edited. In an even more remarkable stroke of coincidence, anything in praise of (for example) TDD was not edited.

If you're looking for objectivity, I'd suggest putting polls in places where modders who aren't as, uh, sensitive to criticism couldn't have any influence on them.

Why is this Hypnotoad video so popu... ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

That or put "You agree to accept civil criticism like a Big Boy/Girl" in the TOS, and enforce it...

Anyway, this sounds like a good idea, but I have friends who would feed you your own gall bladder for the plural-with-apostrophe x.x

"Tyranny is a quiet thing at first, a prim and proper lady pursing her lips and shaking her head disapprovingly, asking, well what were you doing (wearing that dress, walking home at that hour, expressing those inappropriate thoughts) anyway? It's subtle and insidious, disguised as reasonable precautions which become more and more oppressive over time, until our lives are defined by the things we must avoid. She's easy enough to agree with, after all, she's only trying to help -- and yet she's one of the most dangerous influences we face, because if she prevails, it puts the raping, robbing, axe-wielding madmen of the world in complete control. Eventually they'll barely need to wield a thing, all they'll have to do is leer menacingly and we fall all over ourselves trying to placate them." -godlizard

As I already said in the other topic, in one month time worth, if everything settles down correctly, we might have a program and a centralized database allowing you to read reviews, choose components, download them, sort incompatibilities and install them, so no need to put pinned topics everywhere :)

EDIT: Gibberish -> Enlgish.

And I maintain that a reliable recommendation with comments is worth any number of anonymous votes for TDD. Visiting any of the gaming sites ith an IE focus (PBG, Ironworks, SP, etc.) will yield a huge number of mod recommendation threads with various mods cropping up consistently. I believe the fact that certain mods are conspicuously absent from this arrangement is indicative of something about said mods rather than a need for an expanded feedback system here on Studios.
(Rough translation: People are recommending my mods over Jerry Zinger. I am comfortable with this.)

Well, great feedback!

However, as for other sites, and other methods... it is my experience that to have several methods of evaluation is benefecial.. then punters can try them out... and decide which system best suits them.

Survival of the fittest and all that...

And adding to the fact, this system could be up and ready in no time, rather than waiting for the construction of a database, which in the long term would be an excellent resource.

I must admit that having a single area with all the polls on, rather than having a poll pinned to each mod forum, does sound an excellent idea CamDawg.

Who has the keys to this forum?... well the good old dungeon keeper of AD&D 1's dm guide.... sorry -- reminiscing again about the good old days. Whichever way, someone who doesn't have a key interest in any mod... or, simply, isn't allowed to edit.

I don't know... i"m not that clver :(

Anyway, food for thought.

Captain Spider

But - I do agree that anonymous pollsters may distort things a bit... but isn't that the case with any review?

Also, this system might have a wee advantage of having three criteria set for every mod. (Of course, one might see this as being a disadvantage).

BMP mods won't run on weigui, unless their authors decided to stop biffing and making backups of the tlk. This will remove any usefulness out of good votes for TDD on the centralized database :D

Has this centralised database emerged yet?

If so, where can I find it?
