The creator of Near Infinity, Jon Olav Hauglid (joh@idi.ntnu.no) has been MIA for a long time. Yet, NI is still a great program to use for file structure editing. DLTCEP is, of course, a great alternative for the editing of file structures, but as is the case for all sorts of programs that do the 'same thing', each program has its advantages and disadvantages. One temporal disadvantage for NI is the progressive out-dating of implemented file structure definitions due to developments in IESDP.

Hence, I am requesting an able-bodied, Java-knowledgable programmer to continue the production of NI; not necessarily at a revolutionary level, but at least to implement IESDP updates to the file structure definitions incorporated into NI. Permission from the author will be required first, and hopefully we can contact him somewhere some time out there in the middle of nowhere. Anyone up for the challenge? Any thoughts on this?

The release source is GPL; permission not required. But it seems useless to have to go back and re-code all the various changes that were made in the post-132 betas.

Smoketest has the latest(?) source; ask if he'll share.

The way it's written, it doesn't require any sort of expertise in Java to do the updates you're requesting.

Well, it's not mickey mouse either.
I'll give Smoketest a try for the latest source.

Given that all my projects at the moment have to be submitted in Java, it's distinctly possible that I may be able to make some minor adjustments (incorporating updates should be easy, although NI is typically more reliable than IESDP anyway--I have come to conclusion that the latter is entirely an amalgamation of what some people once guessed things might do). If nobody has taken this up by the summer, I will have a look, but it may require bread.

The possibility that you'd be able to is more than distinct. Look at the source some time and see.

'Tis true, NumCreatureVsParty() does not work. Bad IESDP, bad! Er, the IESDP isn't actually that bad, it's just light on the details of when and where something will choose to work; I still occasionally find things that even I didn't know. I much prefer the effect labels from NI than the IESDP, though.

Unless it was just a witty hint that you didn't test anything you contributed, in which case I've now devolved to full mental retardation. :)

It is unlikely that Jon will be working on NI again, so it would be great if somebody else could assume control and begin updating it.

Heh, I asked if I could work Ocaml in my curriculum and the teacher said that all functional programming languages are 'archaeological stuff'. Friday I'm going to turn up an optional assignment (interpreter for a simplified assembler) written in Ocaml :P

I should pick up Java by next year, although for what little I saw of the language I despise it with all my heart.

I tried to reply here but the forum software overruled me. Please continue this discussion on a site with a working forum.

The software is working fine.

For what it's worth, I've been hacking NI for a pet project (iwd1 to iwd2 conversion). I had to add a bunch of missing fields. I've only released a batch mode version of NI for generating text versions of resources (and doing a few other useful things), but the NI source is all there and supports the original utility. I'm going to try and see how Jon wants to handle this stuff before doing more. Time and server space permitting, I may be able to release a slightly updated version of NI.
I gotta get rid of this friggin idiotic signature...

Yes, Jon Olav has moved on to more lucrative coding projects, so Near Infinity is relegated to his "attic."

I'll probably abandon the IE games when NWN2 comes out later this year.
