Round about 80% of the install I get a message to "Insert CD #2." Perplexing, considering there weren't any CDs involved in the first place. Anyone help? Please?

Well, I got the install figured out, but how do I play it? Could someone give me a complete, thorough walkthrough, from install all the way to character creation? I seem to lack whatever knowledge is needed to play this backwards mod.

Its pretty easy. You need a clean SoA + ToB + 26498 patch install and you have at least started a SoA game before you continue to install RTT (you just need to see Irenicus and then you can quit the game).
then when you start a new game after the RTT install you will be able to creat a character and play the mod

I've done that but I still wind up in Chataeu Irenicus when I start playing. Do I set the install path to the main BG2 folder? Do I start the game with baldur.exe or something else?

You install the game to your BG2 folder just like you would do with anyother mod, then when its done extracting it automatically executes the setup file and you should see alot of stuff scroll by in a dos screen and a bunch of other dos windows will popup as it runs thru its thing (the process takes awhile).
When that is done install the update and pick your main BG2 folder for the setup.
you can then run "Return to trademeet.bat" or "bgmain.exe" to start the game
have your TOB disc in your cd drive.
I just did exactly what I told you and it works fine.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I ended up copying my entire Baldur's Gate 2 folder into C:\Program Files\Black Isle, so I effectively had two versions of Baldur's Gate 2 in the one folder. I then installed Return to Trademeet into one, and kept the other with my 'standard' BG2.I've done that but I still wind up in Chataeu Irenicus when I start playing. ... Whichever I want to play, I'll rename the folder 'BGII - SoA', while the other is named 'Original BGII -SoA' or 'RTT BGII - SoA' (depending upon which game).
When booting up Baldur's Gate 2, it will go to the version in the folder named 'BGII - SoA'.
In the version below, I've renamed my standard BG2 folder as 'Original BGII -SoA', while my Return to Tradmeet folder has been named the default 'BGII - SoA'.
Rather than uninstalling and reinstalling versions, I've found that simply renaming the folder is a lot quicker and easier to swap from 'standard' to 'Return to Trademeet'.
