Did you install ToB on this computer? And the patch for ToB? Otherwise, I would expect you to always see the ToB/SoA start screen.
Yes, I installed TOB and the patch and I get the screen that allows you to switch
between TOB and SoA. I'm not getting the TOB screen when you select play or
configure or single vrs multi. On those screens, I'm getting the SoA graphics. It seems a little odd. I suppose I could pull everything down and reconfigure.

the village. Everything seemed to function flawlessly. After the
second meeting with Jermaine, I had a banter with Rurik that I
had never seen before, but was obviously intended to be there.
I don't remember if Shadow chipped in her comment or not.
I saved at the gates of Saltmarsh. If I have time, I'll venture
into town tonight.

smuggler's ship. After killing the smugglers and the
Lizardmen, I picked up Aesdale. He went off with
Blush. Still refuses to speak to me, when I try and
recruit him again. (I think I need to download another
copy of CA.) Then I picked up Althon for the
slog through the Lizardmen screen. Amazingly, the
Lizardmen never target him with their missile weapons,
they always seem to target the PC or Rurik. Oh well.

to get past the meeting with the militia captain. This time the
dialog loop busted on a response by Althon. I had never seen
his comment before, but after he delivered his line, the loop
broke and I can no longer initiate dialog with the captain.
Very strange.

I will see how complicated the fixes are. Maybe I can even make a quick little patch with installer.

THEN EXTERN ~TCALTHOJ~ 5
Change the 5 to a 3 and you should be able to continue the dialog correctly. If you can do this in DLTCEP, you will not have to reinstall. I am not sure how to fix this in NI.
I looked into the Aesdale problem at the inn. This one took me some time. The problem is only if you want until after the 6 hour wait time for Aesdale and Blush to appear. If you are upstairs at the inn before the 6th hour and they appear, he talks to you correctly. If you wait longer and then go upstairs he doesn't talk to you at all. I don't understand why, but I was able to fix the area script so that now he talks to you either way.
You won't see this fix until the next install. I had to also fix some errors in the dialogs for Aesdale, Blush, and Rurik. I also fixed an issue over at the magic shop where Blush jumped right into the conversation. There is now a pause and the storekeeper walks away before Blush talks.

Can you give me his exact words? I suspect I am not having his dialog point back to her. Therefore, the problem is with Althon/Captain, not your download. I can make a quick couple of fixes, and upload them here. You would need to uninstall CA, place the files into the "D" folder under Classics, and reinstall again. However, your saved games would be fine. Other option would be to use DLTCEP or Weidu to install the fixed D files for you.
I will see how complicated the fixes are. Maybe I can even make a quick little patch with installer.
You would ask me for the exact words. I didn't write them down. It was something along
the lines of "This dog has been beaten into submission." What seemed to be a pointed
comment on the PC's refusal to slaughter the Lizardmen.
I'd have to download DLTCEP before I could use it. Let me get to work on getting a usable
copy of DLTCEP on my daughter's computer. I'm going to be heading home to Houston soon
so I will be able to tinker with a connected and ungimp machine.
I found Althon to be an extremely useful fighter. The problem is in curbing his blood lust and
tempering his undiplomatic excesses. Still, with the possibility of salvation, he makes
a very useful addition to a party.

The game will require a restart because I changed a map area and the worldmap only gets updated from the beginning, not from patches. You can always cheat this by fixing your saved game using NI. When we get to Selgaunt, I may have to change the map again. I need some new map icons to match the areas of Selgaunt. They aren't in the game right now. Don't worry, that will be months from now anyway.

That is definitely the wrong line for Althon. He will make that comment in the Sahaugin fortress when talking to the prisoner. Since the comment now works for him, you will be able to continue the talk with the captain. Mistmoor is coming along so hopefully in anothe week I will have it ready to upload as a patch. I will include some fixes like this one as well.

Sounds good. I'm still willing to work as a grunt, writing story lines and dialog for side
quests. I can also do voice work.

It's been a very frustrating couple of days. I haven't been able to get NI to load
and run properly, probably because I have an outdated version of Java on my
daughter's computer and I cannot get a copy of DLTCEP to install.

I'd stomp my feet and throw a temper tantrum but I don't want to act too much
like my students. (Grumble, grumble, grumble . . .)

With NI, it is usually the opposite that is the problem. You can't use the latest version of Java. Go download an older version. I use 1.4.2 (or at least that is what the Web Start program says). If you use "5", can't remember if it is 1.5 or 5.1, NI can't open most of the files.
I have JRE 1.4.2 installed on her computer, but NI will not run.
My computer at work will not let me download anything from Sun's
Java site. Damned annoying. I'm going to hang loose until I get
back in Houston on the 22nd. I'll probably mess around with
NWN or ToEE until then. Hopefully I'll be able to download and
install a brand, spanking, new version of CA and run on my own
computer.
The only way to edit a dialog file is by using DLTCEP, NI, or WEIDU,
right? You can't edit it using Wordpad?

I believe you. Each time I've downloaded a copy of NI, I've tried to install the newest
version of Java. It seemed to work well in the past. At the moment, I can't download
anything from Sun.

java -jar NearInfinity.jar
If you have the available resources, try:
java -Xmx128M -jar NearInfinity.jar
instead. By default Java uses only 64MB but some files may need more depending on what you are working on. So I go for the higher amount. Of course I also have multiple Java windows open so that may be another reason I need it.

Well then it may not be 1.5, but whatever the latest version that Sun tries to force feed you is the version that doesn't work. Older versions do work. So maybe it is 1.6 or something higher? Don't know. There are other posts about this issue also. However, if you are running 1.4, you should be okay. Did you download the NI batch file also? Basically it just tells Java to load like this:
java -jar NearInfinity.jar

It didn't seem to matter which file I used to open NI with. None of them would load the program.
My NI at home works flawlessly and my copy of DLTCEP also works well, I can't for the life of
me, figure out why my daughter's computer is being such a brick.
