seeping man mystery

I'm whiling away my time in the city of Lost Souls trying to solve the five-fold mystery of the sleeping man. I've talked to everybody there (even the worried spirits - only they usually vanish on me halfway through the conversation...). I've solved mysteries one, three and four. I looked at other forums to get help and therefore know who was supposed to have given me the right answers (weary quarrie slave, reaper etc.) but the relevant portions of this particular thread of the conversation never came up. As I stated before, I talked to EVERYBODY but still no luck. Is ist a bug or did I goof up somewhere? I know i can finish the game even while killing the sensei, still it bugs me not to have this peaceful option available.

Weary Quarry Slave, (The one inside the stone quarry past the Pit Boss)
Me: I seek the answer to the Five-Fold Mystery
Him: (Lot of cussing), may he rot in Elysium.
Riddle 2 solved..
The Reaper:
Him: How may I serve you, Sojouner.
Me: I seek the answer to the Five-Fold Mystery
Him: (Lot's of text)
Me: Yes it is, What is he waiting for
Him: She will wait at the gates of Cania.

Alright, I looked at the dialogs and it's like this:
Weary Quarry Slave, (The one inside the stone quarry past the Pit Boss)
Me: I seek the answer to the Five-Fold Mystery
Him: (Lot of cussing), may he rot in Elysium.
Riddle 2 solved..
The Reaper:
Him: How may I serve you, Sojouner.
Me: I seek the answer to the Five-Fold Mystery
Him: (Lot's of text)
Me: Yes it is, What is he waiting for
Him: She will wait at the gates of Cania.
Riddle 5 solved
Thanx for your answer, Pain Elemental. And usually, it would have worked. However, even while having the quest for the five riddles activated and even when three of the riddles have already been solved, "I" don't seem to get the dialog option "I seek the answer to the Five-Fold Mystery" with the weary Quarry Slave and the Reaper, nor with anybody else. It seems as if the quest has stopped for no apparent reason. If, however, I break into the sanctum of the sleeping man, I get the notification that solving the riddle has become unnessecary as I choose to enter it without the Sensei.(?)

If you choose to enter the sanctum without the Sensei's permission, she'll attack you. If you kill her and get her amulet, of course solving the riddle became unnecessary.
Note that it is possible to solve the some of the mysteries without knowing of the mysteries. (The third-fold mystery can be solved by speaking to any Githzerai pilgrim, the fourth can be solved by reading the sensei's book) However, in order to ask about the mysteries, you need to know of of the mysteries. Ask the sensei about the Sleeping Man then ask about the first-fold mystery to flag knowing about the mysteries as True, then you can ask other denizens about the other fold mysteries.

The whole thing would be fine if they didn't have the Scrivener vanish after you finish helping him.

This whole thing seems to not be terribly well thought out. Take a CG character, for example: he naturally kills the quarry boss (thus making all quarry workers hostile) and happens to help the Scrivener before even meeting the sensei. This leads to the problem that there is no-one left to tell him the answer to the second-fold mystery, and the only other solutions (killing the sensei or breaking down the door) would be out of character.
The whole thing would be fine if they didn't have the Scrivener vanish after you finish helping him.
Actually a Chaotic Good character would have no problems with pickpocketing the Sensei for her amulet nor with picking the door. (Who says you have to follow the rules of that stuck-up Githzerai?)
Of course there are points where there are no good alignment choices. For example, for lost souls in Cania (who as petitioners are in Cania for a reason, [i.e. being evil in life]), do you allow them passage out of Cania to haunt the living (Chaotic Evil), or do you turn a blind eye and allow Mephistopheles to devour them one by one (Lawful Evil)?
Of course, I unreservely agree with the "Neverwinter Nights is not terribly well thought out part"

What version do you use at the moment?

He might not have a morale problem with these two courses of action, but if neither he nor anyone else in the party has the neccessary thieving skills, there's a rather major technical problem.Actually a Chaotic Good character would have no problems with pickpocketing the Sensei for her amulet nor with picking the door. (Who says you have to follow the rules of that stuck-up Githzerai?)

Maybe some of the developers have a simple answer to it

Ok, I've finally patched up to 1.66 and...nothing! Still I am unbale to finish the five-mysteries quest. Again I talked to everyone (even the dragon) but no relevant quote in my conversation trees...(sigh). I know I can continue the game by breaking in, it just irks me to have this choice dangled in front of my virtual nose and just have it fading off into limbo (hm, which plane was that again?). Thanks for all your help, but it just seems unsolvable (the bug? anyway).
I think I have the answer to this problem since it just happened to me as well. After being thoroughly irritated, I reloaded an earlier save. What I did differently this time was to talk to the Sensei and ask her about the Five-Fold Mysteries. After that, I was able to get the answers to 2 and 5.

1) The Sensei or Gru'ul (he's the Quarry Boss)
2) Either the Weary Quarry Worker in in Hell's Breath Tavern or the one outside somewhere - I don't remember where he is - or the one inside the Quarry.
3) Any Sullen Githzarai Pilgrim - including the one outside the Temple
4) Arden Swift or the Tome in the Temple
5) The Reaper
