What is interesting is that Bhaal, intrigued by creatures created as the children of the Earthmother (a unicorn, leviathan and pack of wolves) decided to create some children of his own, spawning them in a corrupted druidic pool. They're even explicitly referred to as the Children of Bhaal, though bear no relation to the Children from the BG series.

I thought this interesting, given that the novels predate the games, and no mention of these original Children is made in the games themselves. Though, yeah, they were created as a mockery of the Earthmother rather than a way for Bhaal to stay alive. The only reference I can think of is the Claw of Kazgoroth (the villain in the first of the trilogy) being an item in BG1.
