I am just starting to get into this and after reading some of the various tutorials I was wondering how the more experienced modders mode and set up their workflow?

I would seem that quite a bit could be automated using templates and such?

I think this is very individual and difffers from modder to modder. I guess one has to find the system that fits best for himself. It's also varies depending on what type of mod it is. I sincerely doubt that a tweak mod goes through the extreme amount of banter editing an NPC mod does, for example. ;)

As for templates, I always say that there's no need to reinvent the wheel, if someone's already done it. Note that this probably only applies to coding and such. Still, I would say that you still need to know what you're doing, even if you're using a coding template. Knowing how it works may prove vital. :)

Knowing what you want to actually to create helps as well.

how come you always look so damn cool in every photo I see you in?!?

Speaking of modding, I listened to IER 3 yesterday, so you can have another quote for your signature: how come you sound so damn cool, as well as look it? It's unfair. Seriously.

Still a cyberjock, still hacking the matrix, still unsure of what that means.

As they've said, it very much depends on what you're doing. I'm finishing up a new area at the moment and for various reasons, I needed a load of very similar scripts that were all going to need tweaking multiple times. Rather than write them all individually - or even cut'n'paste - I took time out to code up a tool in VB that writes/modifies all the scripts for me, based on a few input variables.

I think you'll find that whatever the type of mod you decide to create, its form and function will drive the way you work. We've all discovered this the painful way....

Although the above applies, a good place to start is here: the Modder's Resource Center.
