Since he was mentioned in both Torment and BG2 I was just wandering if anyone has some information about him.
From what I gather he was some kind of a planescape arch magi.

The "Machine of Lum the Mad" is an original 1st ed. AD&D artifact. Back then nobody knew diddly more than that about him. Perhaps someone knows something more published in a later edition?
The great wolf Fenrir gapes ever at the dwelling of the gods.

The machine was revised and reprinted in the "Book of Artifacts"
The 2E greyhawk setting has a bit more info on Lum.
There is a whole series of 2nd edition adventures (in one book) that feature the ancient general, wizard, and nut-job, Lum the Mad (and his Machine).
If you really want to know more read "The Vortex of Madness". You could easily build a whole campaign or game around the Lum and much of his hsitory is in that book.

Is the "Vortex" still for sale, or is it out of print?

All 2E material is out of print.
This doesn't mean you won't beable to find a hard copy in new condition, there is still alot of surplus. You could just get the PDF.

Here's a good site for getting pdf versions of the books. I'm sure there are many more, but this is the only one I have bookmarked.

Planes of Chaos. It has a complete history, stats, and quest the machine will send you off on.
