Dunno about SK but in NI the portraits have to be in override rather than in the portraits folder for them to show up.

In SK, custom portraits wont show up if you open the .cre file, but if you have them in override--and in bitmap form-- you should be able to see them in your .chr file. I've had the same trouble where SK wont register some portrait files, but it's only in the case of the .cre file.
It's also a bad thing to make changes to a .cre file while using SK, some of the other editing programs might read the file as corrupt. NearInfinity is actually your best bet to make portrait or any kind of .cre changes without it coming up as corrupt.
At least, so it has been in my experience.

Your PC can access custom pics in-game if the pics are in the game's portrait folder. To find the same pics in shadow keeper, the pics must be in the game's override folder. Try copying them there & see what happens.

That is strange. Have you got more than one version of BGII installed? A backup game or something?

Make SURE that your portraits have an S at the end of the smaller portraits and a L after the larger ones. Otherwise they wont show since SK divides the two kinds of portraits up. Portraits also wont show if the name is too long.

that didnt work either, i think its the size i noticed the regular portraits are 55.1kb large and 6.85 small mine is 62.4 large and 9.84 small they fit perfectly in the game window but that is the only thing i can think of any body know if this could affect it, and if so how can i get my pics that size without messing up the quality. and thanks to everybody who has tried to help so far

What you could do is this:
1. Find the original portraits of the npc you want to replace and put them in a folder to themselves, preferably someplace easy like a folder on desk-top.
2. Then rename the custom portrait you want to use the same as the original and place it in override. Remember to do both small and large.
3. Open SK and your custom portraits should take the place of the original, you may have to reset the portraits but they 'should' be there.
4. If this doesn't work you still have the original portraits to place back into override.
If none of this works then it could be a problem with the size. What kind of program are you using to make the custom portraits?

Actually, you don't need to extract/backup the original portraits. They are in a bif file. So if your renamed portrait doesn't work, or you want to change it, just delete it from the override. The game will revert back to the original one.
Also, the NPCs have 3 portraits each. They use the NxxxxxM.bmp and NxxxxxS.bmp for the in game pics. The NxxxxxL.bmp is for the epilogues and is quite a bit bigger. ie) To change the ingame ones rename with the 'M' and 'S' suffixes.
