Lo folks,
I just wondered if there were any guidelines ni D&D for item prices? As it's driving me nuts the messed up prices in the IE games, and pricing items to fit in.

There are in 3E, though I am not sure what the 2E rules are.

Prices of various items is far more dependant on the setting/economy than anything else. There are generic prices in the core rules and more specific pricing in various campaign settings and suplements.

Can you be more specific as to what you think is messed up and what you are trying to determine prices for?

It's hard to find specific examples, I just find it really hard to price new items.

It's not perfect (since most IE items are magical), but it's awesomely useful.
Thanks! :)

Well, the problem with magical items is, that AD&D or 2e AD&D, only has an experience bonus when it came to magical items. Finding magical items was a players no.1 source of getting experience.

You weren't supposed to be able to buy them, like in 3rd Edition and v3.5.

*Looks at his 1st edition books and notes both a column for XP and GP value on all magic items.*
Rules for buying them were strict, but a well DM'd campaign still made shopping a potentionally interesting adventure in itself. (Not to mention finding a store that carried all those spell components you burned up getting that XP.) :whistling:

In the very rare cases magical items are sold, they go for the most anyone is willing to pay and not a cent less.

if you need a guideline use 5 to 20 times the XP value for creating the item, in gp. Potions may be a little less, really rare items can be alot more.

I cannot imagen a staff of the magi or a vorporal sword going for less than the price of a few warships, several hundred square miles of good land, or a castle.

That would be in pen and paper. In BG2 and most other comuter games things are far easier to get.

Hot dang! You are correct. My bad. I checked out the 2nd Edition DMG and all it was an experience column.
