My copy arrived some time yesterday. I'm not particularly impressed by the LE contents either, though if I didn't have NWN1 or I was desperate to play DDO I might be happier. But the music/artwork DVD is quite nice.

A few early impressions of the game. It's a lot prettier than the original, with more detail and a more "realistic" look to the world. No more layered hills, intead you get proper contours. The character models are more detailed and look better when you zoom in, and you can also zoom out further than you could with NWN1, giving you a wider view. The voice acting is pretty good and seems to be comprehensive with most NPCs having all their lines voiced.

Character creation was a little different to NWN1 but went smoothly enough. At first gameplay felt slightly off, but after an hour or so it felt more natural. There were a few odd things, sometimes my character would attack an enemy in melee who for some reason would rush off to the other end of a fight, and my character promptly followed them provoking a series of attacks of opportunity :( I also don't recommend archery, as even if hang back to shoot enemy characters will rush you, and your own allies seem quite willing to let them. That may change when I actually get another NPC in my party, but in the open it wasn't possible.

The toolset is probably what I'm interested in more. I had a look at that, and it's improved on the one in the original game. Areas maps are going to be more work. That's mostly due to the difference between the original's layered hills and the contour mapping in this one. There aren't yet as many prefabs as NWN1 had, but there is a lot of scope for creating things built in to the toolset. I'd reckon the most useful tool will be the plugins, and there's already one in existence which allows import of contour maps. :D I can already see more options in the scripts than before.

That's just my first impressions. I'll try to write a proper review at some point when I've played more of it.

EDIT: An update containing 82.7mb worth of patch is already out

Mostly because they've included the DM Client, or at least a beta of it. There don't seem to be many bug-fixes involved.

Yet there are a few, and the druid's been buffed.

@Kael: No cloth map in my version. The map is made of the same material as the old neverwinter map. Generally, it's highway robbery to require the extra fee for what I got. As I said, only the DVD was mildly useful. Of course, the box was cool (hooray).

The game itself has been good so far, but I reserve jugdement 'till I've played some more. Gotta go to work now, so I'll be gaming away from approximately 8 PM 'till the early morning.

My copy didn't make it... I guess it's next week for me. :(

Edit: Plus I'll be staying out of this thread until I get it, in order to avoid spoilers. I didn't read any of the new posts here either.

Well they termed it cloth. Mine was the same weird thing as the first map. It's like putting a map on silk. Who does that?

A History of Silk Maps

From what I hear, a number of people are having issues with graphic slow-downs with the game even on high-end computers, can you verify this?

Is a 512MB graphics card REALLY necessary? (or is this just an issue with a memory drain that could be resolved with later patches?)

I know my uncle was having problems and was going to up his card. I'm not sure how it's been since then though.

Bleh, I have a 128 MB, but it runs okay, when I tweak some settings.

I'm running with a 256mb card, and it runs fine, albeit on almost lowest settings.

My cards has 256MB and has run the game with no problems, though not at maximum settings. It's been very stable so far, more so than most new games.

Although it's a better system than mine, it may cause small problems that it's a laptop. I'm guessing it'll run fine though.

I'll try it and let you know. The intel card doesnt have some of the required tech specs but maybe I will get lucky (hopefully) because thats my fastest and most powerful PC that I have.

Just got home from the post office with my copy... I have to agree with Grunker here, the extras are pretty crappy (I got the Chaotic Evil box). The music/artwork are pretty nice, plus the gigantic game box. I'm not really interested in more NWN 1 copies (Although it's convenient to have NWN 1 + add-ons on one DVD) or the DDO trial either. Although I'm content with the Neverwinter eye ring which, for me, is a perfect fit.

This collector's edition simply can't stand up to Gothic 3 collector's edition or Oblivion CE... one good thing here is that I got Dragonshard for free because I pre-ordered, so I don't feel completely ripped off.

I've yet to play the game, so I'll post more of my thoughts on this later.

Edit: My CE had the following extras: A troll miniatyre, music/artwork disc, NWN 1 + add-ons in a special case, an artbook(let), a Neverwinter eye ring, a map (paper) & Dragonshard as a pre-order gift

P.S. Atari sucks! Obsidian, get another publisher!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news Celestine, but I think you need a miracle to get NWNII up an running on that system :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

@Archmage: The worst decision in the last 200 years?

1) Moving into Iraq? Nope. Definetely 100% completely idiotic, but it doesn't even come next to our winning candidate.

2) Creating NWN 1? Pretty stupid, but at least we got the toolset, which kindda did launch a revolution.

3) Inventing the nuclear bomb? Nope. Sure, it was stupid, but again, our winner more than exceedes the stupidity of the A-Bomb.

4) Electing The Terminator for Govenor in California? Okay, I admit, it's a close one, but the winner is...

5) Selling the goddamn video-game license for D&D to Atari, thereby ensuring three shitty, shitty video games in the D&D universe (Pool of Radiance, Temple of Elemental Evil, Neverwinter Nights), plus some other questionable ones, and to top it all off, make a strategy game using D&D!. I must admit, Dragonshard is a decent game, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with D&D, except that the cleric's healing spells are called cure and the humans can build rogues.

Oh Jove, if but a decent publisher had held the license...

Heh, that's why we can't get good D&D games anymore... Atari's all about profits nowadays. What I've seen of NWN2 so far though, has been promising. Although the camera doesn't work too well and it's a resource hogger game... *grumble*

There's been a lot of complaints about the camera. Personally I don't mind it too much, but there are several options to change it. I've stuck with the default one, with the scroll sensitivity turned up higher, but you've got the chase camera option if that's what you like.

As for the Atari issue, I'm not sure they can be blamed for NWN1. I'd certainly hve given the game to Bioware after what they did with the BG series, so the poor quality of the original NWN campaign was a bit of a shock. :D ToEE was horrendously bugged, but it's a decent simulation of D$D 3.5 rules if that's what you want, better in that respect than NWN2.

And thank you for reminding me of the existence of Pool of Radiance, I'd managed to supress that memory until recently. :P

Yeah, I've been using the chase camera mode, it just doesn't turn in the right direction fast enough/with enough accuracy (Most of the time I have to manually turn it around, and that's so slow...)

Otherwise I've got no complaints... oh wait, I'll need a new graphics card, this game has high reqs. Fortunately for me I'm getting a GeForce 7900GS 526MB for Christmas, hopefully that will improve the situation somewhat... I currently have to run the game on pretty moderate settings to avoid the darned stuttering.
