Actually, I'd prefer a re-think on the level system itself - to my mind, it doesnt make sense to gain HP on level up, or suddenly be able to wield a sword better (especially if I've actually been using a different weapon type, e.g. Mace), or become better at picking pockets and finding traps, all at once.
Surely your skills should improve as you use them?

So some sort of a slider then? (Yet another thing which is implemented to a degree in morrowind, seems you should all be playing that :P )
Forward he cried from the rear
And the front rank died
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

Topic split :). Igi, that's a really good idea ;).

IIRC in Morrowind you gain skill points in weapon usage (for example), by using certain weapons?

It certainly makes more sense, but should the player should have some input in how he levels up/ progresses? IMO Leveling up is quite fun, and shouldn't be done away with :).

What about how Deus Ex handles skills? It costs more XP to improve a skill, depending on how skilled you already are with it (so greater proficiency requires more XP).

I actually dont think that the person should have control over it. I mean, if you constantly use a longsword, should you really be able to increase your dagger skills (for example.) This is where training comes in of course, and perhaps there could be both levelling and these sliders whereby the sliders control your skills - weapons, theiving etc - and you gain XP from quests and level up to determine HP boosts, Stat increases etc (and perhaps you get a certain amount to spend on skills also, reflecting knowlege that you may have picked up)
The trouble here is the balance between realism and fun, the sliders are more realistic, but everyone loves levelling up.

Well, Daggerfall had something like Morrowind. Basically, your skills increased with use (or training), and those skill increases determined when you went up in level. When you leveled you got points to put into your stats. At least I think that's how it worked--it's been a long time since I played Daggerfall.

Yeah thats how it works, and when you increase certain skills then the corresponding stat will get a multiplier if you increase it (for instance, you need to increase 10 skills to go up a level, or 1 skill 10 times, whatever, and say you increased acrobatics 4 times then your strength - the governing attribute - gets a 2x modifier, i.e if you increase strength it goes up by 2. You can choose 3 stats to increase each level)

well, in morrowind you do gain level ups and i like that system. when you gain a level you can distribute points. lets say you are a fighter and only use snow balls to attack you can put maimal 5 points in dex, 3 points in str and one point in everything else [this implies creating and throwing balls requieres lots of dex and some str and besides that nothing]. whereas a mage who obly casts spells can put 5 points in int and 1 point in everything else.
what i also liked also was the chrono cross system.

I think that Deus Ex system could work.

I enjoy Morrowind but I didn't like the leveling system, so I think that Deus Ex would be the best

i like it and it is rather realistic. you get better in skills by practicing them and while getting better you level up, global. its good. :)

I think a cross between the morrowind system and the D&D system = win
