what is your favorite loot system? do you wanna have a complete random system? or preset everything? or have randomness except major/boss/hard battles? or something entirely different?
i would like the d2 system with the tweak that bosses have static treasure or always drop unique like god items.

IWD II style would be good enough for me.

Difficult/ Unique enemies should always have pre-determined loot. As for the grunts, their random trinkets are a bit annoying. I'd rather have gold and the occasional minor item.

What is that, then?

Well, the normal enemies drops are generated randomly, though some drops are always the same. Boss drops are the same, only minor changes. Some of the best items are random drops, so you don't necessarily see them at all.

Ugh, no way. Go for preset as much as you can, with the generic enemies maybe having some random system of like a potion or not, or something like that.

I would like preset, because it allows some "cheese" find out from a walkthrough which good weapons can you find first and choose your specialisation points according to that  (what I did in BG)

Shocking :P. Item drops should definitely be random, then!

It also inceases the replay value, avoiding systematically acquiring all the powerful items in turn ;).

As a modder, I'd prefer random item drops from several generic pools (monster X will drop some weapon type, and 2 potion types). You should be able to define your own pools as well, and limit the item amounts in them (e.g. I have my own "igi uniques" pool, so I can make sure tougher monsters drop more impressive items, but, I only want 1 of each item in the pool to be dropped).
The game should also support pre-determind drops as well, so you can positively ensure the player gets something if/when they need it.

It would be good if the item drops were also keyed to creature type, so monsters could drop armor they could concievably make/buy/steal, and not everyone would carry 4 or 5 unused healing potions.

I.e ogres could drop two-handed weapons and gold? I like the idea. It would bring some realism to the monster drops.

Creatures should always drop the equipment their using.

Yes, I agree. But woukd it be too much if every goblin dropped leather armor and axe/bow?

Although I don't like seeing armed enemies vanish into nothing (as NWN), I don't want to wade through oceans of leather armour and rusty axes...

At first, you should be able to loot the corpses of your enemies for free equipment, After that, it just becomes irritating.

You could selectively highlight the ground items, based on their value or item-type (so, tick the "weapon" and "2000+gp" boxes, and press tab, and only the items matching the criteria are highlighted).

I'd also suggest something similar to Dungeon Seige's loot - you can press 'z' and your characters automatically collect the ground items, or you can drag out a box, and they will collect ground items that are inside the box.

So somewhat similar to the BG system, except their weapons are random too? I believe that in BG the misc items that enemies had (except for the preset enemies) were random, except all goblins carried an axe or a composite longbow, and then they had eitehr a gem or a low level scroll, or some gold (for example). Being able to set these 'pools' as igi calls them would be a great thing for modders.

We'll see whether the mod tool lets us do so. I'm not so sure about that.

I don't think this is a problem, though the cheap items might have a flag which removes them before the area gets saved. If you don't touch the item.
If you touch it, it will become a normal item.

I think a more realistic inventory system would solve these problems. There is a real reason people dont carry around 4 or 5 sets of leather armour - its too heavy! limiting characters to a realistic inventory would force players to choose what to take with them. Gems would become useful for transporting large values without any bulk and characters would loot for gold and jewelry, not plate armour and two handed swords!
