Good morning folks,

I could use some help on what appears to be a new problem; v150 has denied me the ability to start BGII. To be specific, when I press the "Play" button on the BGII opening screen I get a window which says:

"An assertion failed in ChSound.cpp at line number 4905". The game will not start.

My v150 install appeared to mirror others' experience. I was halted by the .tp2 file and had to download the updated one. But after that the install went off without a hitch.

I don't know where to start. Can someone identify whether this is a CtB or a BGII problem? Can it be easily fixed or am I doomed to uninstall and reinstall?

As always, your assistance is most appreciated.

Palle,

So do I understand correctly; you uninstalled and reinstalled BGII, Ctb v150 and whatever else with the same assertion error result? I won't bother to try unless you tell me otherwise.

Oh wise ones, we supplicants seek your counsel.

No, not exactly. On the old computer it worked fine, when I reinstalled everything on a new one I got the same error as you do. Perhaps V. 150 does not like XP?? The old one ran 2000...

I am probably not going to do anything about it until such time as CB or someone else with knowledge of the possible problem answers.

Best wishes; Palle Rasmussen

the real question is, what other mods do you have installed apart from CtB? the error message

An assertion failed in ChSound.cpp at line number 4905

refers to the songlist.2da file being maxed out - this file has a finite size, so adding too many mods that add too many entries to the songlist (not all mods that use music do this - some, like Imoen, make no changes to the songlist yet have lots of added music files) causes this error. check these links for more info:

http://www.shsforums...topic=11573&hl=
http://www.shsforums...topic=11562&hl=

i suspect the two of you have other mods installed that add to/ max out the songlist, and so adding CtB causes it crash. possible suspects include, but aren't limited to: BGT, Tashia, Chloe, Kiara/Zaiya and Longer Road.

to fix, you have to comment out (see my post re: Tashia in the second link above) the lines in in the relevant .tp2 file of one or more of the mods that add entries to the songlist (usually the mod adding fewer songs - ie, the NPC mods, unless you have BGT installed, in which case it's CtB).

This happens with LR alone as I discovered when we were testing it in its final stages.

Uninstall thje music component for CtB and all will be fine.

Seif

how come you always look so damn cool in every photo I see you in?!?

Speaking of modding, I listened to IER 3 yesterday, so you can have another quote for your signature: how come you sound so damn cool, as well as look it? It's unfair. Seriously.

Hmm, OK, but I have no more mods than I had on the old computer and as far as I know only CtB that adds songs. In any case, I would not venture to not adhere to experts. However, I am a computer dysletic so to speak, so though I will try to find a way to uninstalle the music component of CtB, I would actually appreciate some help on how to go about it. In order not to spam the list more it can be sent to palle_r@get2net.dk (I am aware that it is unwise to post mail adresses in an open forum but I get swamped with spam anyway as a listmaster of several Yahoo lists, so a couple m,ore will make no difference). Or I can be found on MSN as Macilrille@hotmail.com, but do not recieve mail there.

Thanks and best wishes; Palle

Right, methinks me founds itsss.

It currently looks like this:
BEGIN ~Check The Bodies optional music component.~
APPEND ~SongList.2DA~
~84 AR3540 84.MUS
85 AR3545 85.MUS
86 AR3550 86.MUS
87 AR3555 87.MUS
88 AR3500 88.MUS
89 AR3501 89.MUS
90 CB3661 90.MUS
91 CB3661 91.MUS~
PRINT ~Installing new music. Please wait.~

Am I supposed to edit it to look like this:
BEGIN ~Check The Bodies optional music component.~
APPEND ~SongList.2DA~
~84 J J .MUS
85 J J .MUS
86 J J .MUS
87 J J .MUS
88 J J .MUS
89 J J .MUS
90 J J .MUS
91 J J .MUS~
UNLESS ~84~
PRINT ~Installing new music. Please wait.~

????? Is that it?
And do I then save and it will run correctly? Or do I need to reinstall it (I would not think so, that would create a new unedited tp2 file right??

Thanks and best wishes; Palle

Palle,

I did as Siefer suggested above.  Run CtBv150 Setup.exe and uninstall the music.  Simply say "N" or no change to the game files and "U" to the music.  Takes 30 seconds.  I'm up and running again.

Seifer,

To you, I bow in thanks.

err, you shouldn't need to do any editing to the CtB .tp2 file, if what you posted is correct: the music component says it is optional, so at some point in the install it would have asked you
Do you wish to install Check the Bodies optional music component?
[Y] Yes [N] No [Q] Quit

in which case you choose N. to uninstall, as Seifer says, run the Setup-Ctb.exe (or whatever it is called) again (ie, reinstall), choose, if necessary, [A] Ask about all components, choose [N] No Change for every component except the optional music component, which you choose [U] Uninstall. everything will work fine.

if you wanted to edit the .tp2 file, which you don't need to do, you would make it look thus:
// BEGIN ~Check The Bodies optional music component.~
// APPEND ~SongList.2DA~
/ ~84      AR3540          84.MUS
// 85      AR3545          85.MUS
// 86      AR3550          86.MUS
// 87      AR3555          87.MUS
// 88      AR3500          88.MUS
// 89      AR3501          89.MUS
// 90      CB3661          90.MUS
// 91      CB3661          91.MUS~
// PRINT ~Installing new music.  Please wait.~

but CBisson has already made the music optional so simply re-run the installer and choose to uninstall only the music component, as i described above.

Thank you and yes, but thing is. I have lots of other mods installed and CbT is supposed to be the first Mod one installs. I had no wish to uninstall all the other mods, reinstall CbT in the correct way and then reinstall all the others. There is, however, no harm in trying to reinstall it as things are. I will be back with a report.

Best wishes; Palle
