Okay, this is my idea: a mod which adds a gnome (or a dwarf) who can use the various gems scattered throughout the game to ornate plain non-magical armours, helms, weapons, amulets & rings. The point of doing this would be the different powers of the gems ie. diamonds are associated with purity etc. etc. Plainly, the different gems would add different powers to the plain items, like a diamond ring for paladins or good clerics.
If this picks anyone's interest, feel free to take the idea and use it. Me? Heh, I'm not a modder, sadly, so this is just an idea.

Heh, indeed it does, but shouldn't there really be a use for those gems?

What does it matter if it's a cliche? It's a good idea, and it could give those boring little gems a good use. (Other then boosting the parties funds a little...)

Gems can be used for far more interesting things. Perfect examples are games like Ambermoon.

Aye, it makes sense, as the gem's descriptions often state they're used as magical components. I would say a gnome, as there's a serious shortage of (joinable) gnomes in the game. If the character *is* indeed joinable, 'twould be nice to give him (or her) a costum kit that deals with the gems (if that's even possible) or just a plain Illusionist (combined with a different class?)

Heh heh, it maybe a cliche, but it works! Again, the gems could be used to improve plain items (ala Diablo), but perhaps Lightspeed would want to post some other uses for them here? And I'm thinking of gnome or a dwarf since these races make the most skilled craftsmen (yes, I know that other races have individuals who are also at least as skilled as the best gnomish and dwarven craftsmen) and are the stereotypes for smiths and gem cutters. Perhaps a class like Craftsman or Inventor? And yes, it would add some more purpose for the gem collecting ie. you search for the 2nd rogue stone, because you want to upgrade your helm. This idea just needs a modder to make it true.

There was an item enchancement mod suggested a while ago, and while this isn't as complex it still falls into a similar problem. the game doesn't have a way to simply add properties to existing items, you would have to make each possible forgable item, and add create the dialogue paths to lead to them. You could shorten the latter via local variables that clear once the item is created, but it would still work out to a very large # of checks.

I made an alpha of the Item Enchantment mod that was suggested a while ago.
IIRC, I allowed a longsword to be upgraded with 4 damage types, 4 resistance types, weight alterations, and maybe some more stuff.
It requires several hundred items, a 2000+ line script, as well as a relatively complex dialog.
