I haven't played the game, but to bring in animations from other games (and other formats), you really need a model that a 3D program can work with, or a tool that can export to a workable version. Does Heroes have that?

After 3DO went bankrupt, most of its game titles have been sold to different publishers:

and the assets of Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic were sold to Ubi Soft for $1.3 million.

Well that explains why Heroes of Might and Magic 3: Complete had ubi soft written on it. As for the animation importing isnt the problem with Heroes animations is that they are completely 2D? (for HOMM3 anyway, never played HOMM4 - cant find a copy anywhere).

IIRC, Heroes 4 (aka HOMM 4) diverged from the previous games by having an Isometric battle view, so it might have graphics in a form that would translate into the infinity engine. (HOMM I to III only had side-on creature views). I haven't played it though but I'm sure one of my friends has it somewhere.

After a lot of searching, I found an old forum post with some info.

text search in page for "H3sprite.LOD", which is the post I found the most useful.

A 3D engine programme would really have nothing to do with importing animations or avatars of this time. Once something has been rendered from say, Maya, thats it. You can't de-engineer the avatar as it would already have had colours assigned per bit and so on.

Doesn't work that way. I'm not sure what animation you refer to but if it's not isometric its best to forget about it. 2d animations that can be edited in PSP, PS and so on are fine.

Something like Arcanum or Fallout graphics are an example of what can be transfered, given time and energy.

If the model can be exported into a 3D program, new animations can be easily made--well, not easily, but it's doable. Either a ToEE modding group or an Arcanum modding group (can't recall which, I was looking at the bother at the same time) was talking about trying to get the plugin that allowed 3DSMax to read the game's creature animations. With that you could make any animations you want.

Without that, you have to manually make any animations that aren't included in the original files. Most games would have walking, physical combat, and dying/falling down. They might not have spellcasting or getting up animations though. Unless you're damn good at making those images yourself, you'd want a 3D program to make the animations from different angles.

I was under the impresion that they'd not packaged the meshes with TOEE but I see I stand corrected in that it actually packages them with it as .skm files.. The only concern here might be that this file might be copyrighted to Troika.

SKM is also an audio format for polyphonic tones that makes it harder to search for on google though. I've had no joy finding either a plugin or signs of one for TOEE.

Arcanum Ive never even looked at.
Now, I know that the NWN dudes figured something out but I wonder if a 3rd part plugin has been developed.

All they have there are these: -

I didn't say they had a good working plugin, I just said they were talking about getting it. ;) Actually, that thread you linked to is damn familiar....

Ick, sorry Stone, didn't want it to appear that I was misquoting you or anything.

The funny thing about the 3D arena is that people write all sorts of plugins and whatnot then hardly publicize them. I was hoping that someone had written one but alas, my search came to no avail.

You didn't misquote me, I was just trying to make sure that noone thought I was saying the tool was out. I'd probably get lynched!

Exactly - it has an isometric view, and the characters look quite 2.5D. :P
