I'm only starting one thread on this, in case i abandon it like the last idea of mine. So, like i mentioned in another thread about this, who would like to download a mod that adds familiars, ones that will be selected at random, but ones specific to alignment.
Also, ideas for familiars, banters, spells, etc. post them here.

Ideas mentioned already:
Hellhound
Serpent
Eagle
Damn, i forgot the rest.

I'm not requesting art for the inventory familiars yet, there's no work done on it yet.

If you try running a search with a long backdate on Familiars, you'll see encouragement for such a project in dozens of places. You'll also see a good half-dozen such projects started and abandoned. This mod idea doesn't need more public support, it needs someone to mod it and stick with the project. <_<

It seems like it will be pretty simple. Since monster summoning is random, this should be possible. if not, then i could just script it to make it seem random. I would search for things on here, but i still don't know where that search button is. I'm going to go look for it now.

I found it. That's amazing. Right in front of me the whole time. Looks like it could be useful

Ideas:

Find Familiar at level 5,6, or 7
Current Familiars are stronger
Don't lose constitution
Lose experience/level
Cast more spells
Jump in pack if hp reaches 10%
Find Greater Familiar at level 9 or 8
Conjures a legendary pokemon, i mean animal. Such as phoenix, hellhound, etc.
Different sets of familiars for each alignment
Maybe a quest in order to get familiar?
Elementals as familiars(air, fire, air, earth, and i don't know if color is changeable on elementals, but possibly an acid)
Definitely restricting familiars to mages and mage multiclasses(just gave me a new idea)
Different familiars for multiclasses
Obviously new banters.

Thanks to a forum at Ironworks for some of these ideas. Feel free to give ideas, that's why i made this thread.

Does anyone have the locations of all the Familiar Scrolls, or know how i can find all of them? I don't really feel like going through every box, body, etc. trying to find them. I don't want the scroll to randomly pop up in an enemies body either, after you kill them. How can i disable that from happening?

Better to remake old 1st level spell to have it's power increasing with mage's level.

Jump in pack if hp reaches 10%

Just make sure that they won't *jump* instantly across the half of a map - or they would be almost invincible :)

Maybe a quest in order to get familiar?

What about finding more or less usual familiars via spell, and "greater" ones via quest?

i don't know if color is changeable on elementals, but possibly an acid)

I remember meeting with green (acid, I think) version of elemental in some mod, as well as blue one (lightning elemental from TDD)

actually, if someone comes up with a good excuse for a class or a kit to be able to cast a familiar, i'll consider it. Such as a Wizard Slayer, i can just see them casting FF, can't you? :lol:

i can just see them casting FF, can't you? :lol:

A long time ago when I played my first mage in a PnP game I cast FF.. my familiar died the same day.. have never cast it since in PnP, or in a game. :)

i can't get NI to work. I got it extracted to my bg2 folder, but i can't find the jar file. i have vb6, and java installed. this happens to me every time, and i always somehow get it. i'm not sure how though, it just pops up. does anyone know what's wrong with it?

Who thinks that the current familiar finding spell should be changed rather than make a new one?

Um, Near Infinity IS a Jar file, but WinRAR will open it if you double-click on it. It's not meant to be extracted. I usually choose the file from the "start->run" menu in Windows, that seems to prevent WinRAR from interfering.

If you install Java Runtime Environment, it will reassign .jar files to be launched, not opened in winrar, by default.

i didn't think that it was supposed to be extracted, yet i do it every time. <_<
winrar is seriously more of a pain then a blessing sometimes.

The POS is not working. I changed the application that it opened with, and now it tries opening with that when i use start, run, near infinity. This happens even from the disk. Help me, please...

i did reinstall java already, i actually just added the second two options. i wonder if it would help if i reinstalled the whole thing?

Try right-clicking the JAR file in Windows Explorer, choose "open with", "browse" or "choose program" (depending on language), then find "javaw.exe". In my case, that file is in the "Program Files\Java 2 SDK v.141\Bin" folder.

oddly that was the first program i tried opening it with, but it didn't work. i tried it again and it's working now. YAY!!!

Or open WinRar and change the associated files. This kinda stuff is all documented on the NI site btw... <_<

i looked all over the site, but i didn't see anything that was helpful, maybe i just missed it somehow.

Is ranger/mage a possible kit?
Wolf, or some kind of canine for familiar if possible multiclass.

did anybody else know that there were other familiars already made? there was the wardog for one. FAMWAR.CRE. and others. this is going to be really interesting.

So far all i'm going to be able to do is change what creatures get called. I'm going to try to make a new spell too. I don't know much about this though.

I'm having trouble casting the spell now. when i cast the game freezes up. and ctrl+alt+delete. I went into the gam file and edited it to make the FAMWAR.CRE come out instead of whatever was in there before, Neutral Evil slot. Is there something missing from that file? I also gave the dog the cat's dialogue the second time around. I really don't feel like i should be working on this all by myself. if anyone wants to work, i really feel that this mod needs to be done, and i will be glad to accept your offer. PM's only, i seem to be prejudice against guests. :P

I think Familiars should stick to mages and sorcerors as the ranger already gets his animal companion.

What about wild familiars? Familiars that just *appear* in a battle or when the party is idle and then disappear again and perhaps reappear later?

Anyway I would also like to see more dialogue from Familiars, especially the Faerie/Pseudo Dragons - aren't these creatures capable of speech anyway?

....interesting idea, but i don't understand the point. Is it just because it's possible? "Hey, look what i can do. I can make a familiar appear for no reason at all." :lol: actually, after writing that, it sounds like a fun idea. Sitting there during some battle that doesn't involve your party, or your standing there during the demon summoning in the underdark and a familiar pops up. "Hey! I'm in the wrong place!" *poof*

I guess you're right about the ranger and him already getting a companion. But what about minsc? How about Boo can leave his inventory? And then if Boo dies, Minsc can have some sad dialogue about it and try to find a new pet. This could turn into more than a refinement mod.

It's not really the familiars themselves that i liked. It's the fact they can follow you from area to area.

If all summons could do that, it would be great (includes charmed units).
